Wang Wei watched as the foolish soul suddenly began to wail, rushing forward as if to teach the soul a lesson, but was pulled back by Chen San.
"Something's not right," Chen San said.
Wang Wei, feeling a bit displeased at being restrained, replied, "Stop being paranoid."
I too sensed something was off; the soul's cries seemed to have changed, taking on a more sorrowful tone than before.
The soul wailed, and soon the other Light Spots began to emit faint sobs as well.
I looked at these Light Spots and then surveyed the surrounding environment.
The foolish soul no longer wished to move forward. Perhaps Third Uncle was just ahead; I made a mental note of this.
I knew that this foolish soul must have felt fear, which was why it dared not advance any further.
Third Uncle was either not far ahead or nearby; Ke'er had just warned us to be cautious of him.
The foolish soul had become aware of its surroundings.
We halted our steps, and the Light Spots of these souls allowed me to see the area more clearly.
Wang Wei asked, "What’s wrong after three years?"
I replied to Wang Wei, "Why don’t you go ahead and scout the path? See what’s going on."
Wang Wei agreed and ran ahead. However, he didn’t go far before returning. He said, "Saning, are you really okay with me going alone?"
Hearing this, I couldn't help but curse. "Damn it, just go already!"
"Ke'er," she said, holding my hand, "Husband, Third Uncle is the offspring of the Evil Idol. His body may not be his true form."
"Then where is his true form?"
Ke'er shook her head, indicating she didn't know.
Wang Wei had already run off, dragging along that foolish soul with him.
I glanced around at the surroundings and suddenly felt a sense of unfamiliarity. The area east of this temple was quite far from my village. Perhaps it was because I had come here so infrequently that it felt strange.
As we continued forward, more trees began to line the roadside, as the mountains and forests were just behind us.
Under the beam of our flashlight, part of this place was illuminated, but the shadows cast by the trees on either side appeared mottled in the light.
The trees on both sides enclosed a narrow path in between.
Once we entered, I sensed a chilling aura swirling around us.
A cold wind blew, causing the trees to sway gently. The weather was still somewhat chilly, with Wang Wei and the foolish Linghu walking ahead.
Before long, they ran back.
"Ke'er," she said beside me, "Husband, after the Evil Idol matures, his true form will definitely be hidden in a concealed place. However, his true form must have some connection to his current body; otherwise, we wouldn't be able to find it and kill Third Uncle."
Ke'er used the words "kill," but I also felt that Third Uncle truly deserved to die.
Having caused so many deaths, his very existence was a sin.
Wang Wei returned and said, "Saning, I sense danger."
I said to Wang Wei, "Did you notice anything unusual ahead?"
"I didn't feel anything. It's just that the foolish soul wouldn't leave. I gave it a beating, but it still refused to go."
I cast a disdainful glance at Wang Wei. The foolish soul was now drifting toward me. Fear is not something only humans can perceive; often, souls are much more sensitive than we living beings.
Reaching this point, I let the soul dissipate on its own.
The other Wandering Souls had departed, but that foolish Linghu remained, trembling in front of me.
I couldn't help but ask, "Do you have any last wishes?"
The foolish soul couldn't speak but pointed at my eyes.
"My eyes?" I asked, puzzled.
The foolish soul seemed to realize I was pointing at its own eyes and nodded eagerly.
However, as soon as I moved my hand away, the soul suddenly took advantage of my distraction and transformed into a Light Spot, diving into my eyes.
I was startled and took a few steps back.
But at that moment, the foolish soul suddenly became less foolish, like a moth drawn to a flame, rushing toward my eyes without hesitation.
The soul entered my eye and instantly vanished without a trace.
Wang Wei couldn't help but curse, "Why can't this soul understand? Going into Saning's eyes is like seeking death."
In truth, at that moment, my thoughts were similar to Wang Wei's. My eyes could devour souls; any soul that entered them would essentially be doomed.
Was there really so many souls wanting to enter death?
After that soul rushed towards the flame, more souls came towards me, but I drove them back. Isn't it better to go for reincarnation?
At this moment, Jianjian called out to me, "Saning Brother."
I asked, "What’s wrong?"
Jianjian looked at me and said, "Saning Brother, I feel scared."
I felt scared too! It was strange not to be frightened wandering in the mountains at night. The eerie environment, combined with the biting cold wind, made me shiver.
The time was only around eight or nine o'clock.
As we moved forward, we came to a fork in the road—one path was wide and clear, while the other was a narrow winding trail.
I was told to take the small path, so I didn’t hesitate and chose it.
Chen San and Xiaoru remained silent, like ghosts following us through the night; they seemed odd.
Perhaps the reason I found them strange was that I didn’t know them well. If I understood them better, I probably wouldn’t find them so peculiar.
The trees lining the narrow path were larger than those before, towering giants that must have taken decades or even centuries to grow into their current majestic forms.
The small path was tightly enclosed, and just then, a sudden howl from an animal pierced the silence.
Ke'er tightened her grip on my arm instinctively.
I glanced ahead; in the areas where the flashlight couldn't reach, it was pitch black.
I had never known that there was this place near the village. The further we went down, the more uneasy I felt, and to be honest, this place had an air of concealment about it.
After walking for about a quarter of an hour, a house appeared before us.
To be precise, it was a wooden structure, roughly two stories high. As I focused on it, I initially judged that this house must be quite old.
The wooden exterior showed many signs of wear and tear.
The tree rings were almost entirely cracked. In the crevices, I could see insects living inside.
"This place is eerie!" Wang Wei said.
I agreed; the house was sinister, and hidden away in such a remote area, it surely harbored something strange.
In my mind, I couldn't help but conjure up a horrifying image: inside, it looked as if it were hung with sausages—filled with corpses, blood everywhere, pooling on the ground.
I imagined stepping inside only to have a dead hand grab my ankle and drag me in with all its might.
I shook my head to dispel the terrifying picture from my thoughts.
Could this be Third Uncle's residence? I wondered if Third Uncle himself was hiding inside.
Jianjian said, "Can we not go in?"
I was surprised by Jianjian's words. I looked at her in astonishment; I had always been curious about what differentiated her eyes from mine.
There were things she could see that I sometimes couldn't, while I could see things she seemed unaware of. But for now, it seemed like she couldn't see anything at all.
However, if Jianjian doesn't want to take the risk, then I won't force her.
I nodded and said to Wang Wei, "You and Jianjian wait outside. You should protect Jianjian."
Wang Wei was already feeling apprehensive, and upon hearing my words, he felt relieved! He immediately agreed, but there was someone who did not agree.
Because Jianjian changed her mind again and said, "Saning Brother, I think I should go in with you."
Before I could react, Wang Wei reacted even more strongly. He said, "Miss Jianjian, there might be a thousand ghosts hidden inside."
Jianjian ignored Wang Wei because ever since her mother’s issues were resolved, she had become less afraid of ghosts.
"Do you want to go in?" I asked.
Jianjian nodded.
Ke'er glanced at Jianjian and asked, "What do you want to go in for?"
Jianjian probably didn't expect Ke'er to ask that. It seemed she couldn't come up with a reason on the spot and finally said, "I feel this building is strange, and it's not safe outside."
Wang Wei, who was just lying there, felt the impact too. However, after glancing around, he also thought Jianjian had a point.
Ke'er continued to stare at Jianjian, seemingly unsatisfied with her answer.
