"Is there any work arranged for Shengyu today?" Jin Chengyan asked, sitting in the back seat with a blank expression as he called Xu Lin.
"She just finished her schedule and has nothing to do this afternoon."
"Okay, I'll go find her." To avoid running into Yan Beiting like last time when he went to see Ruan Shengyu, he decided to call ahead this time.
He could only describe his behavior as self-punishment.
After hanging up, Jin Chengyan pondered for a moment before saying to A-Shan, "A-Shan, go to the police station and clear up that case involving Jono. Don't leave a record."
A-Shan nodded without surprise. Although he sensed that his young master was in a bit of a bad mood today, the fact that he was willing to clear Jono's case indicated that there were no issues between them.
Twenty minutes later, the car stopped downstairs at Ruan Shengyu's home. Jin Chengyan got out discreetly and went inside.
As soon as he entered, he was hit by the smell of traditional Chinese medicine. Jin Chengyan frowned; he hadn't heard that Ruan Shengyu was unwell...
"Shengyu, are you sick?" Jin Chengyan asked, looking at Ruan Shengyu, who had just set down her bowl. She appeared slightly troubled after drinking the herbal medicine; it must have been bitter.
"It's nothing, just feeling a bit weak. Xu Jie said drinking herbal medicine is better."
"Oh..." So that's how it is; Jin Chengyan felt relieved.
He walked over and sat beside Ruan Shengyu, unwrapping some candy from the table and handing it to her.
"Shengyu, I've sent A-Shan to clear up that case. It's all taken care of."
Ruan Shengyu took the candy from Jin Chengyan and ate it but didn't quite understand his statement.
"What case did you clear?" she asked, then slowly began to realize, "Oh, how did you resolve it?"
Before, Yan Beiting had told her not to go after Jono anymore, and now Jin Chengyan said he had already sent A-Shan to settle the matter. It was truly amusing how these two men were willing to hurt her for Jono!
Jin Chengyan fell silent for a moment before saying, "If she hurt you, I will return it double."
Ruan Shengyu looked at Jin Chengyan's handsome profile. She had always thought he was very attractive, even more so than Yan Beiting. However, there was nothing she could do; she had liked Yan Beiting first. For so many years, he had been a thorn in her heart—impossible to forget and impossible to remove.
"Double? Are you saying you found someone to violate Jono?" Ruan Shengyu chuckled lightly. She believed that someone with Jin Chengyan's character would never do such a thing.
In fact, she hadn’t initially thought of having other men harm Jono; it was all Ni Yue's idea. It seemed that women truly should not offend other women; they could resort to the most vicious tactics.
But seeing the coldness in Jin Chengyan's profile, Ruan Shengyu realized she might have guessed correctly!
Jin Chengyan really did find someone to violate Jono!
"Ayan!" Ruan Shengyu exclaimed in shock. Did Jin Chengyan really go that far?!
"I told you before that I wouldn't let anyone hurt you, not even Yan San." The promise from years ago was long forgotten by Ruan Shengyu, yet Jin Chengyan was still fulfilling it!
In an instant, Ruan Shengyu didn’t know what to say—was it moved? Grateful? Or sad?
"Alright, you rest well. I need to head to the office," Jin Chengyan said as he squeezed Ruan Shengyu's hand.
Ruan Shengyu was at a loss for words and could only nod. She still hadn’t fully processed the fact that Jin Chengyan had sent someone to harm Jono!
Soon, the large living room was left with just her alone; Jin Chengyan had left.
Yet in her ears lingered another phrase—if you dare to harm Jono even a little, I will make you pay double!
The one who said this was Yan Beiting!
Jono felt completely dazed, Jin Chengyan's words echoing in her mind. Their entanglement had been nothing more than a means to ruin her innocence, merely a way to take revenge for Ruan Shengyu!
But what about her? She had not only given her heart but also her body!
In the end, she even had to pretend that Jin Chengyan's skills were lacking, while he had ruined her purity!
That bastard, Jin Chengyan, that big liar!
A piercing honk suddenly broke through Jono's thoughts. She looked around for the source of the noise and soon spotted a man in a blue striped shirt approaching.
Yan Beiting.
Before Jono could say anything, Yan Beiting pulled her into his embrace tightly!
Jono's eyes widened. What was going on with him?
However, his grip quickly loosened, and he looked at Jono with concern.
"I heard you were taken to the police station. Are you okay now? Why didn’t you call me? Do you know how worried I was when I heard you were taken away? How did you get picked up afterward?" Yan Beiting bombarded her with questions, leaving Jono momentarily speechless.
"I... can you let go of me? It hurts." Yan Beiting's grip on her arm was quite strong, and when did he start worrying about her so much?
Realizing he was being too rough, Yan Beiting immediately released Jono.
