The father nodded, but his gaze at Jono was distant, filled with so many words he wished to say. Yet, his weary body betrayed him, leaving him unable to utter a single word. He could only look at her, as if every glance was a precious gift.
He wanted to tell her to live well with Qiao Chen, that even if the family went bankrupt, it didn’t matter; money was just an external thing. What truly mattered was happiness!
He also wanted to say that she must never be sad over a man; it wasn’t worth it. She would eventually meet a man who loved her like life itself. Just wait a little longer; there was no need to rush.
But those words remained unspoken. He was too exhausted. After waiting since morning, he finally saw his daughter and called her Little Glutinous Rice.
In a daze, he felt as if he could see his wife, who had left many years ago, waiting for him at the end of the hospital room.
After all these years, could he finally go and grow old with her?
“Dad—” Jono watched as her father closed his eyes. His hand slowly loosened from hers and slipped away. “Dad, Qiao Chen hasn’t arrived yet. Please wait a little longer; he’ll be here soon… really soon…”
Dad, Qiao Chen is coming! How sad would it be if he didn’t get to see you one last time?
Do you know how guilty Qiao Chen feels for causing Mom’s death with his birth? Now he won’t even get to see you one last time—what will he do?
Dad, please wait for Qiao Chen…
Tears streamed down Jono’s face like a broken dam. She wanted to cry out, but when she opened her mouth, no sound came forth. She could no longer make a sound! All she could do was watch her father slip away from her, feeling his body grow colder and colder, helpless to do anything.
Huo Yawen stood behind Jono, feeling utterly helpless. She couldn't ease her pain, nor could she bring herself to pull her away from their father.
“Dad—”
The hospital door swung open, and Qiao Chen rushed in. All he saw were his father’s closed eyes and his sister’s silent tears.
“Jono, what happened to Dad? He’s just sleeping, right?” Qiao Chen, like Jono moments before, could not accept the reality of their father's passing.
Jono's heart ached as she looked at her bewildered brother. In this moment, they had only each other; they were the closest family left in the world.
“Xiao Chen…” Jono grasped Qiao Chen's arm and felt him trembling. Here was a boy on the brink of adulthood, shaking as if he might collapse at any moment.
“Jono…” Qiao Chen's gaze remained fixed on their father. He couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just a cruel joke; surely he would wake up. He had to.
“Jono, Qiao Chen, my condolences.” Huo Yawen placed a hand on Jono's shoulder to offer her strength. “Leave the funeral arrangements to me. You both need to rest.”
Huo Yawen couldn't bear to see Jono, a young girl, tasked with handling her father's affairs. It would be yet another blow for her.
“What funeral? Dad can still be saved! Get out—” Qiao Chen shoved Huo Yawen away, his youthful defiance refusing to accept the finality of their father's death.
“Qiao Chen, you can't treat Dr. Huo like this!” Jono understood her brother's denial but knew this was not the time for his rebellion.
“Are you going to join them in saying Dad is gone? That’s not true! He hasn’t left us! You all need to go! Just leave!” With that, Qiao Chen began pushing both Huo Yawen and Jono toward the door.
Qiao Chen's strength was not to be underestimated; he managed to push both of them out and finally locked the hospital room door.
Qiao Chen looked at Jono with unfamiliar eyes. In just a glance, he turned and walked toward his father in the hospital bed.
Jono panicked, fearing that Qiao Chen might do something reckless!
"Qiao Chen, open the door! Come out! Qiao Chen!" Jono shouted as he desperately pounded on the door.
Huo Yawen immediately went to look for a spare key.
Jin Chengyan, who had just come out of another room, saw Jono in such a state and approached to check what was happening. He pulled Jono aside.
"What are you doing?" Jono exclaimed!
"Kick the door down!" was the blunt response.
