I was stunned, kissed by an Ugly Monster.
But the kiss wasn't the main point; the real issue was that she had touched my soul. It felt as if she was draining my essence, and I had a strong sensation that my soul was surging outward like a tide.
Damn it, could this Ugly Monster really absorb souls? Was she the Evil Being?
She seemed completely absorbed in kissing me. As I opened my eyes to look at her, I felt my soul starting to leave my body. Was this her method of stripping away the Soul?
I wanted to tilt my head back, but she forcefully held it in place.
Before long, however, she seemed to get angry and said she wouldn't kiss me anymore, claiming that after all that time, nothing had happened. Then her tone changed: “Saning Brother, do you not love me anymore?”
Her hands released me, and as I gasped for breath, the moment her lips left mine, my soul sprang back like a coiled spring.
She gazed at me with longing eyes. I couldn't help but feel nauseous. At that moment, I kicked her hard in the abdomen, sending her tumbling off the machine.
I wiped my mouth vigorously and spat out some saliva while cursing, “Damn it, you Ugly Monster, how dare you kiss me!”
Wang Wei had also climbed up by now and witnessed the scene. He asked if I was okay. I replied that I was fine but that the girl had been quite unsettling.
Not long after I spoke, a sound suddenly emerged from beneath the iron lump—a child's whimpering.
“Saning Brother, how could you insult the Ugly Monster?”
Wang Wei decided to stoke the fire: “Saning is just speaking the truth; you are indeed an Ugly Monster.” But as soon as Wang Wei finished speaking, there was suddenly silence below.
I ignored it and reached out, touching Zhang Fatty's soul. I managed to bring Zhang Fatty's soul down.
This soul had no consciousness, existing in a hazy state. However, just as I brought Zhang Fatty's soul down, the White Lantern in my hand absorbed it.
I was stunned.
I wanted to stop it, but it was already too late; Zhang Fatty's soul was swallowed by the White Lantern.
Damn, this White Lantern can consume souls. I thought about how to get Zhang Fatty out, but Wang Wei said, "Saning, the White Lantern only devours evil souls. It must have consumed this soul for that reason."
After Wang Wei spoke, I felt a wave of confusion. Could it be that Zhang Fatty had become an evil soul?
Wang Wei told me that perhaps this wasn't even Zhang Fatty's soul at all. Had I been deceived from the start? Was the Remnant Soul I saw at Zhang Dexin's house also a fake?
I was filled with doubts.
Chen San still hadn't shown up.
Wang Wei and I sat on the iron lump, not planning to leave just yet. I thought that since Jianjian and Zhang Fatty were both fakes, we might as well leave now.
But Chen San was nowhere to be found. I took out my phone and called Chen San. No one answered. Wang Wei said, "Don't wait for Chen San anymore; let's leave this place of chaos."
I took a deep breath and glanced at Wang Wei.
What Wang Wei said was somewhat selfish, but it was understandable; I wasn't comfortable staying in this ghostly place either.
However, Chen San had promised to help me save Ke'er.
I am currently too obsessed with the Revival Pearl; as long as there is a chance, I definitely won't be willing to give it up.
I stood at a high vantage point, surveying the warehouse environment. From here, I could see the entrance; in fact, it would only take a few steps for us to get out.
Wang Wei was trying to persuade me.
In the end, I said I would deal with the iron object first. My mind was restless, but Wang Wei guided me toward the exit.
I started walking toward the exit, but after just a couple of steps, I turned my head to take a look. I saw someone—it seemed to be Zhang Fatty.
And it was a person, not a spirit.
I could see clearly. I paused in my tracks, instantly recognizing that figure, but it flashed past me in an instant.
I called out to Wang Wei and urged him to go ahead.
Wang Wei looked at me and said, "Saning, aren't you coming out?"
I reassured him, "Don't worry; I won't go into that coffin. You go ahead!" I meant it sincerely because Wang Wei had been trapped in the hospital for twenty years. It was hard-won for him to come back to life; I didn't want him to risk his life alongside mine again.
