When I returned home in the evening, Wang Wei asked me what I had been doing all day.
I didn't answer Wang Wei's question but instead asked if Ke'er had shown up. Wang Wei said no.
I was puzzled and asked, "Really?"
Wang Wei confirmed, "No."
How could Ke'er not have appeared by this time? I had spent the entire day preparing for the matters concerning the River of Despair. Yiyan had told me that the entrance to the River of Despair was actually hidden in a place you would most easily overlook.
At first, I didn't quite understand, but after Yiyan explained a bit more, I realized that the so-called River of Despair was hidden within a person's soul.
I was shocked to hear this, but upon reflection, it seemed possible. However, Yiyan had ultimately told me that everything was an illusion and advised me not to become too obsessed.
I chose to ignore that statement.
But now, with Ke'er absent, I felt helpless. Even if I knew where the River of Despair was located, it was still an illusion.
The River of Despair being hidden within a person's soul meant that entering it would inevitably damage that soul. Yet, that soul seemed unafraid of harm. What did it matter if it perished?
Currently, this secret was known only to me; I hadn't even shared it with Clay Bodhisattva.
I waited until deep into the night without any sign of Ke'er. Just then, my phone rang. I thought it might be Ke'er calling me, but when I looked at the caller ID, it was Jianjian.
I pressed the answer button. Ever since rescuing Zhang Fatty, I hadn't been in touch with Jianjian much.
After picking up the call, I asked Jianjian what was going on.
Jianjian called me "Saning Brother" and then said that Ke'er had come looking for her. My emotions surged at this news, and I quickly asked if Ke'er was still there.
But Jianjian told me, "Ke'er has already left."
I suddenly felt that Ke'er might have known where the entrance to the River of Despair was all along, which was why she chose to leave at this moment.
I anxiously asked Jianjian if Ke'er had said anything.
Jianjian suggested we meet up, and at that moment, I couldn't care less about the late hour; I opened the door and went out. Wang Wei called out to me from behind.
I ignored him.
But after running a few steps, I turned back and called out to Wang Wei, "Hurry up and drive."
Clay Bodhisattva followed me, but I told her not to cause any trouble and to wait at home with Wind Tree. Wang Wei drove me directly to the place Jianjian had arranged.
On the way, Wang Wei kept pestering me about buying a car and getting a driver's license, saying it would be convenient.
I snapped at Wang Wei to shut up.
When we arrived at the place Jianjian had chosen, a late-night café, we entered to find Jianjian sitting with Zhang Fatty. To be honest, I still hadn't fully accepted Zhang Fatty.
After I sat down, I directly asked Jianjian, "What did Ke'er say to you?"
I hadn't expected that while Ke'er disappeared without telling Wang Wei or Clay Bodhisattva anything, she had actually spoken some words to Jianjian.
Seeing my agitation, Jianjian handed me a letter. I took it and opened the envelope. It wasn't written with a pen; as I opened it, a wisp of soul floated out.
Inside the envelope was a fragment of Ke'er's soul.
Ke'er's spirit appeared in the café, but only we few could see her; no one else could.
I called out to Ke'er, and she responded with a brilliant smile, but it quickly turned into tears.
With deep emotion, Ke'er called out "Husband," and I echoed her name, "Ke'er."
At this critical moment, I certainly did not want any accidents to occur in my plan for revival. Without the Revival Pearl, I felt as if something was weighing heavily on my heart.
I took a deep breath and focused on Ke'er, urging her not to cry, not to cry.
Yet the soul of Ke'er continued to weep. I stepped forward, wanting to embrace her, but I could not hold onto this fleeting spirit.
How could I not hold on? I could embrace anything that wasn't a soul.
Perhaps I was losing my composure; the waiter was watching me. Wang Wei hurried over and pulled me back, saying, "Saning, there are so many people watching."
I told Wang Wei to leave me alone. The situation had escalated to this point; as long as I entered the River of Despair and plucked the Reincarnation Flower from the Reincarnation Tree, I would be able to revive Ke'er. But at that moment, Ke'er was nowhere to be found.
