In a dark, enclosed space, Jono felt herself bound to a chair. No matter how hard she tried to open her eyes, the darkness around her was impenetrable.
"Help..." she called out, but all she could sense was the sound of her own voice; she couldn't hear it.
An overwhelming sense of panic surged within her, filling her with a foreboding feeling!
Suddenly, two beams of light pierced through the darkness, and the intense brightness was blinding. She shut her eyes tightly, and when she finally opened them again, she discovered that there were two people in this small space.
Another woman was also tied to a chair!
The woman looked at Jono with a surprised expression, as if they knew each other.
Should she recognize this woman? But she had lost her memory; even her name had been told to her by Jin Chengyan. How could she remember anyone else?
The woman began to speak, but Jono couldn't hear her.
In this place illuminated only by two beams of light, Jono felt an intense unease. She wanted to escape!
She struggled against her bindings, and to her astonishment, the ropes on her hands came loose!
She didn't know why she felt compelled to save the woman tied to the chair, but once she freed her, a sudden opening appeared somewhere in the room, and sunlight streamed in from outside!
She could get out!
A wave of joy surged within her as she ran toward the light!
Just as she thought she was about to successfully escape this place, a heavy blow struck her head!
She turned around in shock and saw the woman she had just rescued holding a brick, swinging it towards her head! That woman!
It was Ruan Shengyu!
"Ah—" A scream escaped Jono's lips, jolting her awake as she shot up from the bed!
The hospital in the early morning was eerily quiet, and Jono's scream shattered the silence, only for the room to fall back into stillness afterward.
Jin Chengyan, who had been leaning against the bedside, was immediately startled awake by Jono's cry. He turned on the light and looked at her with concern.
"What happened? Did you have a nightmare?" Seeing the sweat on Jono's face and her reaction, Jin Chengyan guessed what might have occurred.
Jono looked at Jin Chengyan in a bit of a daze, instinctively nodding her head.
Jin Chengyan took a tissue to wipe the sweat from her forehead and then went to the bathroom to fetch a warm towel to clean her face.
By the time Jin Chengyan finished these tasks, Jono still seemed lost in thought, sitting there blankly on the bed.
"Are you feeling unwell? Should I call a doctor?" As he spoke, Jin Chengyan reached for the bell to summon medical help.
Since Jin Chengyan had brought Jono to this hospital last night, all doctors related to neurology were required to be on standby, just in case something happened to her.
But Jono grabbed Jin Chengyan's shirt. "No need..."
Her voice was faint, and her complexion pale. How could she expect Jin Chengyan not to worry?
"Your complexion looks terrible. I won't feel at ease until a doctor comes," Jin Chengyan expressed his deep concern for Jono.
"I said it's unnecessary!" Jono retorted, her tone firm as she met his gaze. She showed no signs of weakness, even appearing somewhat assertive.
Jin Chengyan withdrew his hand, looking at Jono as he placed his palm against her cheek. Her skin felt cool, despite the air conditioning running in the room.
"Are you angry with me for locking Qiao Chen in Jin Mansion and causing him to get hurt?" This was likely the reason for Jono's anger. Even without memories, Qiao Chen was her younger brother. How could she not worry or be upset when he was injured?
Jono remained silent, simply staring at Jin Chengyan. The more she maintained that expression, the more Jin Chengyan felt uncertain about what she was thinking.
"I brought Qiao Chen to Jin Mansion because you suddenly disappeared. You know there was an issue at the Jin Family resort that day, and I had to rush over to handle it. Someone deliberately set me up, and by the time I got home, they said you were missing."
That day, Jono had indeed asked Jasper to help her leave Jin Mansion, but she had no idea Jasper had set a trap for Jin Chengyan!
However, if Jasper hadn't set a trap for Jin Chengyan, he wouldn't have returned to Jin Mansion so late in the afternoon after spending so much time searching for Jono.
"Qiao Chen is your brother. I thought even if you were leaving, you'd want to find him first, so I found Qiao Chen and brought him home. I thought you would come back." But she didn't; instead, Jono went directly to C City, accompanied by Yan Beiting.
Jono surely didn't know how furious Jin Chengyan felt when he saw her standing next to Yan Beiting. He wished those twenty-some helicopters could transform into fighter jets and bomb Yan Beiting's private plane.
Perhaps in the past, he might have been annoyed with Yan Beiting due to personal grievances. But now, Jin Chengyan understood that it was because he cared for Jono and liked her; he couldn't bear to see her with Yan Beiting.
