“Can we not let those relatives come to Dad's funeral? I don't like it,” Qiao Chen said as she and Jono arrived at the funeral home.
The burial plot was shared with their mother; otherwise, Jono wouldn't have had enough money to buy one.
When Qiao Chen mentioned not wanting the relatives to come, Jono felt the same way.
When their family was wealthy, those relatives would come around asking to borrow money, but they never paid it back.
Their father always said that since they were relatives and the family was doing well, they should help them out.
However, when the family went bankrupt, those relatives seemed to vanish. None of them visited when their father was hospitalized, let alone offered Jono any financial help when she was in dire straits.
“If you say you don’t want them here, then we won’t let them come.”
“Sis, weren’t you really close with Dr. Huo? You seemed so warm with him!” Qiao Chen remarked, truly a mischievous child.
“When we lived in the old district, he was our neighbor. You could say he was like an older brother!”
In truth, she wished she had an older brother so she wouldn’t have to bear all these burdens alone.
“Then tell me about your childhood. We have to stay here for a night; if you don’t share something, I might fall asleep quickly.”
Jono glanced at Qiao Chen and realized that he truly had nothing to say. Perhaps he hoped something would happen to divert his attention.
"Alright, then I'll tell you about it..." Jono began to share stories about his childhood with Huo Yawen. Although his memories were hazy, with a bit of embellishment, they still painted a beautiful picture of his past.
Eventually, Qiao Chen couldn't resist the drowsiness any longer and fell asleep beside Jono.
Jono draped a blanket over Qiao Chen. In the quiet funeral home, it was just the two of them, along with his father lying in the coffin.
No relatives came to pay their respects, and no old friends reached out to inquire.
Indeed, it was in times of hardship that one could discern true friends from mere acquaintances.
However, he did not expect Shen Fengye to arrive at that moment. Jono's expression instantly stiffened as he stood up and walked over to usher Shen Fengye out of the hall.
Jono closed the hall door behind him, ensuring that Qiao Chen remained unaware of anything amiss.
"Jono, I just came to see your father. Bringing a bouquet of flowers isn't too much to ask, is it?" Shen Fengye held a bouquet of white roses in her hand.
"Your absence would be best; my dad doesn't need you here!"
It was Shen Fengye's infidelity that had led to a series of events, and most importantly, she had kept that from Qiao Chen. Otherwise, this young brother who was fiercely protective of his sister might have done something reckless!
"Stop being unreasonable! Here’s one hundred thousand. It’s what I borrowed from you back then. Recently, Ni Yue has been too strict, and I couldn’t come up with the money. You too—caught in the crossfire. If you come to me privately, I’ll definitely give you the money!"
“Privately?” Jono exclaimed, exasperated. “You’re with Ni Yue, and you still want me to meet you in secret? Can you be any more shameless?”
It seemed that Shen Fengye was managing his double life quite smoothly.
“Don’t make it sound so harsh! Don’t think I don’t know about your ambiguous relationship with that Jin Chengyan. Instead of seeking out a stranger, why not come to me…”
“Get lost!” She was furious and yanked the white rose from Shen Fengye’s arms, throwing it at him!
Shen Fengye fled, but Jono remained stunned for a while. After a long moment, she gathered her thoughts and opened the door to the hall. Fortunately, Qiao Chen was still deep in slumber.
