"Are you really going to make me stop going to school, sis? That's amazing! I knew you cared the most about me!" Outside the school, Qiao Chen was still basking in the joy of not having to attend this school anymore.
Jono shook off Qiao Chen's hand, anger creeping onto her slightly worn face. "It's about transferring you, not letting you drop out!" She was already calculating where to find a school that would accept Qiao Chen mid-term. "You really drive me crazy! I'll just find you any school to attend, and if you can't get into college, you'll be hauling bricks!"
Qiao Chen realized that her sister was genuinely angry and bit her lip, not daring to say another word.
Seeing Qiao Chen like this only made Jono more upset, but she was just an eighteen-year-old kid; how could she take all her frustration out on him?
She turned and walked to the right, intending to head to the hospital.
Qiao Chen hurriedly followed, tugging at Jono's sleeve like a pet that had upset its owner but feared abandonment.
With that, Jono's anger dissipated; after all, she couldn't bear to be harsh. She took Qiao Chen's hand and they walked together toward the hospital.
At that moment, a black Bentley drove out of the campus, its understated luxury gliding slowly past the siblings.
In the back seat of the car, a man fixed his gaze intently on the two outside.
The secretary in the passenger seat noticed her boss's demeanor and felt puzzled. Not understanding his intentions, she could only ask, "Are you planning to help the Qiao siblings?"
The man in the back did not respond immediately. Instead, he withdrew his gaze from the brother and sister outside. His eyesight was sharp enough to see the bittersweet smiles on Jono and Qiao Chen's faces.
He turned around and said slowly, "No, we are mutually beneficial."
"Uh?" Alice didn't understand. She wanted to ask something more, but from the rearview mirror, she saw Jin Chengyan had already closed his eyes.
A couple of days later, the lawyer's letter indeed arrived at Jono's temporary apartment. It seemed that the other party was not planning to let Qiao Chen off the hook.
She definitely couldn't let Qiao Chen know about this; otherwise, with his impulsive nature, who knew what he might do. To make matters worse, no school was willing to accept Qiao Chen. As a transfer student with average grades, public schools naturally did not want to take on such a risk.
She was struggling to find a job and had no money to pay for medical expenses... Now Jono didn't even know what the worst situation was because there were even worse things waiting for her!
She received a call while at the hospital stairs, informing her about a job that paid only three thousand a month. For a recent graduate, it was indeed a decent job, but the location was too far and the hours were long. Jono hesitated about whether to accept it...
"Sis, sis..." Qiao Chen rushed over anxiously and grabbed Jono's arm. "They pushed Dad out of the ICU. Are they not going to save him anymore?"
Upon hearing this, Jono immediately hung up the phone and ran toward the ward.
Why? Just because they hadn't paid the hospital fees for a few days, they were going to kick her father out of the ICU? She had promised that she would pay them as soon as she had the money; couldn't they wait just a few more days?
When she reached the ward, she saw the nurses removing all the equipment from her father's body. Her father lay there unresponsive as the nurses worked around him.
"Why are you doing this to my dad?" Jono wanted to put the equipment back on him, but she didn't know how.
"Miss Qiao, you already owe the hospital too much money. The daily cost in the ICU is nearly ten thousand. The hospital has no obligation to treat you for free. However, the director is kind-hearted and has agreed to free up a bed for you," the nurse said before leaving.
Jono wanted to say something more, but her feet were rooted to the spot, unable to move.
What was wrong with the nurse's words? They indeed had not paid the hospitalization fees. The daily treatment cost in the ICU was so high; the hospital was not a charity. Why should they provide services without compensation? They had even kindly refrained from directly discharging her father from the hospital. What more could they do?
In that moment, a thought flashed through Jono's mind that she had never considered before.
Fortunately, Qiao Chen pulled her back.
"Sis, let's transfer Dad to another hospital. I won't go to school; I'll go find a job right now. I will figure something out!"
Jono looked at Qiao Chen's youthful face, which showed determination. He was still wearing the uniform of Noble School because ever since they were kicked out of their home, they weren't allowed to take anything with them.
Qiao Chen was a child who couldn't endure hardship. These days, sleeping on the hard board bed had made him uncomfortable, especially in the beginning when he struggled with the unyielding mattress.
"Xiao Chen, you stay here and be good. I'm going out for a bit; I'll be back soon." Somewhere deep inside, she had already made up her mind.
"Sis, where are you going?" Qiao Chen had never seen Jono like this before; it was as if she were in a trance. After saying that, she left without caring about anything else!
But miraculously, two hours later, the hospital staff returned her father to the ICU!
