Time: August 8, 2012
Location: Henan Province, Zhengzhou.
On this day, the police received a report that workers at the canal had discovered a yellow plastic bag containing a human head in the waterway.
Upon receiving the report, the police quickly arrived at the scene. The reporter claimed to be an administrator of the canal, whose daily job involved cleaning up floating debris in the water.
As usual, while cleaning the river with colleagues, they suddenly noticed something vaguely visible in the water and decided to fish it out.
However, as soon as they pulled the yellow bag from the water, a stench so foul it could pierce through one’s skull wafted out. Struggling against the smell, they tossed the bag onto the shore.
Driven by curiosity, they wanted to see what was inside. But when they opened a small part of the bag, they were horrified. Technical personnel then fully opened the bag.
Inside was a white floral dress, and upon further inspection, there was a female head within it.
It was terrifying. The victim's eyelids were turned inside out; as I said, a giant's view had formed—one could hardly distinguish her eyes, nose, or mouth as they were likely severely swollen. The hair had become loose from being submerged for so long in water, and there were clear signs of strangulation around her neck.
The level of corruption was truly appalling. After discovering the head, the next step was to locate the rest of the body. The police conducted a thorough search of the river where the head was found, but ultimately uncovered no further clues.
In light of this, the police speculated that this was merely the site where the body was disposed of. The killer likely chose this location to distance themselves from the corpse, hoping it would not be discovered and that everyone would believe they had no connection to the victim's death. Ironically, this also revealed some sort of relationship between the killer and the deceased.
The most pressing task now was to find the remaining parts of the body and uncover the identity of the victim in order to solve this murder and dismemberment case.
Consequently, the police began investigating recent missing persons within Zhengzhou. However, after searching and comparing records, they found no matches among the missing persons list.
At this point, the police concluded that the victim might be a migrant worker; otherwise, a living person would not have gone missing for so long without any family members filing a report. This realization left their investigation at an impasse.
Just then, after conducting an autopsy and scanning the head, forensic experts discovered that its owner was a young woman.
Preliminary estimates placed her age between 20 and 30 years old; she was quite attractive and had a fashionable appearance. There was a scar on her chin that likely resulted from a previous surgery.
One of her teeth was missing.
The autopsy also revealed that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation, with an estimated time of death around five days prior. Approximately 24 hours after death, her head had been severed and submerged in a canal.
As time passed, decomposition set in, producing gases.
This caused the plastic bag containing her head to become tightly sealed, preventing gas from escaping. Eventually, this led to her head slowly rising from the depths of the water.
The head that surfaced seemed to convey its own sense of injustice and resentment.
During a subsequent case analysis meeting, the police meticulously reviewed all aspects of the investigation.
Based on the only clue left at the scene—a handbag and a floral skirt along with characteristics of the victim's head—the police decided to split into two teams: one would investigate the handbag while the other focused on identifying features related to the head.
However, due to the overwhelming number of merchants using this type of tote bag in the market, it was impossible to pinpoint who had used it. Another team also visited relevant hospitals but found no useful leads.
By this time, three days had passed since the incident, and the continuous interruption of clues left the case seemingly without direction, putting the investigation in a stalemate.
After analyzing the case, the police decided to post a Reward Notice throughout the city to seek more valuable information.
Following the announcement, calls from the public began pouring in, but after each was investigated by the Investigator, they all left the police feeling disappointed.
Just as the police were about to lose hope, another call came into the special investigation team. The caller claimed that the description of the woman in the Reward Notice closely matched that of his ex-girlfriend.
The special investigation team quickly organized officers and located the man. He stated that his ex-girlfriend's name was Ji Xiaofeng and that she was from Zhumadian, Henan, working at a Foot Massage Parlor.
Since his girlfriend worked in massage services and continued in that profession after they started dating, he had tried unsuccessfully to persuade her to quit before they eventually broke up.
Unable to let go of their relationship, he had been in contact with her recently but suddenly lost touch a while ago.
Subsequently, the police began investigating Ji Xiaofeng's social connections. Soon, a man who was closely associated with her came into focus; he was Ji Xiaofeng's current boyfriend.
According to the Massage Parlor Owner, since Ji Xiaofeng went missing, this man had not been seen again.
At this moment, suspicion surrounding him increased sharply. To clarify the situation quickly, the police decided to check Ji Xiaofeng's residence.
When the Reporter and Investigator arrived downstairs, the Reporter immediately recognized that the man walking out of the hallway was indeed Ji Xiaofeng's current boyfriend.
