Wang Wei took a deep breath and said, "You have received these eyes, so you have received me."
I thought to myself, maybe I should just pass on this.
Wang Wei immediately felt a wave of frustration; this wasn't about whether I wanted it or not, it was about him being determined to stick with me. With that, Wang Wei winked at me, and I almost gagged.
Wang Wei continued, "Saning, I've already told you a lot today."
I nodded. Of course, I understood the deeper meaning behind Wang Wei's words. He meant that anyone who possessed these eyes was no ordinary person; having these eyes meant gaining everything that came with them.
Just like Wang Wei.
I said to Wang Wei, "I understand now. You can go back."
Wang Wei acknowledged with a sound, saying he would come back the day after tomorrow. I nodded again because the Second Funeral was set to begin that night.
However, by the third evening, Ke'er still had not shown up.
Chen San remained silent regarding the Evil Being's funeral. We had all experienced it three days prior. Wang Wei arrived early, having prepared some items.
There were things like black dog blood and rooster blood—items used for warding off evil spirits; ordinary ghosts would not dare to approach such things.
Wang Wei said, "Saning, I'm almost ready."
I glanced at the Wooden Box and the White Lantern and replied that I was also nearly prepared but was waiting for two people: one was Ke'er and the other was Chen San.
As night fell, I still hadn't seen Chen San or Ke'er, but I did receive a text from the Evil Being. It informed me of the funeral's location, which was downstream of the Moat.
I knew where downstream of the Moat was. It was an industrial area with heavy pollution; during both day and night, that ghostly place seemed deserted.
Only three time slots saw any activity: in the morning when people went to work, in the afternoon when they got off work, and in the evening when they finished for the day. No one was allowed out during lunchtime.
I know so much about this because my classmate used to work there and often complained that it was like being in prison, though at least the pay was high.
That’s why many people still choose to work there.
Are we really going to that place for a “Water Burial”? I don’t know how many people this guy invited this time, but since Chen San and Ke'er are aware, there must be others who know as well.
Attending a funeral is a common thing, but to say I’m going to attend my own funeral while I’m still alive is quite eerie.
Fortunately, I have some preparation this time; otherwise, if I went in blindly like last time, something bad would definitely happen.
Wang Wei and I sat in the room in silence, just watching the time. The Evil Being, however, seemed impatient and texted me that if I didn’t arrive before midnight, someone would die.
I replied that I would definitely make it before midnight and told him not to mess around.
Soon after, I received a reply: “Clean yourself up before the final bath; it’s better to be tidy after death.”
I cursed that bastard under my breath and shoved my phone into my pocket. By ten o'clock, neither Ke'er nor Chen San had shown up. I asked Wang Wei how long it would take to drive downstream from here.
Wang Wei replied, “About an hour?” He wasn’t sure either.
Finally, I said if they weren’t here by ten-thirty, we should head out. Wang Wei reminded me that my wife wanted me to wait for them.
I could wait, but some people couldn’t afford to.
The Evil Being seemed worried I wouldn’t show up and sent me another photo. After seeing it, I regretted it immediately because Jianjian was in the picture.
Jianjian had also fallen into his hands.
I couldn’t help but gasp in shock and quickly asked Wang Wei where Wind Tree was. For safety's sake, Wang Wei made a call home.
Once the call connected, it wasn’t long before I heard Wind Tree’s voice, which finally eased my mind.
I never expected Jianjian to fall into his hands as well.
Half an hour passed quickly. I got up and called Wang Wei, and we headed that way. Just as we reached the stairs, I spotted a familiar face.
It was Chen San. His appearance was timely, but there was a fresh cut on his face, adding a touch of allure to his already pale complexion.
"I'm here," Chen San said to me.
I had many questions for him, but when he stood in front of me, I found myself unable to ask anything.
"Let's get in the car," I suggested to Chen San.
But before I could ask him anything, he replied, "Wait a bit longer; someone else is coming. If she doesn't arrive, you might die."
At Chen San's words, I couldn't help but gasp in surprise.
Suddenly, I recalled what he had said before: "I'll exchange my life for yours." At that moment, I didn't truly believe it.
"Why are you helping me?"
Chen San let out a cold laugh. "Helping you is the same as helping myself. The person organizing your funeral this time is quite sinister."
Wang Wei couldn't interject; he merely glared at Chen San with hostility. As eleven o'clock approached, the person Chen San mentioned still hadn't shown up.
I couldn't wait any longer, so we set off.
Chen San sighed deeply and murmured something that sounded somewhat melancholic: "She really won't help me after all!"
Nevertheless, he still got into the car with me.
The three of us headed toward the industrial area downstream of the Moat. Ke'er’s absence left me feeling uneasy. I glanced at my phone, hoping Ke'er would call me.
I thought to myself that once Ke'er appeared, I would definitely not let her leave. I was desperate for the Revival Pearl.
Taking a deep breath, I said to Chen San, "After this is over, you can ask me for anything, but please help me bring Ke'er back to life, okay?"
Chen San and I were sitting in the back seat while Wang Wei drove.
Chen San agreed, though his mood seemed rather low at the moment.
He said, "Bringing her back to life can't be done with just the Relic, and your wife's soul is quite peculiar." He used the word "peculiar."
I also felt that Ke'er's soul was strange. Ever since I got these eyes, I could see through all souls, but Ke'er's soul eluded me. That faceless spirit was also very odd.
The car continued to drive on.
I didn't know what state Chen San was in at that moment, but if he wasn't a dead person, how long had he been alive?
With time running short, Wang Wei drove quickly.
I had the White Lantern with me in the car.
It seemed that Chen San only then noticed the White Lantern. He asked, "How long have you had this thing?"
I replied that it had only been a few days.
Chen San responded with an "oh," and around eleven fifty, we arrived at the location designated by the Evil Being. At this point, Ke'er still hadn't appeared, nor was there any sign of her.
We got out of the car, but as soon as I stepped out, I was stunned by the sight before me.
Before us lay an open area filled with countless Light Spots, as if we had entered a world of souls.
It was all Wandering Spirits.
It looked like an abandoned factory. Damn, they really knew how to pick locations—first an abandoned building and now an abandoned factory.
I initially thought it was a "Water Burial" until I saw so many Lonely Souls, the wild spirits, and then I realized that what was coming next might be a grand "Soul Burial."
In this vast open space, looking up, the sky was filled with countless Light Spots, resembling swarms of fireflies dancing above me. As I gazed at the not-so-high azure sky, a sense of haze enveloped me.
On this patch of ground, twelve lamps were lit. These lamps were not particularly bright, yet they brought order to all the Lonely Souls around.
I couldn't understand what these lamps represented; all I knew was that the world in my eyes was vibrant and colorful at that moment.
I took a deep breath when Wang Wei timely said to me, "Saning, those twelve lamps are everlasting lights. Legend has it that everlasting lights never extinguish."
I glanced at Wang Wei in surprise, thinking to myself that if something were truly everlasting, how could there be so many?
Wang Wei quickly clarified, "There is only one everlasting light; the rest are fake. However, they have a similar effect."
At that moment, Wang Wei attached himself to his own body. He couldn't see the world through my eyes. I nodded and then asked, "What is the purpose of the everlasting light?"
Wang Wei replied, "The everlasting light is like a seductive and enchanting woman. It draws countless men like moths to a flame, fearless even in death."
Chen San listened to Wang Wei's words, somewhat entranced, murmuring softly in a voice no one could hear: fearless even in death.
Just then, a voice rang out.
