Looking at the red blood flowing from the bottom of the coffin, my heart suddenly dropped into my throat. I suspected that it must contain something alive.
Was it a fat man or Chen San?
Wang Wei, who was anxiously concerned about the eternal lanterns, said, "Saning, there are only five. If these five go out, we're done for."
But my gaze remained fixed on the coffin.
I called out to Wang Wei, "Let's open this coffin."
Wang Wei turned to look at me and said, "Saning, you can't be serious! At a time like this, when you're struggling to save yourself, you want to open a coffin?"
I countered, "Do you have any way to light the eternal lanterns outside?"
Wang Wei was momentarily stumped by my question and couldn't respond. Finally, he said, "There must be a way to do that!"
I replied, "First, let's open this coffin. Maybe there's something inside that we need."
I could only stare at the red blood, feeling that it might contain someone familiar to me.
Wang Wei stood beside me and followed my gaze. He quickly noticed the red blood as well. Taking a deep breath, he said, "Saning, there's blood! We can't open it; a coffin with blood is a cursed one."
Wang Wei's statement seemed unfounded! It was very likely that the blood flowing from the coffin belonged to someone alive inside, and I was seriously beginning to suspect that it contained the fat man.
Just as I thought this, the coffin shook again. Bai Duyin's new chapter echoed in my mind.
I gasped in surprise, and Wang Wei did the same. A tense hand had already gripped mine; I shot a disdainful glance at Wang Wei.
"Wang Wei" pretended not to hear and said, "Saning, it's really dangerous here. Be careful."
"Damn it, let go of my hand," "Wang Wei" replied, unusually cautious about his life since coming back. He finally released his grip after I cursed at him.
I took a step toward the coffin, the smell of blood already permeating the air. I leaned against the coffin and called out, "Zhang Fatty." As soon as I spoke, the coffin shook slightly as if in response.
At that moment, those "Paper Men" were standing behind me again.
I felt a bit nervous and called out for Zhang Fatty once more. The coffin trembled again, and by now, I was fairly certain that Zhang Fatty was inside.
I set down the "White Lantern," grasped the edge of the coffin with both hands, and prepared to lift the lid, but I couldn't do it alone!
The coffin wasn't sealed shut; the person inside likely couldn't climb out because their body was trapped within.
Having previously stepped inside, I felt an inexplicable familiarity with this coffin.
I called out to "Wang Wei."
"Wang Wei" stood behind me and asked what I was doing.
I told him to come over and help me. "Wang Wei" hesitated and reminded me again, "Saning, a bloodied coffin is most likely a cursed one."
"What cursed coffin? Maybe the person inside isn't dead yet and is just bleeding!" I replied.
"Saning, I've been in this line of work for a few years now. I have more experience with coffins than you do. I can guarantee that there's definitely no living person inside," "Wang Wei" said as he stepped forward.
I looked at "Wang Wei" suspiciously. He met my doubtful gaze and said, "Don't believe me? I'll open it for you to see. Saning, let's do it together."
I nodded, and then we both lifted the edge of the coffin. After counting to three, we flipped the lid off together. At that moment, "Wang Wei" said, "You still don't believe me, Saning? Look."
I didn't need Wang Wei to remind me; as soon as the coffin was opened, I immediately looked inside. After taking a glance, my scalp tingled with unease.
So, as soon as Wang Wei finished speaking, I shouted, "What are you still looking at? Let's get out of here!"
I had already taken a step back when Wang Wei seemed to take a second to process it. He glanced into the coffin and then let out a strange cry before following me.
He cursed me for being ungrateful, but I had already started running. I was secretly shocked; I never expected that thing would be buried in the coffin.
Wang Wei was right; a coffin with blood was indeed a cursed one.
I took another step back and shouted, "Damn it, Saning, they're catching up!"
I replied, "If they're catching up, just run!"
Wang Wei was panting heavily and began to complain about me. He said he had warned against opening it, and now look where we were. I ignored him and kept running.
However, after only a few steps, I suddenly felt my body freeze because I realized my soul was inching out of my body again.
Behind me were the Blood Worms crawling out of the coffin. There had been a decayed corpse inside that they had completely devoured.
As I ran, my soul surged forward as if desperately trying to escape.
But I managed to suppress it.
At this point, Wang Wei had already pulled ahead of me by five or six steps and turned back to smile at me.
My expression was grave; I had no time to pay attention to Wang Wei. He had created quite a distance between us while the Blood Worms relentlessly pursued us.
Wang Wei turned his head and said, "Saning, what are you doing? This isn't a game!"
I could already feel a subtle pain creeping up my nerves.
"Wang Wei" finally said, "I'm scared of you," and then turned around, hoisting me up and running. My condition was extremely poor, and "Wang Wei" sprinted with me on his back.
After circling around those iron lumps a few times, he finally managed to shake off the "Blood Worms."
The coffin contained no body; it was filled with "Blood Worms." Breathing heavily, "Wang Wei" set me down and asked what was wrong. I replied that I seemed unable to move my legs.
Sweat beads were forming densely on my forehead.
We hid in a corner. "Wang Wei" suggested I try taking a step. I took two or three steps and found it manageable, but when I attempted a fourth step, I realized my soul had left my body.
Crap! Am I done for? My body remained in place while my soul had already exited.
"Wang Wei" was stunned, then cried out, "Saning, don’t die! What am I supposed to do if you die?" But I didn’t hear "Wang Wei's" cries.
My soul tried to return to my body, but I found it impossible.
Could it be that the "Soul Burial" had already been completed? I asked "Wang Wei" to keep an eye on my body while I headed toward the door. The "Blood Worms" could eat corpses; they surely couldn’t consume souls.
In my spectral state, I quickly reached the entrance. However, I noticed five eternal lamps still lit! So why had my soul separated from my body?
I was quite curious. The coffin remained in place; it was merely opened by "Wang Wei" and me.
How did my soul leave my body, and why couldn’t I return? I looked at the eternal lamps outside and saw one extinguish before my eyes. After it went out, I felt nothing at all.
Now only four eternal lamps remained. I glanced at them when suddenly the coffin shook again. I was astonished; could it be that the "Blood Worms" inside hadn’t crawled out completely?
I cautiously approached the coffin, but when I looked inside again, the original "Blood Worms" were gone.
The coffin was impeccably clean, yet it contained a corpse. As I gazed at the lifeless body, shock washed over me, quickly followed by a chilling sensation.
Without a second thought, I turned and sprinted towards Wang Wei. My mind was blank; I couldn't fathom what was happening.
When I reached the original spot, I discovered that Wang Wei was no longer there.
Panic began to set in as I muttered to myself, "How is this possible?" I called out for Wang Wei, but there was no response. The Paper Men continued to follow me, never leaving my side.
I searched the area for Wang Wei again, but there was still no sign of him. This was infuriating—had I fallen into a trap?
I returned to the entrance and stood beside the coffin once more.
Staring at the corpse inside, disbelief coursed through me. It was simply too absurd; it felt impossible!
Damn it, because lying in that coffin was my own body.
I had explicitly asked Wang Wei to keep an eye on my body, so how had it ended up here? Had Wang Wei betrayed me?
No way! That made no sense! It must be that these Paper Men attacked Wang Wei and took my body, burying it in this coffin.
As I pondered this theory, my heart sank further. Looking at my own lifeless form in the coffin, I couldn't help but reach out to touch it. But as soon as my fingers brushed against the surface, a wave of cold dread washed over me.