Upon hearing my words, Wang Wei shot me a resentful glance, as if I were abandoning him.
After a moment of silence, Wang Wei said, "Saning, I can't leave you."
"Get lost," I snapped back.
Wang Wei replied, "Saning, if you die, I definitely won't live long either. Although it's quiet here now, once the funeral begins, escaping will be very difficult."
I knew Wang Wei was right. Last time during the Live Burial, so many Paper Men were bowing together, chanting mournful songs, and I nearly died both physically and spiritually.
"If I die, you won't live long either. What does it matter to you now?"
Wang Wei looked as if he wanted to say something but hesitated. I stared at him, thinking, damn it, Wang Wei, aren't you supposed to be that kind of person?
Wang Wei shot me a resentful glance, then quickly understood what I meant and said, "Get lost. I'm not that kind of person."
"Then why did you say that?"
"Because..." Before Wang Wei could finish his sentence, a look of surprise crossed my face as I noticed a procession approaching from the opposite side.
A procession made up of Paper Men was walking towards me, carrying a coffin. They were accompanied by a mournful song—a strange sight indeed. The Paper Men were infused with souls, their Soul Scatter emitting Light Spots.
Seeing me staring behind him, Wang Wei turned to look as well.
"This is a funeral procession, Saning. We need to leave now." Wang Wei's voice was urgent as I began to step back.
But just then, a voice rang out from behind me: "Husband, we can't leave." I turned to see Ke'er walking in from outside.
I called out her name, and upon hearing Ke'er’s words, Wang Wei's heart sank.
"Why not?"
Ke'er replied, "Six of the Twelve Eternal Lanterns outside have already gone out. The Everlasting Lamp will never extinguish; once it does, it means the path of life is cut off."
Ke'er was wearing a dress.
I said to Ke'er, "Can't I just avoid lying in that coffin?"
"Husband, your Fate has already been hung on the Twelve Eternal Lanterns."
"What is Fate?" This was the first time I asked Ke'er.
Ke'er replied, "Fate is determined by your Four Pillars of Destiny. Although the Twelve Eternal Lanterns are replicas, when gathered together, they can still attract thousands of Wandering Souls."
"The eternal lanterns are attached to souls; when the lanterns go out, it leads to Soul Scatter. That is what Soul Burial truly means," Ke'er said calmly.
Wang Wei asked anxiously, "But there are still six lanterns left, right? We can still make it if we leave now."
"You might make it, but Husband cannot. If six eternal lanterns have gone out, it means that the person whose Fate is hung there can no longer escape."
Although I didn't fully understand, I grasped the essence of what was being said. I fell silent for a moment.
Wang Wei said, "So is it over then?"
Ke'er furrowed her brow. I looked at her and noticed that her spirit seemed to have thickened a bit.
A mournful song echoed in our ears as the funeral procession drew closer. Suddenly, I asked, "If someone's Fate is hung on a true eternal lantern, does that mean they will live forever?"
Ke'er replied that theoretically, yes.
Soul Burial—this is what Soul Burial is. Just moments ago, I was wondering why the eternal lanterns were placed outside instead of inside.
Ke'er suddenly asked, "What about Chen San?"
"I said I would go find that Evil Being," I told Ke'er, "Chen San asked me to save him."
Ke'er suddenly spoke coldly, "He's about to die, and he deserves it, Husband. You should trust him less in the future."
"What should we do now?"
"Now we need to go out and light the everlasting lamp," Wang Wei said. "But how do we light it?"
"With a soul," Ke'er replied succinctly.
The coffin was getting closer, but the Paper Men were not targeting me at this moment; instead, they carried the coffin to the exit.
A chilling aura began to envelop this place.
Ke'er angrily said to me, "Husband, you must listen to Ke'er from now on, or else Ke'er won't pay attention to you anymore."
I called out to Ke'er and apologized because I always made her worry.
Wang Wei chimed in that we were being sour, and both Ke'er and I told him to get lost.
Just then, I received a message from Chen San: "I found him."
