Suddenly, the originally brilliant golden light vanished in an instant, as if it had been drawn back into a coffin. I rubbed my eyes, thinking I must have seen it wrong.
But when I lowered my hand, the golden light was already gone. I believed that this light was the Buddha's radiance.
So the Sarira must be hidden within the coffin.
However, the disappearance of the golden light was too swift, which made me feel a bit suspicious.
Wang Wei seemed to notice my strange expression and asked, "Saning, what's wrong?" I felt somewhat dazed and murmured, "The Buddha's light has disappeared."
The coffin appeared to take on a different form in my eyes.
Chen San, seeing that I was not moving, said to me, "What are you hesitating for?" Chen San's pale face seemed to reveal a hint of madness; I almost suspected that this person had a violent temper but was constantly suppressing it.
I looked at Chen San and instinctively replied, "The time is not right yet."
Both Chen San and Wang Wei glanced at me simultaneously. I quietly stared at the coffin, waiting to see if the golden Buddha's light would reappear.
Surprisingly, Chen San did not urge me this time; we waited like that for a moment.
The beam of our flashlight illuminated the surroundings, and everything around us fell into our sight. The wooden structure of the space meant that wooden beams still crossed above our heads. After the golden light disappeared, aside from the flashlight's glow, everything else was pitch black.
At that moment, I took a step toward the coffin. Wang Wei spoke up, saying that the Sarira could be obtained by those with fate. Whether I was one of those destined or not, I did not know.
However, at this moment, my desire to understand Sarira's thoughts was incredibly strong.
I took a step forward, and the beam of Chen San's flashlight illuminated me; he was watching my every move.
The original statue of Buddha, under the shadow of the light, seemed to take on a more ferocious expression, losing some of its compassion. I was only about a hundred meters away from the coffin.
It took me several minutes to finally reach the front of the coffin. By the time I stood before it, my heart was in my throat, and my breathing had become heavy. I turned my head and asked, "Aren't you coming over?"
Wang Wei exchanged a glance with me. Since he had died in this place, it was normal for him to feel some fear. However, upon hearing my question, he still approached.
Chen San followed suit, and the three of us stood on the same side.
I took a deep breath. To be honest, I was exceptionally nervous at that moment. Not only was I about to open this eerie coffin, but even if it were an ordinary coffin without a corpse inside, I would still feel a chill in my heart.
But once the arrow is nocked, it must be shot.
I gripped the edge of the coffin. Generally speaking, coffins are nailed shut after being buried, but this one wasn’t. When I pushed with my hand, the lid moved.
To be honest, I felt particularly uncertain at that moment.
However, after pushing a second time, I saw a light emanating from the coffin again; my expression froze for a moment before I felt a sense of relief.
Wang Wei and Chen San didn’t notice anything unusual; they probably couldn’t see the light.
At that moment, I didn't say anything, fearing that something might go wrong. If Chen San got angry and caused trouble, I couldn't imagine what the consequences would be.
I pushed the coffin lid with a bit more force, my heart racing as I wanted to see the legendary Sarira. Just as I was about to open the coffin, someone tapped me on the shoulder.
In an instant, I felt my heart nearly leap out of my chest. I turned around quickly, breathing heavily, and looked at Wang Wei and Chen San, asking, "Who just tapped my shoulder?"
They both shook their heads simultaneously, indicating it wasn't them. We exchanged glances, feeling a bit uneasy.
Wang Wei said, "Saning, could it be that Vengeful Spirit?" The Vengeful Spirit he mentioned was likely the one that had scared him to death twenty years ago. I didn't think it was that; if it were a Vengeful Spirit, I should be able to see it, but right now, there was nothing in sight.
The coffin lid was already pushed halfway open, and the light from within seemed to grow even brighter.
I felt I couldn't delay any longer; the longer I waited, the more things could go wrong. So I steeled myself and with one strong push, I flipped the coffin lid open.
With a loud crash, the lid fell to the ground, and the light burst forth like an explosion. I was momentarily stunned, but just then, a cold wind swept through.
Chen San's expression changed suddenly as he pulled me back. I instinctively grabbed Wang Wei.
Our steps became unsteady as we nearly stumbled.
I heard Chen San say, "Sarira isn't inside."
Wang Wei turned to me and asked, "Saning, what do you think?"
I certainly felt that Sarira was inside; I had never seen such a strong Buddhist light before. If it wasn't Sarira, then what could it be?
Chen San said, "It's changed."
Wang Wei asked, "What has changed?"
A hint of confusion appeared on Chen San's fair face, but there was no sign of panic. I was about to say that I saw the Buddhist light, and it must be where Sarira was located.
However, when I looked again, the color of the light had changed to black. And it took on a human shape.
Is it Wandering Soul? I wondered.
Wang Wei's complexion was as pale as if he had seen a ghost. I heard him say, "Saning, it's a Vengeful Spirit!"
Chen San decisively said, "Fall back."
As soon as he finished speaking, the three of us headed towards the tomb passage, but just then, the heavens seemed to conspire against us—the stone door had closed.
Wang Wei cursed under his breath.
We were all blocked in front of the stone door. Chen San said, "I'll open the door first; you two hold them off for a bit."
Wang Wei immediately retorted, "Why should you be the one to open the door?"
I told Wang Wei to open the door, as he was already familiar with the place after coming in before. It shouldn't take too long this time. Wang Wei fell silent.
I looked at the Vengeful Spirit floating before me; I had never experienced anything like this!
Chen San seemed to understand our capabilities and said, "Use your blood to draw it away." I thought to myself that these ghosts really were like what you see on TV—they craved human blood.
I glanced at Wang Wei and said, "Let's do it."
Wang Wei's face darkened immediately, but he soon realized that his body didn't seem to belong to him. He prepared to act, but Chen San interjected, "His won't work; it has to be yours."
At that moment, the Vengeful Spirit emerged from the coffin, seemingly unaware of what was happening.
With things having progressed this far, some sacrifice was inevitable, so I steeled myself to draw blood.
Just as my fingertip broke open, Chen San's voice suddenly turned eerily calm. I heard him say, "We can't get out; it's changed. The switch has changed."
Those words landed like a death sentence.
Wang Wei then said to me, "Saning, don't be afraid. You're not the old Saning anymore."
My five fingers had already formed a fist, and then I relaxed them. Wang Wei had said this to me several times: I wasn't the old Saning anymore.
Indeed, I could see ghosts now—more than ever before—but could I catch them? Could I even kill them?
Chen San remained eerily calm as he crouched down and pulled out a piece of Yellow Cloth. However, there was nothing on the Yellow Cloth; he quickly drew something on it with blood, and it was his own blood.
Once he finished drawing, Chen San unfolded the Yellow Cloth, completing all these actions within a matter of seconds.
The Vengeful Spirit soon wrapped itself around me.
The golden light from before had vanished without a trace, and I quickly fell victim to it, likely because my finger had bled. That was why the Vengeful Spirit latched onto me.
I carried the Wooden Box on my back, remembering what Ke'er had said about opening it when faced with insurmountable danger. Ke'er had looked rather pale when she mentioned this.
Thus, I believed that the Wooden Box must never be opened, as its secrets likely pertained to Ke'er.
The Vengeful Spirit tightened its grip around my neck, and the sensation of suffocation hit me like a tidal wave. My body was uncontrollably lifted into the air.
In my daze, I seemed to see the Grim Reaper approaching me.
I struggled against it.
Wang Wei shouted from below, "Saning, your eyes..."
At that moment, I could hardly hear what Wang Wei was saying. It felt just like that night when I saw him; his lips moved as he spoke many words, but I couldn't make out a single one.
