"Why can't we leave? We want to go," Wang Wei said directly.
"You can leave, Saning, but you cannot," came the reply.
Wang Wei urged me to go.
Chen San then said to me, "Saning, you cannot leave. This Revival Ritual is beneficial for you."
"For me?" I asked, feeling a bit unsettled.
Chen San nodded.
But Wang Wei interjected, "Saning, don't listen to their nonsense. Chen San and that old man are not good people." In fact, Wang Wei wasn't entirely wrong; it was unrealistic to think I could fully trust Chen San, and as for the Temple Guardian, that was even more questionable.
My impression of him was limited to the fact that he had once told me where Soybean's body was located.
"Saning, your eyesight might improve here," Chen San said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Wang Wei continued to advise me not to be swayed.
Finally unable to hold back, Chen San snapped at Wang Wei, "You keep insisting that Saning should leave. Are you afraid that Saning will hinder that person's revival?"
Chen San's words struck home, leaving Wang Wei with nowhere to hide. His expression changed instantly. I glanced at Wang Wei, who stood frozen in place.
But I couldn't believe it! Wang Wei had been trapped by "him" for twenty years; surely he harbored more hatred than a desire to help him come back to life!
I asked Wang Wei, "Is what Chen San said true?"
Wang Wei looked at me with a hint of distraction. I wondered if he had done something behind my back. My heart began to race with unease. Was this yet another betrayal?
I stared at Wang Wei.
Wang Wei finally said, "Saning, do you trust me? We're buddies; I would never hurt you."
I asked directly, "Damn it, Wang Wei, is what Chen San just said true or false?"
Wang Wei's expression froze. He replied, "Saning, I do have a bit of selfishness, but if he lives, it benefits both of us."
"You damn it, shut up and stop with the nonsense."
I remembered Wang Wei saying that once I got these eyes, I would gain many things behind them, including Wang Wei himself. I recalled it clearly at that moment.
But now it seemed that statement was about to change. I took a deep breath.
Wang Wei explained, "Saning, I never calculated this; it was only when the old man mentioned it that I had this little selfish thought."
I stopped responding to Wang Wei. I thought to myself that this bastard had been trapped by him for twenty years and still wanted to help him come back to life.
Is this guy a masochist?
But if he wants to come back to life, so be it!
"Damn it, what a mess."
Forget it. I'm going home; whether he comes back to life or not is none of my business. I called out to Ke'er and said we were going home.
Wang Wei followed behind me.
I cursed under my breath, "Get lost."
"Wang Wei," he said shamelessly, "I was wrong."
"Get lost," I cursed. But just a few steps later, the Temple Guardian called out to me, saying, "Saning, Wang Wei, do you really think this is a Revival Ritual? Wang Wei, do you think he can still live? How did he die? Can he come back to life?"
The old man's words struck me like thunder.
Things were changing too quickly; not far away, it seemed that a soul was bringing a coffin closer.
"Saning, if your eyes do not recover, you will be doomed to eternal descent," the Temple Guardian added.
I couldn't help but ask, "Who exactly are you?"
I remembered my mother saying that this old man was no good. Eternal descent—what did that even mean?
Xiaoru, who appeared delicate, always spoke words that cut deep. She explained the old man's words: "Eternal descent means your soul could rot away, endlessly rotting..."
"And what if it rots?"
Just hearing the term "rotting soul" sent chills down my spine. Ke'er’s expression changed; she said, "Husband, stay here."
I turned to look at Ke'er. She continued, "If the soul rots, it will be doomed to eternal descent. At that point, you will never see light again—not even darkness."
As Ke'er spoke, her face grew increasingly pale.
The soul seemed unstable. I looked at the faceless soul standing beside Ke'er and suggested it enter her.
The faceless soul shook its head at my words. Damn it, it actually refused to go in. I felt like going up and giving it a good beating.
Just as I took a few steps forward, the faceless soul seemed to sense my emotions and immediately entered Ke'er's body.
I suddenly teased Wang Wei, "What would you think if I stayed?"
Wang Wei looked at me in surprise, then let out a heavy sigh and said, "Saning, you should stay."
This caught me off guard; Wang Wei actually wanted me to stay after insisting I leave before. But the decay of the soul, this kind of pain, is something no one can bear.
And it would continue to rot...
"Saning, have you thought it through?" the Temple Guardian asked me.
I replied that I was almost ready, but I had one last question. The old man had told me to ask, so I did: "Old man, who exactly are you?"
The old man's gaze seemed to drift far away. Finally, he said, "I am the one behind these eyes..."
After the Temple Guardian spoke, I was quite shocked. If that were the case, then after his resurrection, he would also have a pair of white eyes. Wouldn't it be better for him to be resurrected?
Why did he still need me? Wang Wei had initially chosen to resurrect him.
But I guessed the old man understood clearly that he could not be resurrected. Even if they were willing to bring him back, perhaps...
At this moment, Chen San had already changed sides; he was now aligned with the Temple Guardian.
A coffin had emerged, surrounded by souls. It floated away from its place and drifted through the night sky, illuminated by those bright lights.
This coffin resembled a ghost ship sailing toward us.
The scent of incense filled the air...
Yet here there was a profound silence; among the crowd, there was hardly any noise. Aside from our few arguments, everyone else seemed like "walking corpses," completely motionless.
"Will you stay?" I uttered those three words, as if asking myself and others at the same time.
Eternal descent, the soul will rot.
"If you can bear this pain, then go," Xiaoru said to me.
"You know this pain?"
Xiaoru shook her head and replied, "I don't know, but I know who has suffered this torment." She glanced our way, though her gaze didn't seem to be directed at me.
Behind me stood three people: Jianjian, Wang Wei, and Ke'er.
"Husband, you should stay," Ke'er said with certainty. In the end, I nodded in agreement. Then I would stay.
Wang Wei let out a sigh of relief.
I called out to Wang Wei, "If I stay, will you blame me?"
Wang Wei hadn't expected me to ask him that suddenly. He looked a bit surprised and said, "Saning, I won't blame you. It's fine."
After hearing that, I immediately started cursing: "Wang Wei, you bastard! If you keep any secrets from me in the future, I swear I'll beat you for three days and nights."
Upon hearing my threat, Wang Wei replied, "Saning, don't worry. I definitely won't keep secrets from you anymore. By the way, I actually have a secret to tell you right now. Well, there's actually another secret hidden inside my body..."
"Shut up."
"Saning, I'm serious. I'm not joking..."
But just when I thought Wang Wei was rambling nonsense, at that moment, the Theater Troupe arrived near the temple like the emcee of a funeral.
As I approached the crowd of over a thousand people, they suddenly parted, creating a space in the center.
In the moonlight, a faint blue smoke was visible.
“Burial…” A melodious voice, reminiscent of a performer, broke the tranquility of the night, as if it had pierced through the devotion of the multitude.
At the sound of Burial, everyone swiftly knelt down. The scene was truly astonishing; over a thousand people kneeling simultaneously. In the dim light of the night, their heads were obscured, but I could hear the sound of knees hitting the ground.
This was far more impressive than my previous experience with Live Burial.
I stared in astonishment.
“Saning, where’s the eternal lamp?”
At that moment, I directly admitted that I hadn’t brought it.
Chen San and the old man looked at me in surprise, as if they believed I was lying to them. But I had indeed left the White Lantern at home.
“I really didn’t bring it,” I insisted.
However, Temple Guardian said to me, “Saning, you did bring it…”
