Regarding how Jin Chengyan applied medicine to Jono's face later, her consciousness was hazy. The only thing she could remember was his warm hand resting on her cheek, gently rubbing over her skin, leaving a sensation that was both cool and fiery.
In the end, she almost fled back to her guest room in a panic.
That night, Jono couldn't sleep. On the comfortable bed that he hadn't enjoyed in a long time, he tossed and turned all night without rest.
In the morning, he woke up with panda eyes as Jin Chengyan drove him to the small apartment building where she was temporarily staying.
Just as he was about to get out of the car, he saw Qiao Chen coming down from the building. Still wearing the uniform of that private high school, he looked noticeably thinner.
Jono hesitated to get out, afraid that Qiao Chen would see him.
Jin Chengyan noticed Jono's gaze and also saw Qiao Chen.
"Jono, I don't have much time to give you," Jin Chengyan said in a calm, businesslike tone that made Jono feel uncomfortable.
Was marriage just a business deal for him?
She remained silent, watching Qiao Chen's figure.
He stood in front of a breakfast stall downstairs, pulling out money from his pocket as if to pay. However, he withdrew the money instead, leaving without saying anything.
Seeing Qiao Chen like this, Jono's heart was tightly pulled.
She knew that Qiao Chen had a big appetite, especially since he was still growing. Yet, at the last moment, he had withdrawn the money because they were broke, not even having enough to buy breakfast.
"If you were alone, you could easily refuse my offer and find a job to support yourself. But you have a seriously ill father in the hospital, a younger brother who is still in school, and endless troubles...
"I can help you solve all of these, and all you need to do is play the role of my wife. There is no love between us, and you don’t have to apply your notions of love to me.
"Jono, you can think of this as a partnership; all you are contributing is four years of your youth."
Jono pulled her gaze back from Qiao Chen's increasingly distant figure and looked at the man sitting in the driver's seat—the one who had rescued her from that group of thugs yesterday, almost like a deity.
"Could it be..."
"No, Jono. I cannot help you for no reason." He seemed to know what she was about to say and interrupted her.
Jono's voice fell silent. Yes, she wanted to ask Jin Chengyan why he couldn’t help her every day, even though it felt shameless and greedy.
But after experiencing another person's selfless help, there was always a lingering sense of dependence.
"I am a businessman; I never make unprofitable deals." His voice and expression were all businesslike.
Suddenly, Jono understood. "You helped me multiple times because you wanted me to agree to your marriage proposal; it wasn’t out of kindness, was it?" Even though she was already sure, she still wanted to hear his denial.
But the response to Jono was the silence of Jin Chengyan.
Silence was an acknowledgment; Jin Chengyan's help was not given wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return, but rather a preparation for her agreement to his marriage proposal.
Jono laughed at herself, wondering why she was so foolish to think that Jin Chengyan's assistance came from genuine goodwill.
This was Jin Chengyan, after all—someone who never engaged in a losing deal. If he had set his sights on something, he would find a way to achieve it, regardless of the means he had to employ.
Jono said nothing, opened the car door, and quickly left the place.
In that moment, she felt as if she did not truly know Jin Chengyan.
