In Hunan Province, Yongzhou City, the police received a report of a missing person.
At the same time, they checked the information of the missing individual through the missing persons information system.
Soon, an important clue surfaced: a woman had gone missing from the Lover's Queen Hair Salon in Ningyuan County.
The missing woman was named Li Maomei, also known as Xiaomei. She was 20 years old, stood at 1.55 meters tall, and hailed from Guizhou. Her physical characteristics matched those of the deceased as analyzed by the police.
Consequently, the police began investigating Xiaomei's social connections. From her boyfriend, they learned that Xiaomei had received a phone call before she disappeared and had left home but never returned. The call had come from a colleague named Swallow.
The police then retrieved Xiaomei's call records, but her last call was from a landline, making it difficult for them to gather evidence.
Meanwhile, they located Xiaomei's mother and conducted a DNA comparison between her mother's blood and an unidentified lower limb. The DNA matched perfectly, confirming that the lower limb belonged to Xiaomei.
Following this, based on her boyfriend's information, the police launched an investigation into Xiaomei's colleague Swallow.
Swallow was identified as Zeng Zhen, a fellow villager from Jinping County, Guizhou. She admitted to having called Xiaomei and claimed she intended to repay her money. They had arranged to meet in front of Shengyuan Department Store, but Xiaomei never showed up.
At that moment, while sorting through Xiaomei's personal belongings, the police unexpectedly discovered that everything was present except for her bankbook and ID card. Upon tracing the bank records, they found that her bankbook had been reported lost the day before she disappeared.
"On February 4th, 3,890 yuan was withdrawn from her account, leaving only 7 yuan remaining. We concluded that someone must have taken this money," the police stated.
They suspected that this person was likely the suspect.
The police then reviewed the bank's surveillance footage; however, due to a power outage caused by a fallen utility pole nearby, the bank had resorted to using a generator for operations. Unfortunately, due to insufficient power supply, the surveillance equipment was not operational, leaving them without any images of the suspect.
This setback plunged the investigation back into a stalemate.
During a subsequent case analysis meeting, the police organized the existing clues in hopes of finding new breakthroughs.

During the subsequent investigation, the police learned that the deceased, Xiao Mei, had a fellow villager named Swallow who married a local youth named Liu Wenqing. Liu Wenqing's father was a butcher and had been familiar with the skills of slaughtering pigs since childhood.
The couple had a daughter after marriage and lived in dire straits. Additionally, Liu Wenqing had a gambling problem and often accumulated significant debts, which clearly provided them with a motive for killing Xiao Mei.
Moreover, on the day the police investigated the bank, they obtained an important piece of information: the phone number listed on Xiao Mei's bank card loss report was actually Swallow's mobile number.
Could it be that Swallow was the murderer of Xiao Mei? At this moment, all signs pointed to this couple.
One person alone could not accomplish such a task; to kill, dismember, and dispose of a body would certainly require the involvement of a man.
Through their inquiries, the police also discovered that the Swallow couple had rented a house in the Ximen Street area of the county, but no one knew their specific address.
Subsequently, officers took photos of the couple and went to investigate in the Ximen Street area. After diligent searching, they finally found the house where Swallow and her husband had rented.
Upon confirmation from the landlord, it was indeed the Swallow couple in the photos. However, the landlord stated that they had only rented for a month before moving out.
According to the date they moved out, it was three days after Xiao Mei's disappearance, which raised suspicions for the police. They immediately requested that the landlord open the door and conducted a thorough examination of the room.
Indeed, technicians found inconspicuous specks of blood on the walls and under the table in that room. They also discovered over ten drops of blood about the size of mung beans in a hidden corner of the room. Tests confirmed that all were human blood but could not rule out traces left by others.
The technicians then sent the collected samples to the provincial department for DNA comparison. The results showed that 16 points matched Xiao Mei's DNA. Based on this evidence, the police concluded that this rental house was indeed the crime scene for her murder and dismemberment.
With these leads in hand, the police felt it was time to confront the couple.
They proceeded to carry out an arrest operation against Swallow and her husband. However, when they arrived at Lover's Queen Hair Salon, they found it empty; both had already fled. But soon after, police apprehended Swallow at an internet café near the train station as she attempted to escape.
According to Swallow's confession, she and her husband indeed conspired to murder, dismember, and dispose of Xiao Mei's body.
Five days later, Suspect Liu Wenqing was apprehended in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, and both suspects identified the scene of the murder and body disposal.
Swallow stated that she and the deceased, Xiao Mei, were like sisters and shared everything, which made Xiao Mei trust her completely.
Before the New Year, Swallow accompanied Xiao Mei to the bank to transfer 10,000 yuan to her family. Xiao Mei had left her wallet in Swallow's bag at the Hair Salon where they stayed. Swallow was well aware of Xiao Mei's financial situation and, after discussing it with her husband, decided to take advantage of her friend.
Encouraged by her husband, Swallow secretly stole Xiao Mei's bankbook and ID card. She withdrew the remaining money from the bankbook and impersonated Xiao Mei to report the bankbook lost, accidentally leaving her own phone number on the loss report.
Fearing exposure and legal consequences, and further urged by her husband, Swallow lured Xiao Mei out again with the intention of selling her to traffickers. This would not only allow Xiao Mei to continue earning money for them but also provide a substantial one-time profit.
Ultimately, under the pretense of returning 100 yuan owed from playing mahjong, Swallow deceived Xiao Mei into their rented apartment. Her husband killed Xiao Mei, and after cleaning up the apartment, they moved out together. It was only later that Swallow realized this was all a trap set by her husband.
Initially, she never intended to kill Xiao Mei; however, Liu Wenqing's account contradicted hers entirely.
According to Liu Wenqing's confession, it was Swallow who strangled Xiao Mei to death while he merely assisted in dismembering and disposing of the body.
At this point, both were still shifting blame onto each other.
Their actions echoed an old saying: "Couples are like birds in the same forest; when disaster strikes, they fly their separate ways."