I felt as if all my efforts had been in vain. I had risked everything to cross the River of Yellow Springs, yet in the end, Ke'er had vanished without a trace.
Ke'er was still crying, and I urged her to stop.
I asked, "Ke'er, can you come back?"
But this soul was clearly just a memory; it merely conveyed some words that Ke'er wanted to say before dissipating into nothingness.
Ke'er mentioned that she needed to find another soul and asked me to wait for her.
However, she didn't even tell me where she would go to find that other soul, leaving me feeling somewhat lost.
After Ke'er’s soul dissipated, I sat in my seat and asked Jianjian if Ke'er had said anything else. Jianjian shook her head, perhaps because I looked somewhat terrifying at that moment, which made her appear a bit anxious.
Zhang, the chubby guy, called out to me.
I told Zhang to shut up and not to say anything.
“Did she really not say anything?”
Jianjian reassured me, saying, “Sister Ke'er will come back.”
With a sigh, I called out to Wang Wei and left. We exited the café, and I clutched the envelope tightly as I walked away.
Damn it, River of Despair, damn it all to the River of Despair.
Wang Wei handed me a cigarette. I lit it up and quickly finished it, then took another one and smoked that just as fast.
The car was soon filled with smoke.
Wang Wei rolled down the window and said he felt like he was in paradise. I told him to stop talking nonsense.
When we got home, I wore a gloomy expression. I lit another cigarette when Wind Tree called out to me.
Wind Tree stepped in front of me and said I shouldn’t smoke and that I shouldn’t be sad.
I replied that I wasn’t sad and told Wind Tree not to overthink it.
But Wind Tree insisted that I was sad and wouldn’t allow me to be upset. I looked up at Wind Tree; her eyes were already red. Seeing this made me anxious, and I asked her what was wrong.
Wind Tree told me, “Brother, you’re not allowed to be sad. If you’re sad, then I’m sad too.”
"Alright, I won't be sad anymore, and you mustn't be sad either," I said.
Then I forced a smile, and Wind Tree smiled back, though her eyes were filled with tears, making her look quite frightening. Children's emotions change so easily.
But we adults are not like that.
Ke'er left, saying she was going to find another soul, but I suspected she was worried about me and the River of Despair, afraid that I might die.
But I am not afraid of death.
Sigh, perhaps in the end, it is as Yiyan said; my obsession runs too deep.
A sleepless night passed. Wind Tree fell asleep in my arms while Clay Bodhisattva mindlessly played games all night long, cursing his teammates the entire time.
The next day dawned.
I still hadn't slept. Last night, when Wang Wei saw my spirits low, he called me to come to the company for duty. I didn't refuse; even if my spirits were low, I still needed to eat, didn't I?
I went to the company, and around ten at night, an unexpected guest arrived. I thought it would be a ghost, but it turned out to be a person.
This person looked very young, probably around twenty years old.
Wang Wei quickly approached him with flattery and started a conversation. After all, Wang Wei was in the "ghost" business, yet here came a living person.
Wang Wei seemed somewhat uninterested because he had made a fortune from a ghost deal last time—earning a million in one go. Naturally, he wasn't impressed by small business anymore.
However, once this person entered, he walked straight towards me and asked, "Are you Saning?"
I looked at the person in front of me in surprise. Now, I took a moment to examine his appearance: he was a man in his early twenties, with a buzz cut and an average face that was passable.
However, I was still somewhat curious about this stranger who had come to find me and knew my name upon our first meeting.
I replied with a simple "yes."
Wang Wei hurriedly stepped forward and said, "This is our company's Chief Soul Reaper, Master Saning. Speaking with the Master requires a fee."
The man with the buzz cut clearly had no shortage of money. After Wang Wei finished speaking, he handed over the payment to Wang Wei. Wang Wei counted the money and didn’t have time to pay attention to him anymore.
I continued to watch the man in front of me with curiosity, choosing not to speak first but waiting for him to continue.
He then said, "Someone sent me to find you."
