As the urgent knocking echoed, we all turned our gazes toward the door simultaneously.
We exchanged glances, uncertainty filling the air.
Jianjian seemed a bit frightened of Lin Ke'er, hesitating to approach. The knocking was loud and frantic. Suddenly, Zhang, who was lying on the hospital bed, let out a loud shout, asking who was outside.
Strangely, after Zhang's shout, the knocking ceased abruptly, leaving an eerie silence in its wake.
"Did they leave?" Zhang asked.
But no one could answer him. The room fell silent, yet in that strange quietness, no one felt at ease.
"I'll go check," I said as I stepped forward.
Lin Ke'er grabbed my hand and said, "I'll go with you."
I glanced back at Lin Ke'er; there was a hint of worry on her face. Yet even with that concern, it did not detract from her beauty.
I found myself increasingly captivated by Lin Ke'er’s looks. Perhaps it was true what they said—beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
The room where Zhang was staying was a typical single patient room, featuring a bed and a sofa beside it.
As Lin Ke'er and I approached, I pressed myself against the door and called out softly, "Is anyone there?"
But there was no response from outside. My hand reached for the doorknob, ready to turn it when suddenly, the knocking resumed once more.
The sudden knock on the door was particularly startling, especially since my ear was pressed against it. The sound reverberated through my eardrum, and in an instant, my heart leaped into my throat.
Noodles whimpered behind me, letting out a couple of soft cries.
"Who is it?" I shouted again.
The knocking continued, though it was no longer as urgent as before. After asking three times, a voice came from outside: "It's me."
At first, I didn't register who it was. However, the voice sounded somewhat familiar. After thinking for a moment, I realized who it was—wasn't that Wang Wei's voice?
"Wang Wei?" I asked, my tone filled with doubt.
"It's me."
Once I confirmed it was Wang Wei, I still didn't open the door. I had no good feelings toward him; he wasn't exactly a decent person. "What do you want?" I asked.
Wang Wei replied from outside, "Open the door and let me in."
I retorted, "Aren't you a ghost? Can't you just walk through the wall?" In truth, I had no intention of opening the door at all. After I spoke, there was silence from Wang Wei.
I thought he might have actually walked through the wall, but strangely enough, there were no additional people in the room. To be sure, I even asked Jianjian about it.
Jianjian said she hadn't seen anything.
I wondered if he had left and called out for Wang Wei. But in the next second, Wang Wei's voice suddenly turned frantic as he shouted, "Saning, hurry up and open the door!"
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"If you don't open the door, I'm going to die."
I couldn't tell if Wang Wei was serious or joking. I turned to look at Lin Ke'er, who nodded at me.
I finally asked, "What happened outside?"
I heard Wang Wei say, "He's here... hurry and open the door!" From his voice, it was clear that Wang Wei was already very anxious.
He's here. I had just heard someone say, "You’re here." Could there be a connection?
"Saning, open the door!"
I was pulled back from my thoughts and opened the door. Wang Wei stumbled in from outside, shouting for me to close the door quickly.
As soon as Wang Wei entered, a tense atmosphere filled the room.
Wang Wei glanced at the others in the room, and when he saw Lin Ke'er, a flicker of fear crossed his eyes but quickly vanished.
After I closed the door, my dog started barking furiously at Wang Wei, nearly lunging to bite him.
I looked at Wang Wei and said, "Aren't you supposed to be dead? How can you still be alive?" I had always been curious about who had imprisoned Wang Wei in this hospital.
Wang Wei's face was filled with panic, his complexion pale, utterly pale.
Lin Ke'er grabbed my hand without saying a word, instead focusing on bending my fingers one by one, as if counting them.
When Zhang Pangzi saw Wang Wei, his expression changed momentarily before returning to normal. I believe that from this point on, Zhang Pangzi would come to believe that ghosts truly exist in this world.
Only Jianjian seemed to be acting strangely; she appeared to be very frightened. I was genuinely curious about Jianjian—how could someone born with the ability to see ghosts still be so afraid of them? One would think she would be desensitized to such things by now! But Jianjian was not; she was genuinely terrified of ghosts.
Wang Wei's pupils were bursting with blood vessels, and his eyes were completely white, the irises invisible. I suddenly wondered if this was what a ghost's eyes looked like.
I took a special glance at Ke'er. It seemed she knew what I was thinking; a smile tugged at her lips, and her clear eyes blinked a few times, as if to say, "Your wife is naturally beautiful, absolutely a genuine beauty."
I shifted my gaze back to Wang Wei.
At that moment, Wang Wei's emotions had calmed down considerably. He said, "Although I am a ghost, I haven't completely died yet." This statement was quite contradictory.
What did he mean by saying he was a ghost but hadn't completely died? It was a self-contradictory statement that he actually uttered.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Lin Ke'er paused for a moment in her counting of my fingers but quickly resumed. I had lost track of how many times she had counted already.
Wang Wei's gaze seemed distant, as if he were reminiscing about past events. "Saning, my physical body and my soul are not together. My physical body is outside the hospital, but there is still a trace of Remnant Soul within it that hasn't completely died. So as long as my soul can escape this ghostly place, I can still live."
As I listened to Wang Wei speak, I suddenly recalled how Soybean had been pinned by a nail from the Crown of the Soul, ultimately suppressing a trace of Remnant Soul and turning Soybean into a Wandering Spirit.
Was Wang Wei really like this?
Lin Ke'er held my hand, as if she knew what I was thinking. She said, "Ningzi, he's not like Soybean."
I glanced at Lin Ke'er in surprise, wondering how she could know what was on my mind.
Lin Ke'er gave me a playful smile.
In an instant, I felt defeated.
Wang Wei's emotions suddenly intensified as he stepped closer to me. He said, "Saning, I really want to live. I want to live; I can't go on like this."
Mian Tiao barked as Wang Wei approached me, and this time it didn't hold back, biting Wang Wei directly. Surprisingly, Wang Wei didn't flinch.
He looked at me sincerely, but I found his gaze unnervingly terrifying. I took a deep breath; outside in the corridor, silence had returned.
"Save me, Saning," Wang Wei said to me.
"Don't save him; this guy has harmed us before," Zhang Pangzi interjected.
Wang Wei became anxious upon hearing Zhang Pangzi's words, fearing that I wouldn't help him. He had indeed harmed us before, and it was clear that Zhang Pangzi's situation was caused by him.
Wang Wei hurriedly explained, "Aren't you all fine now? I just wanted to scare you a little and then have Saning take me out."
Zhang Pangzi snorted in response.
I turned to Wang Wei and said, "Didn't you say we can't get out?"
Wang Wei fell silent for a moment before replying, "He's here. If we don't go out, we'll all die."
"Who is he?" I immediately asked.
Lin Ke'er continued counting my fingers. Wang Wei didn't answer right away, so I pressed on, "Who exactly trapped you here?"
I could almost see the change in Wang Wei's expression with my own eyes. His face shifted from intense to calm, then to confusion, followed by fear, and finally to panic.
He murmured, "Who is he? Who is he? I can't say." In the next moment, his voice suddenly rose, filled with desperation as he exclaimed, "I can't say, I can't say."
"Who exactly is he?"
Jianjian looked at me, and Zhang Pangzi was also watching me.
Lin Ke'er stopped counting my fingers, and everything seemed to freeze at that moment. I was waiting for Wang Wei to tell me who he was.
He has come. Who exactly has come?
And in my previous confusion, I had heard the phrase "You have come" several times. Perhaps it wasn't just a hallucination; it was real.
Wang Wei's lips trembled with anxiety as he said, "He is..."
