After Xiaoru finished speaking, I couldn't help but feel a bit surprised.
The Spirit Tablet placed above the old man's corpse actually contained evil spirits. However, looking at those scattered Light Spots, they indeed exuded a sinister aura.
The golden light emanating from the character "seal" that Xiaoru wrote had already dissipated.
Yet, those Spirit Tablets continued to tremble incessantly.
I shielded Ke'er behind me. She called out to me, and I responded. Ke'er said, "Husband, something is wrong with this Temple Guardian's corpse."
I knew something was amiss as well.
Xiaoru had just mentioned that this old man would come back to life. I thought it was merely a case of "soul attachment," where the soul would attach itself to the body.
These Spirit Tablets were truly strange; they could actually contain souls.
Xiaoru instructed Chen San, "Quickly gather these Spirit Tablets." As soon as she finished speaking, Chen San stepped forward.
However, before Chen San could take action, I suddenly saw those souls bursting out from the Spirit Tablets.
"They're evil spirits, be careful."
But Chen San seemed completely unconcerned. He simply grabbed a Spirit Tablet with his hands and stuffed it into his clothes. I was dumbfounded; Chen San was quite a man.
At that moment, several evil spirits rushed toward me. I reached out and caught one; it surprisingly thrashed in my palm before vanishing in an instant, darting toward the Temple Guardian's corpse.
I reached out again and seized another evil spirit.
One of the evil spirits was firmly gripped in my hand when it suddenly let out a sharp, piercing scream. More evil spirits surged toward me.
The one in my hand was on the verge of dissipating.
A sharp, piercing cry echoed through the Wooden Tower, but the malevolent spirits that had been flying toward me suddenly halted. They darted instead into the corpse of the Temple Guardian.
There were about ten or so spirits in total, and I could see four or five of them entering the old man's body.
I took a few steps forward, intending to intercept the spirits, but they seemed to sense danger and instantly burrowed into the Temple Guardian's corpse.
A few Spirit Tablets stuffed into Chen San's clothing were still jumping around, along with some Light Spots.
I felt an inexplicable surge of anxiety and asked, "How many?"
Chen San replied, "Three."
I glanced at the spot where the Spirit Tablets were placed; there were still about twelve left. Adding the three that Chen San was holding, that made a total of fifteen.
Fifteen in total—aside from the one I had killed, there were still eleven spirits that had entered the Temple Guardian's body.
I stood there in a daze for a few seconds. Could the Temple Guardian's body really contain eleven souls? It seemed almost unbelievable.
Yet that was indeed what happened.
Once the eleven spirits had burrowed into the old man's body, silence returned to the area. It was as if nothing had occurred at all.
Xiaoru called out to me, "Saning, get the spirits out of the corpse."
I looked at Xiaoru, who explained, "Once these spirits enter a corpse, they choose to coexist."
At that moment, I could see multiple souls swirling around inside the Temple Guardian's body.
I didn't hesitate for long and walked forward, but Ke'er seemed a bit worried. "Possession by evil spirits can be dangerous," she said. I reassured her that it was fine, thinking to myself, is there even a soul brave enough to possess me now?
I approached the corpse of the Temple Guardian and reached out to pull out the evil spirit. It thrashed in my hand before slowly dissipating.
But just then, something unexpected happened. The evil spirit that had been writhing in my palm suddenly surged back into my hand.
In the next moment, I felt my body convulse.
I sensed another soul stirring within me, but that wasn't all; soon, all the souls from the Temple Guardian's body began to burrow into me.
It was a strange sensation. In fact, everything happened in an instant.
"Oh no!" I murmured.
A chill spread through my heart as I felt my body being overtaken.
Yet my own soul remained inside. At that moment, I had twelve souls within me. Suddenly, I reached out to pull the evil spirit out of my body.
Just then, Xiaoru wrote a character for "seal." The seal was enormous, its golden light shining several times brighter than before. It pressed down toward me.
The few evil spirits I had managed to pull out retreated back into my body as the golden light approached.
