Jianjian showed a hint of panic, but quickly added, "I just feel less scared when I'm with Saning Brother." Her voice carried a touch of grievance.
Ke'er snorted coldly but didn't say anything further.
The atmosphere seemed a bit awkward. I hurriedly stepped in to ease the tension and called out to Wang Wei. He looked at me in surprise and asked, "What’s up, Saning?"
I told Wang Wei, "You go ahead."
After I spoke, Wang Wei wore a bitter face, but he still chose to move forward. However, as he passed by me, I stepped in front of him and walked ahead.
Ke'er followed me, and we took the lead. Wang Wei said, "Saning, didn’t you say I should walk in front?"
I replied, "Wang Wei, if you want to go ahead, the path is wide enough for you."
Wang Wei, being a smart guy, remarked, "Alright then." I took a drag from my cigarette and said, "You go inside and wait for me."
I nodded in response and didn’t continue to tease Wang Wei.
Ke'er walked ahead with me while Jianjian trailed behind Wang Wei. Chen San and Xiaoru brought up the rear.
At this point, we were only about a hundred meters away from the Wooden Tower. In less than a minute, we arrived at the entrance.
The wooden door was tall and intricately carved, but it was made of paper, resembling the doors seen in ancient costume dramas.
I pushed the door open.
With a creak, the wooden door swung open, and a cloud of dust billowed down, causing me to cough a few times.
The beam of my flashlight illuminated the interior, revealing a foyer furnished with tables and chairs.
I stepped inside.
It was eerily silent. So silent that not even a ghost could be found.
A heavy musty smell lingered in the air as I walked in. Just then, I spotted some candles and lit one.
The flickering candlelight brightened the space a bit.
I couldn't help but wonder why there were no lights installed here. Even though the house was old and perhaps located in a remote area, installing lights shouldn't be a difficult task.
At this point, we had all entered the house.
I wasn't sure if Third Uncle was here, so I suggested that everyone split up to search for him.
The house was quite large, but it had been uninhabited for a long time. I wondered if Third Uncle was really here.
I ran my hand across the table and sighed, wondering how long it had been since anyone lived here. Jianjian, however, did not follow me; instead, it went around me and headed toward the end of the front hall.
When it reached the end, Jianjian stopped. I called out to Jianjian, asking it not to wander around.
But Jianjian did not respond.
The place was shrouded in endless darkness, so much so that even light could not completely dispel it.
After calling out a couple of times, Jianjian still did not answer.
I asked Wang Wei to take a look.
At that moment, Chen San and Xiaoru had already gone up to the second floor. The sound of their footsteps on the wooden boards echoed occasionally.
I warned them to be careful.
Chen San peeked through the gap in the Wooden Tower staircase and said, "Don't worry."
The previous Wraith had dared not advance after arriving here, so the only thing that could instill such fear in them must be Third Uncle.
An Evil Idol capable of separating soul from body with just a knife.
Wang Wei stepped forward and called out for Jianjian, but when Jianjian didn’t respond, he stared ahead alongside Jianjian. I called out to Wang Wei.
The first call received no response. Damn it, what the hell is Wang Wei doing?
It wasn't until I called out a second time that Wang Wei snapped back to reality.
Wang Wei turned to me and said, "Saning, come over here and take a look."
I told him not to waste time and to hurry up and find Third Uncle, but Wang Wei insisted, "Saning, come see if this looks like Third Uncle."
Hearing this, I hurried over, and as soon as I arrived, I saw what Wang Wei was talking about.
What he referred to was a statue placed on the Altar, but it looked as if it had been molded from clay.
It was a "clay statue." I examined it closely and thought, hey! It does resemble Third Uncle a bit! Could this actually be Third Uncle?
Earlier, Ke'er mentioned that Third Uncle was an Evil Idol, so this clay statue might very well be the Evil Idol.
The conclusion I reached was that this clay statue is indeed Third Uncle.
I called out to Ke'er, who responded with "Husband." I asked her, "Does this look like the Evil Idol?"
Ke'er looked at it for a moment before she spoke.
She simply said, "It does."
