Jono stepped out of the shower, wrapped in a large bath towel that was tightly secured around her waist. She had just looked in the mirror and noticed her cheeks were quite swollen. If she went back now, Qiao Chen would definitely interrogate her, so she decided to step out and find a phone to call him, to avoid worrying him.
There was a phone in the living room, and Jono dialed Qiao Chen's number.
When Qiao Chen received the unfamiliar call and realized it was his sister, he was surprised, especially since he knew her phone had been mysteriously stolen.
"Xia Chen, I’ll be working late at the office today. I’ll go straight to the hospital tomorrow; you don’t have to wait for me."
"Why does your company keep making you work so late? Can your body handle this? I’ve told you I can work and earn money too..."
"This is non-negotiable. I’m already in touch with the school for you; you’ll be able to start classes in a few days!" There was no room for discussion on this matter.
Qiao Chen mumbled a few words on the other end before finally hanging up with a sigh.
Jono put down the phone and sighed lightly herself. In truth, she hadn’t managed to get Qiao Chen into school at all. How could a senior high school student easily enroll in a public school? Right now, she didn’t have the money for private school either, and the parents of the classmate who had beaten Qiao Chen were adamant about pressing charges, insisting that since he was already eighteen, he must face legal consequences.
Hearing this made Jono want to slap that classmate's mother. Of course, these were just thoughts; if she really did hit her, they might end up being sued together as siblings.
"Here." Suddenly, a box was handed in front of Jono, pulling her back from her thoughts.
"Huh?" Jono looked up at Jin Chengyan, who was still dressed in his suit and seemed to have no intention of staying.
Jono noticed that Jin Chengyan had no intention of continuing the conversation. He simply placed the box on Jono's lap and sat down on the sofa beside her. "That day when I threw your phone away, consider this my apology."
Jono recalled her phone being tossed into the toilet, a pang of sadness hitting her. But soon, she remembered why her phone ended up there in the first place.
She stole a glance at Jin Chengyan, who was sitting diagonally across from her. Although it was just a fleeting moment that day, she couldn't help but notice how incredibly... well-built he was.
"If you want to look, just look openly. Sneaking glances isn't comfortable, is it?" He caught her off guard.
Jono immediately lowered her head in embarrassment, focusing on the box in her lap.
"Haha," Jin Chengyan chuckled. He seemed particularly amused by teasing Jono; seeing her flustered made him genuinely happy.
Jono shifted her attention to the box. It was a simple packaging at first glance, but when she opened it, she was left speechless.
It wasn't that Jono had never seen anything luxurious before; it was just that the phone Jin Chengyan gave her was an Apple, which many young people used nowadays. However, what set it apart was the ring of... crystals? No, diamonds!
It truly dazzled Jono's eyes.
With a hint of hopefulness, she said, "This crystal case is really shiny, but it's just too flashy for me..."
Jin Chengyan didn't contradict her. "I heard girls like shiny things like this, but I think giving just one or two isn't very sincere. I've already put the SIM card in for you; my personal number is set as the first speed dial, so you can reach me anytime."
Why did he set his number as the first speed dial? Why did he put the card in? How did he even get that card?
"You took the phone out of the toilet..." This was the only way Jono could think of for Jin Chengyan to get that card.
In that moment, Jin Chengyan's expression was slightly delayed, an experience he had never encountered before.
Then he said, "Jono, it's really hard for a normal person to keep up with your train of thought."
Jono: "..." She had just thought of it so naturally...
"Come here, I'll apply some medicine for you." He fixed his gaze on the reddened area of her face and quickly changed the subject.
