Jin Chengyan's hand slipped off Ruan Shengyu's shoulder, his gaze growing increasingly distant until he finally let out a light laugh.
He stood up, putting some space between them.
"Why can't I like someone else?" Jin Chengyan said coldly.
He could be gentle with her, but he wouldn't let her manipulate him endlessly.
In that moment of indifference, Ruan Shengyu felt as if the tenderness from before had vanished entirely. The words she had almost spoken were swallowed back down; she wanted to say: You can only like me.
But this was Jin Chengyan!
Seeing that she had nothing to say, Jin Chengyan found himself feeling ridiculous in the face of their relationship. "Yan San has returned."
Upon hearing those two words, Ruan Shengyu's unadorned face immediately tensed up. She looked at Jin Chengyan and asked in disbelief, "What do you mean?"
"He came back single this time. You have a chance now."
"Ayan... I..." It was undeniable that Ruan Shengyu felt a whirlwind of emotions at the news of Yan San's return, but looking at Jin Chengyan only made those complicated feelings more chaotic.
Jin Chengyan didn't want to get entangled with Ruan Shengyu over the topic of Yan San. From initial concern to now feeling suppressed, he thought it was absurd for him to suffer for no reason.
"Take care of yourself. I won't come back again, so the reporters don't catch us," Jin Chengyan said as he left a business card and exited the room.
Ruan Shengyu stared at the beige card on the bedside table, its simple yet elegant design clearly displaying three words—Yan Beiting.
The Third Young Master of the Yan Family, a wound in Ruan Shengyu's heart that would never heal.
She picked up the card and clutched it tightly in her hand.
Jin Chengyan emerged from Ruan Shengyu's room with a grim expression that even A-Shan found intimidating, let alone Xu Lin.
He left without saying a word, and A-Shan immediately followed him.
He kicked the driver out of the car, and A-Shan, risking it all, jumped into the passenger seat. Before she could fasten her seatbelt, Jin Chengyan sped off like a bullet.
"How's the investigation into last night's incident going? Who came up with the idea, who acted on it? I want every detail uncovered, and I won't let anyone off the hook!" Jin Chengyan's grip on the steering wheel was so tight that his knuckles turned white.
"The two people who bumped into Miss Ruan have already been brought out from the police station. It's up to you how to handle them. As for those pulling strings behind the scenes..." A-Shan paused slightly at this point.
The road conditions in Qin Cheng didn't allow Jin Chengyan to drive fast, forcing him to maintain a normal speed, which did nothing to alleviate his anger.
Moreover, A-Shan's hesitation only added to his frustration.
"Stop wasting time and speak!" he snapped, his patience wearing thin.
At that moment, Jin Chengyan's phone rang. Irritated, he pulled it out to see Yan San's name flashing on the screen—an unwelcome sight.
A-Shan noticed who was calling and immediately fell silent.
Jin Chengyan answered the call.
"Ayan, I'm back. Let's meet up!" Yan Beiting's voice was clean yet carried a hint of laziness.
When Jin Chengyan had once asked the women around him what made their Yan San so charming, they had replied that despite his seemingly indifferent demeanor towards everyone, it was precisely that attitude and appearance that attracted women the most.
Jin Chengyan scoffed at this.
Yan Beiting was nothing but a complete hypocrite, indifferent to everyone. That person was simply heartless.
"I'm busy, go find Alice to schedule a time," Jin Chengyan said, filled with anger. Seeing Yan Beiting only made him more furious.
"You have time to meet women, but not me?"
"I'll have time to see you when you turn into a woman!" After saying that, Jin Chengyan hung up the phone and tossed it onto the back seat, out of sight and out of mind.
This annoyance even made him forget to ask about what A-Shan had mentioned earlier.