"I'm very sorry about Qiao Chen. I've already asked A-Shan to find the best doctor for his treatment. He won't have any lasting effects, I promise you. I will never harm Qiao Chen again," Jin Chengyan earnestly explained, his sincere gaze affecting Jono.
Jono remained silent, not giving Jin Chengyan a response. This made him anxious; whether it was forgiveness or not, she needed to give him an answer. What did this silence mean?
“Jono?”
Jono snapped back to reality, looking at Jin Chengyan with a hint of unfamiliarity in his eyes.
“It’s nothing… I just… had a nightmare and haven’t… recovered yet.” Jono's tone gradually softened as he looked at Jin Chengyan, his expression becoming gentler, reminiscent of the way he had regarded Jin Chengyan as the only family he had in this world.
Seeing Jono like this, Jin Chengyan felt a bit more at ease.
“Should I call a doctor to check on you?”
“I don’t want to. I’m a bit tired; let’s talk about it when the sun comes up.” Jono slowly lay down, but in the warm bed, he felt no warmth at all, only a chilling emptiness that pierced his heart.
Jono turned his back to Jin Chengyan, unable to close his eyes, his mind in turmoil.
It wasn’t until Jin Chengyan lay beside Jono, gently wrapping him in his arms, that Jono felt the warmth of his chest against his back, just like every other night when Jin Chengyan held him to sleep.
But this time felt different.
The one who hit him was Ruan Shengyu, yet Jin Chengyan hadn’t done anything about it!
What kind of bottom line did he have regarding Ruan Shengyu? Was it enough that she didn’t kill or set fire to anything for him to indulge her?
…
Qiao Chen was at the hospital where Huo Yawen was located. When he was being loaded onto the ambulance, he insisted that the medical staff take him to Huo Yawen’s hospital; otherwise, he would rather jump out of the vehicle!
For a patient so persistent, the medical staff had no choice but to send Qiao Chen over there.
However, the doctors treating Qiao Chen were all experts, and in the end, it was just a dislocated shoulder.
After being closely monitored for a day, Jono changed into his own clothes and confidently walked out of the ward.
At the entrance stood two bodyguards from the Jin Family, who politely extended their hands to block Qiao Chen's path.
"Young Master Qiao Chen, please return to your room. Don't make things difficult for us!" They had arranged for Qiao Chen to have a room with iron bars on the windows; there was no way out except through the main door!
Qiao Chen didn't understand why Jin Chengyan had trapped him, but he figured it must have something to do with his sister! The thought that Jono couldn't even remember him made him want to tear Jin Chengyan apart.
"The room is too stuffy; I need to go for a walk!" Qiao Chen insisted as he moved forward.
The two bodyguards had already received instructions from A-Shan not to physically stop Qiao Chen. This young master had quite a temper, and if they restrained him and something went wrong, their own young master would truly be furious!
So when Qiao Chen swaggered out, the two bodyguards could only quietly follow behind him.
He meandered around, first taking a stroll in the garden, then wandering through the outpatient and emergency departments, finally arriving at Neurosurgery. As he peeked around, Huo Yawen happened to come out of the operating room.
Qiao Chen desperately gestured toward Huo Yawen. Seeing the two bodyguards behind Qiao Chen, Huo Yawen didn't understand what was going on but realized that Qiao Chen was in a difficult situation.
He nodded slightly to indicate that he understood.
Afterward, Qiao Chen returned to the garden and sat on a bench like an old man in his seventies, basking in the sun.
Before long, Huo Yawen emerged. As he approached Qiao Chen, the two bodyguards grew suspicious. However, seeing him in a white lab coat, looking scholarly, and noticing that he merely sat down and smoked without any other actions, they allowed Huo Yawen to remain there.
Huo Yawen glanced at the two bodyguards, then pulled out a cigarette and offered it to Qiao Chen.
Qiao Chen was momentarily taken aback but accepted the cigarette without lighting it.
"Why is someone following you?" Huo Yawen also left his cigarette unlit. From a distance, it appeared as if one was borrowing a cigarette from the other, nothing unusual.
"Jin Chengyan sent someone to follow me. I suspect something has happened to my sister. I can't leave right now; can you help me look into it? I'm worried something might have happened to her." Qiao Chen was deeply anxious; he couldn't even reach his sister on the phone and had no idea how to contact her!
Ever since Jono mentioned that she was with Jin Chengyan, she had become mysterious and stopped sharing her thoughts with him, which made Qiao Chen feel quite uncomfortable.