But his concern was genuine. No matter what happened yesterday, the police refused to disclose who had taken Jono. There weren't many people with such influence in Qin Cheng, yet Yan Beiting couldn't find a suitable reason to seek out Jono.
"It's nothing serious; I'm perfectly fine," Jono shrugged. Aside from what happened with Jin Chengyan yesterday, everything else was just fine.
However, Yan Beiting did not think so. He looked at Jono, who was clearly putting on a brave face, but if he continued to ask, Jono would definitely not respond.
If there was anything to blame, it was that his relationship with Jono was merely that of ordinary friends.
"Forget it. Where are you headed? I'll give you a ride," Yan Beiting said, filled with endless worries. He truly didn't know how to approach Jono, fearing that being too enthusiastic might scare her away.
He was also afraid that if he showed no signs of affection, she might not feel anything at all.
"No need, I can go by myself," Jono replied, unsure why Yan Beiting was being so enthusiastic towards her. Perhaps he was just a helpful person?
Yet Yan Beiting seemed determined to insist on seeing her off!
At that moment, Jono's phone rang; it was a call from the police station.
It was a call she had to take. She gestured an apology to Yan Beiting and stepped aside to answer the phone.
"Is this Miss Qiao? This is the police station. The party involved in your case has withdrawn the complaint. You can come to the station to sign some papers when you have time, and we won't trouble you again!"
Jono listened in surprise to the officer's voice. Was this a joke?
Jin Chengyan had gone so far as to ruin two people's reputations for the sake of revenge against Ruan Shengyu and destroy Jono in the process. Yet now the party involved had withdrawn the complaint?
Did they really think it could be resolved privately?
"Okay, I understand," Jono said as she hung up the phone, taking a deep breath.
Standing behind Jono, Yan Beiting unexpectedly noticed something resembling a hickey on her neck. Unable to resist, he stepped forward and brushed aside Jono's tied-up hair. In an instant, those marks were clearly visible in Yan Beiting's eyes.
Feeling someone touching her hair, Jono instinctively turned around and looked at Yan Beiting warily.
She placed her hand on the back of her neck, feeling the spot that Yan Beiting had just touched, and suddenly realized it was the mark left by Jin Chengyan's relentless pursuit last night!
Her face instantly flushed.
"You..." Yan Beiting's mind exploded with thoughts! "What did Jin Chengyan do to you?"
He had warned Ruan Shengyu that if they dared to harm Jono in any way, he would not hold back! If Jin Chengyan dared to hurt Jono for the sake of Ruan Shengyu, he would not care about their brotherhood!
Jono tightened her grip on her clothes; she truly had no idea what Yan Beiting was worrying about!
Did he think they were friends just because of the misunderstanding during their last blind date?
"My relationship with Jin Chengyan has nothing to do with you." When Jono spoke Jin Chengyan's name, she felt a pang of discomfort. Yes, giving her heart away only to be rejected—who wouldn't feel sad about that?
But how could this prevent Yan Beiting from jumping to conclusions? The marks on Jono's body, Jin Chengyan's almost obsessive care for Ruan Shengyu! And yet, Jono was so resistant to his concern!
"Jono, I really am worried about you! Don’t shut me out." Yan Beiting felt it wasn’t the right time to tell Jono that she was the girl who had captivated his heart for six years; she was too resistant to men! He feared making things worse.
"Thank you, but I don’t need anyone’s concern right now. I can handle things on my own!" With that, Jono left Yan Beiting behind and walked toward her small apartment.
This afternoon, Qiao Chen would be back from school, and she didn’t want him to find out anything!
But in her current state, how could she avoid raising any suspicions with Qiao Chen?
She went to the supermarket and bought some of the dishes that Qiao Chen usually liked; he probably hadn’t eaten well at school! She wondered how he was doing academically and whether he could get into college!
Thinking about these things made Jono completely forget about that person, Jin Chengyan!
It was truly laughable; if he wanted to ruin her, why did he have to get personally involved? He could easily find someone else to do it!
So, somewhere in Jin Chengyan's heart, he still couldn't bear to hurt her, right?
Jono dared not think too much about it, fearing that he might find a reason to forgive Jin Chengyan.
After buying groceries and returning to the small apartment, Jono prepared a meal for Qiao Chen. Checking the time, he realized Qiao Chen should have been back by now. Just as he was about to call Qiao Chen, he finally returned.
Qiao Chen was wearing a hoodie with the hood up, looking like a typical young man trying to act cool.
"Qiao Chen, why are you still wearing your hood at home? Go wash your hands and come eat!" Seeing Qiao Chen lifted Jono's spirits a bit.
However, Qiao Chen seemed to deliberately avoid Jono. "I'm not hungry. I'm so tired from class; I'm going to take a nap."
Jono felt something was off. He quickly got up from his chair and walked over to Qiao Chen, pulling off his hood. Sure enough, he saw a bruise on his face.
"You got into another fight?"