This raised questions for the investigators: if they lived together, why hadn’t he reported her missing? Did he not know that Ji Xiaofeng was dead? Or could it be that the deceased was not Ji Xiaofeng at all?
To further confirm their suspicions without alarming him, the Investigators decided to split into two groups: one would follow his current boyfriend while another would go upstairs to investigate and find the landlord to open the door.
Subsequently, the accompanying technicians discovered splattered blood in the bathroom and found dark red stains on the handle of a kitchen knife that had not been cleaned properly.
At this point, the police decided to continue tracking the man. Meanwhile, the technicians took the blood samples extracted from the room back to the station for comparison, and the results confirmed that the blood belonged to the deceased, Ji Xiaofeng.
The bathroom was identified as the Crime Scene, and they notified the officers responsible for tracking to immediately apprehend the man.
The suspect, Qi Longdong, 26 years old, a native of Jiangsu Yancheng. The police then conducted an interrogation of Qi Longdong, who confessed to personally killing his girlfriend, Ji Xiaofeng.
According to Qi Longdong's account, two years ago he and several fellow villagers went to Zhengzhou to work and earned quite a bit. During their leisure time, they would visit massage parlors where he met the young and beautiful Ji Xiaofeng.
They hit it off immediately and began frequent communication. Soon after, they started living together, and he realized he could not live without her. He poured his savings into their relationship and even advised Ji Xiaofeng to quit her old profession, claiming he could support her.
Initially, Ji Xiaofeng was very touched by this gesture. However, it wasn't long before he discovered that she frequently went missing. He even found her at the place where they first met.
This led to multiple arguments between them, and their relationship gradually deteriorated.
In an attempt to salvage their relationship, he proposed marriage to Ji Xiaofeng, but she always brushed him off with various excuses.
On the night of August 3rd, after returning home from work and finding Ji Xiaofeng absent again, he angrily went to her workplace. As he suspected, he was right and stormed in furiously.
He pulled Ji Xiaofeng out and they had a heated argument all the way back to his apartment. Instead of calming down upon returning home, their argument intensified. Exhausted from fighting, he tried to embrace Ji Xiaofeng in an attempt to soothe her feelings.
However, Ji Xiaofeng pushed him away and grabbed a broomstick, striking him fiercely while declaring she wanted to break up with him.
In a fit of rage, he seized the broom from her hands, pinned her down on the bed, and choked her. In a moment of lost control, he strangled Ji Xiaofeng to death.
The entire process lasted about two minutes. According to Qi Longdong's confession, he used all his strength during that time. When Ji Xiaofeng stopped struggling, he finally released his grip and looked at his beloved woman lying there quietly—she could no longer betray or leave him.
He felt a sense of relief at that moment. After dragging Ji Xiaofeng to the bathroom, he was so exhausted that he lay down on the bed and fell asleep.
Although Ji Xiaofeng was lying in the bathroom, he didn’t feel anything unusual; in fact, he slept soundly through the night. When he woke up the next day, however, he discovered that Ji Xiaofeng's body had begun to change.
He noticed that there were patches of purple and red on Ji Xiaofeng's corpse, which is what we refer to as postmortem hypostasis. Seeing this made him a bit anxious; he thought it wouldn’t do to leave the body there like that.
So he went out and bought a suitcase. While trying to fit Ji Xiaofeng into it, he realized the suitcase was too small. He struggled for quite some time but still couldn’t manage to get Ji Xiaofeng inside. At that moment, another idea struck him.
Dismemberment—he would cut the torso into pieces.
He first used a kitchen knife but soon found that after placing the torso inside, there was no way to fit the head in as well. So, he casually grabbed a woman's torn skirt from the rented room and wrapped the head in it, then placed it in a plastic bag, preparing to dispose of it together.
A few hours later, feeling particularly tired, he lay down on the bed and fell asleep again. It wasn’t until around 10 PM that he dragged the suitcase filled with body parts out the door.
Riding his bike westward with the suitcase, he discarded it in a cornfield. Fearing someone might recognize the head if he threw it away nearby, he later tossed it off a bridge not far from Xihuan before riding his electric scooter back.
Following Qi Longdong's guidance, the police found Ji Xiaofeng's torso in the cornfield. When the technicians opened the suitcase, they were met with a gruesome sight; it was filled with flesh and highly decomposed limbs, making for an extremely disturbing scene.
Subsequently, the police went to Ji Xiaofeng's hometown to collect samples from his relatives. After comparing them upon their return, they confirmed that both the head and torso found at the scene belonged to Ji Xiaofeng.
It was only at this point that Qi Longdong learned why his beloved Ji Xiaofeng had been unwilling to marry him.