Ke'er spoke with uncertainty, but what surprised me was Jianjian's outright denial. After Jianjian finished speaking, I was momentarily taken aback.
What is the Evil Idol? Does Jianjian know? If not, how could Jianjian be so sure to deny it?
Could it be that Jianjian knows about the Evil Idol?
I waited for Jianjian to continue.
But then Jianjian suddenly exclaimed, "Saning Brother, this is a Clay Bodhisattva."
"Clay Bodhisattva?" I asked.
Jianjian confirmed that it was indeed a Clay Bodhisattva.
I recalled a saying I had heard: "A Clay Bodhisattva crossing the river cannot protect itself." Is there a difference between this Clay Bodhisattva and that one?
Moreover, I found Jianjian's statement somewhat untrustworthy.
What do the words "Bodhisattva" represent? They signify divinity.
Can a clay statue that is not divine be called a Bodhisattva?
Third Uncle is clearly not a Bodhisattva; how could he be called one? At most, he is just a clay figure.
I asked Jianjian, "Where did you learn all this?"
But Jianjian suddenly said she read it in a book.
A book? I thought to myself, what kind of book would write such things! Jianjian's words left me somewhat confused.
Was this clay figure an Evil Idol or a Clay Bodhisattva?
I looked at Ke'er, but her gaze was uncertain. Finally, she called me Husband and said, "It's not wrong to say it's a Clay Bodhisattva."
The more I listened, the more muddled I became; I couldn't figure out whether it was a Clay Bodhisattva or an Evil Idol.
But no matter what it was, as long as it was the true form of Third Uncle, it definitely wasn't anything good. I reached out to grab the Evil Idol.
However, Jianjian stopped me.
"Saning Brother," Jianjian said, "the book says this thing brings misfortune and curses." Her voice was somewhat weak.
Looking at the Evil Idol, I couldn't see any mystery; it just seemed like an ordinary object.
I couldn't help but say to Jianjian, "Sometimes books can contain false information."
Jianjian stared at me and said, "But the book I read can't be false." I thought to myself how naive she was. Just a few days ago, experts claimed they had unearthed a child's corpse from Cao Cao's tomb, saying it belonged to Cao Cao as a child. If what the experts said was false, then the writings of those who authored such books could also be false.
I ignored Jianjian's words and directly reached out to grab the Evil Idol. It was small enough to fit in one hand.
I thought to myself, if this is indeed the true form of Third Uncle, then if I smash it on the ground, would Third Uncle die?
With that thought in mind, I prepared to act.
Ke'er seemed to sense my intentions and called out to me, urging me not to do it.
Jianjian also looked at me with a worried expression.
Ke'er called out "Husband," saying, "Maybe what she said is true." For some reason, I felt that Ke'er seemed a bit anxious at that moment.
I held the Evil Idol tightly in my hand, momentarily frozen and unsure of what to do.
But even if it were a Clay Bodhisattva, so what?
In truth, I didn't believe that deities existed in this world; otherwise, why would there be so many vengeful spirits roaming about?
Yet, why had no gods come forth to eliminate these vengeful spirits?
Things like Evil Beings should have been subdued long ago.
But Evil Beings had survived for so long, causing countless deaths, yet they still remained alive.
I have never understood this point.
I held the Evil Idol in my hand. I believed it was an Evil Idol to some extent, but I could not accept that it was a Bodhisattva.
However, Jianjian said, "Saning Brother, you should put it down; otherwise, it might really curse you."
I cursed under my breath, "Damn it, is this Third Uncle's doing? Does Third Uncle need to curse people with such cruel methods?"
I wasn't too keen on letting go; I wanted to smash it to pieces and take down Third Uncle.
Wang Wei said, "Saning, maybe you should listen to Jianjian. That thing looks pretty creepy to me."
Has Wang Wei lost his nerve?
Ke'er also chimed in, "Husband, you should put it down for now."
After Ke'er spoke, I reluctantly placed the Evil Idol back on the Altar.
I turned to Jianjian and asked, "Isn't it said that the Clay Bodhisattva can't protect itself when crossing the river? Is this thing really that terrifying?"
In truth, Jianjian must know something given the way her eyes looked; I had never doubted that.
