"What are you looking at?"
"What about you?"
When such dialogue occurs in a drunken context, it is bound to lead to some tragic events.
On a late-night street, two groups of young people were drunk. Such situations were not uncommon, but no one expected that on this particular night, a simple phrase like "What are you looking at?" would spark a homicide.
At this point, you might wonder what the identity of the assailant was. It was then that Zhang provided the police with a crucial clue.
Zhang informed the police that among the three victims, one person had not participated in the fight at all; instead, he spent most of his time making phone calls. The police quickly located Qi, but due to his heavy drinking, he had little recollection of the events that night.
What surprised the police even more was that Qi was not familiar with the other two individuals; it was their first meeting, and he did not know their real names—only their nicknames. He had met them at a gathering prior to the incident when they were all drinking at a KTV, and after the party ended, the three walked home together.
Although Qi did not know who "Leopard" and "Punk" were, the police managed to gather some clues by questioning Xiao Qi.
The police soon found Ma, the organizer of the gathering that Xiao Qi attended that night. It was under Ma's invitation that Xiao Qi had joined the party. Ma had been dealt with by the Public Security Bureau multiple times before, so locating him was relatively easy for the police.
According to the information gathered by the police, Ma often associated with troubled youths and had always positioned himself as their leader. However, when faced with police questioning, Ma seemed to be well-prepared.
Ma claimed to only know one person named "Punk," stating he had no knowledge of anyone else and that the others were just random acquaintances from the street. It was clear that Ma was lying. Unable to extract any useful information from him, the police had no choice but to let him go. They then began investigating Ma's social connections.
During their investigation, the police quickly discovered that not only was Ma responsible for organizing that day's gathering, but also that those who attended were not merely casual acquaintances as Ma had claimed. Furthermore, investigators learned that someone at the gathering had seen a knife, which originally belonged to Ma.
Why did they bring a knife to the gathering? Was the entire incident involving Ma premeditated?
Upon further investigation, the police learned that Ma had summoned these individuals that night to teach a lesson to someone named "Gentleman." According to a friend of the victim, Xiao Hou, the name Xiao Hou actually contains the character "Jun," which means "gentleman." Did they plan to target Xiao Hou all along?
In a hotel in the city, law enforcement reviewed the surveillance footage from the night of the incident. They discovered that at 1:19 AM, shortly after the event, three young men entered the hotel.
Seven minutes later, these three individuals exited the hotel with another man and got into a black sedan parked in the courtyard. The three young men were Xiao Qi, Leopard, and Punk, and leaving the hotel with them was Ma.
After staying in the car for a few minutes, they drove away from the hotel. It seemed highly likely that what Xiao Qi, Leopard, and Punk did was premeditated by Ma.
About half an hour after Ma left the hotel with Xiao Qi, Leopard, and Punk, he returned alone with Punk; Xiao Qi and Leopard were nowhere to be seen.
With this lead, investigators continued questioning Xiao Qi, who revealed that after being taken away by Ma, he and Leopard went home separately and couldn’t recall much due to being drunk. Meanwhile, another team of investigators uncovered Leopard's true identity; his last name was Ma and he lived in downtown Guyuan.
Through Xiao Qi's identification, this young man with the last name Ma matched the description of Leopard. However, surveillance footage showed that neither Xiao Qi nor Leopard—who had been beaten while intoxicated—was responsible for delivering the fatal blow to Xiao Hou; it was Punk who did it.
Was Punk really acting on Ma's orders during the gathering to teach "Gentleman" Xiao Hou a lesson?
Subsequently, investigators continued to scrutinize the hotel surveillance and made another significant discovery. Just an hour after Ma brought Punk back to the hotel, he left again with a woman. The police speculated that after Ma departed, Punk likely hid in the room registered under Ma's name.
Indeed, at 10:30 AM, Punk emerged from Ma's room and subsequently checked out of the hotel. Who exactly was Punk? Where was he now? While sorting through Ma's connections, investigators noticed frequent calls between Ma and someone with the last name Yang after the incident. They immediately considered this person could be Punk.
Through their investigation, police found that when Punk fled the scene after committing his crime, he was on a phone call. At that moment, Ma happened to be on a call with this individual named Yang as well. Thus, law enforcement concluded that Yang was indeed Punk and had significant involvement in the crime. They promptly moved to apprehend Yang.
Faced with the police, Yang first broke down in tears. After a long period of comforting, Yang's emotions gradually calmed down. Meanwhile, through interrogation, the officers pieced together the entire story. That night, while drinking, Ma had given Leopard a knife and urged him to be ready to teach the "Gentleman" a lesson.
However, they did not expect that when the "Gentleman" arrived at the KTV, he adopted a conciliatory attitude to avoid trouble. As a result, they did not end up confronting him, and instead of fighting, both sides began to drink heavily together.
During this time, Punk noticed the knife in Ma's hand and asked to take it, slipping it into his own pocket.
Unfortunately, as the night came to an end and they were leaving, Xiao Qi, the drunken Leopard, and the relatively sober Punk ran into Xiao Zhang and Xiao Hou, who were also intoxicated. They exchanged glances, and soon their verbal confrontation escalated into a heated argument.
In the midst of the dispute, Xiao Zhang struck first, leading to a fierce brawl. At this point, Punk, who had been watching from the sidelines, joined the fight and ultimately stabbed the young man Xiao Hou with the knife.
With this, the case was successfully solved by the police.