Damn it, that seal completely enveloped me.
In that instant, I felt the evil spirits huddling within me.
My face turned dark with anger as I said to Xiaoru, "What are you doing?"
Xiaoru stared at me and replied, "The evil spirits are temporarily sealed inside you."
I was taken aback by the revelation that Xiaoru had sealed the evil spirit within me. I continued to reach inside, trying to pull it out, but it felt incredibly difficult.
Just as I was finally managing to extract it, Xiaoru unexpectedly wrote the character for "Pardon" on my forehead.
Caught off guard, I couldn't react in time; Xiaoru's movements were too swift, and even Ke'er didn't have a chance to respond before she urged Xiaoru to stop.
However, Xiaoru calmly told Ke'er, "The evil spirit is safest within him. One day, it will be useful; I'm sure you understand."
Ke'er grasped Xiaoru's hand but then slowly released it.
I was still struggling to pull the evil spirit from my body.
Xiaoru added, "Darkness needs darkness," and only then did Ke'er completely let go.
Chen San glanced at me and said, "Saning, don't waste your energy; you won't be able to get it out for now." I looked at Chen San and replied, "Quickly call the madwoman to help me get this evil spirit out."
Hearing this, Xiaoru approached me and whispered, "I sealed the evil spirit inside you; one day you will thank me for it."
Xiaoru's eyes were pure and clear yet filled with unwavering determination.
The evil spirit I was gripping was wailing in agony, but I could only pull out half of it; the other half felt as if it were nailed inside me.
I loosened my grip, and what felt like gathered "stardust" instantly scattered.
Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself.
Suddenly, Xiaoru turned to me and said, "Saning, if you consider helping Chen San, I will think about helping you get these evil spirits out."
Upon hearing this, I felt a surge of displeasure; after all, wasn't this just a way of asking me to save Chen San?
I didn't respond to Xiaoru's words; instead, I became quiet, pondering why, after my eyes were reborn, I couldn't control my soul.
Ke'er stepped forward and asked me, "Husband, how do you feel?"
I replied that I was fine, except for a bit of pain when the evil spirit first entered my body. At this moment, there was no particular sensation.
I had sensed that Xiaoru was not a good person, and indeed, damn it, he really wasn't!
I took a deep breath and didn't give Xiaoru a pleasant expression.
"What have you decided?" he asked.
I said, "No way."
These eleven evil spirits hadn't caused me any harm. When the time came and the seal was lifted, I would be able to eliminate these eleven souls myself.
At that moment, Chen San's Spirit Tablet was still trembling in his arms. However, I noticed that one of his hands gripping the token burst with blood, which flowed directly into the Spirit Tablet. Instantly, the souls within it became quiet.
The evil spirit didn't coexist within the Temple Guardian's body but rather in mine. Encountering someone like Xiaoru left me with no choice but to accept my fate.
I reassured Ke'er not to worry and asked Chen San, "Do you have any other discoveries?"
Chen San replied that there were none.
I said I would head down now. Just as my words fell, as if in response to me, I suddenly heard Third Uncle call my name.
"Saning."
I immediately became alert.
I looked around but couldn't see any sign of Third Uncle.
"Third Uncle."
He didn't appear, but instead asked me, "Saning, are you here to kill me?" Third Uncle was very direct, so direct that I didn't know how to respond.
After a moment, I said, "Third Uncle, what are you doing all this for?"
The soul and body should be one, and when the soul leaves the body, it means death. I didn't understand what Third Uncle was trying to prove.
And naturally, I had no idea.
How could I guess the thoughts of a Clay Bodhisattva?
Unless Third Uncle himself had no soul and wanted to create one for himself.
As I waited for Third Uncle's response, he suddenly let out a cold laugh and said, "Saning, you don't understand me. You still don't understand me."
I replied, "Third Uncle, you've done such things; how could I possibly understand you?"
Third Uncle burst into laughter and said, "Saning, haven't you done even less than I have?"