If it weren't for his studies, he would want to follow his sister every day to ensure her safety!
"I haven't contacted Jono in a while, but hearing you say this, I'll go find her." If Jin Chengyan dared to harm her, Huo Yawen would risk everything to rescue Jono!
Of course, Huo Yawen didn't voice this thought; there was no need for Qiao Chen or Jono to know these things.
He quietly cared for and protected Jono, and that was enough for him.
Qiao Chen handed the cigarette back to Huo Yawen. The two acted as if they were strangers and walked in opposite directions.
Qiao Chen was truly furious with Jin Chengyan. Being trapped in Jin Mansion without explanation was infuriating enough; now he was stuck in a hospital. Just thinking about it filled him with rage.
He shouted at the two bodyguards, "Give me Jin Chengyan's phone number! What do you think this is, keeping me trapped here?"
The two bodyguards exchanged glances, realizing just how tempestuous the young master’s temperament was. Just moments ago, he had been smoking with a doctor, and now he was demanding Jin Chengyan's phone number?
Yet, they couldn't ignore the young master's request. After one of them made a call to A-Shan, it wasn't long before Jin Chengyan's phone rang directly.
Before the bodyguards could say anything, Qiao Chen snatched the phone!
“Jin Chengyan, you bastard! Where have you taken my sister? If she loses even a single hair or gets hurt in any way, I swear I will make you pay dearly!” Qiao Chen's voice was powerful and resolute, showing no signs of being a victim.
The two bodyguards were utterly stunned; no one had ever dared to speak to Jin Chengyan with such ferocity. This young master’s brother-in-law was truly formidable!
However, Qiao Chen didn’t hear any response from the other end—only silence.
“Jin Chengyan, you coward! If you have the guts, come face me right now! Let’s see if I don’t take you down!”
The bodyguards could only stare in disbelief.
“Qiao Chen, it’s me.” Jono's voice came through, choked with emotion.
At just eighteen years old, Qiao Chen had little experience with the world and was unaware of its dangers. Yet he possessed a heart full of innocence and determination to protect his sister, regardless of how powerful the opponent might be.
Hearing Jono's voice calmed Qiao Chen completely. From his earlier fury to this moment of excitement—Jono was safe!
“Sis, is that really you? Are you okay? Jin Chengyan hasn’t done anything to you, has he? Where are you? I’ll come find you right now!”
Qiao Chen transformed from an angry young man into someone filled with urgency and concern, leaving the two bodyguards utterly speechless.
"I'm fine, but what about you? Why did you climb over the wall? Do you think you're Sun Wukong, able to ride the clouds? If it gets any worse, your hand will be useless! How are you going to take the exam?" Jono said, feeling both heartbroken and upset.
But there were more words left unspoken because Jin Chengyan was beside her.
"Sis, I was wrong, but you have to tell me where you are. What exactly did that bastard Jin Chengyan do to you? Don't think I don't know that you were kidnapped before! I'm your brother; I have the right to know about these things!" The news among the wealthy circles was something he had picked up from his friends on WeChat. They didn't block him because they knew he was Jin Chengyan's brother-in-law.
From their posts, he had caught glimpses of their opinions on the matter. At that time, Jono had just been fine, and Qiao Chen didn't want to provoke her, so he had kept quiet.
But now, Qiao Chen couldn't hold back anymore.
"Just rest well. Once your hand is better, go back to school. I'm in C City for work; don't worry about it. When winter break comes, we'll go back to the apartment together!"
Jono didn't continue talking about the kidnapping; she skipped over that topic.
Qiao Chen wanted to say something else, but Jono didn't give him the chance.
She didn't hang up; instead, she turned to the person next to her and said, "I'm fine now and won't be leaving. Shouldn't you let Qiao Chen go back to school?"
Hearing Jono's words, Qiao Chen realized there was someone else with her—Jin Chengyan. Otherwise, why would Jono say those things?
"Just handle it as you see fit," Jin Chengyan said, now fully supporting Jono.
With Jin Chengyan's approval, Jono turned back to Qiao Chen on the phone and said, "Give the phone to your bodyguard. I'll talk to them so they won't follow you anymore. Once your hand is better, go back to school!"
After hanging up, Jono placed her phone on the blanket, feeling somewhat downcast.
"What happened? What did Qiao Chen say to you?" Jin Chengyan was worried about Jono. After A-Shan called him, he had Jono call Qiao Chen.
Unexpectedly, after the call, Jono's mood worsened.
Just a moment ago, Jin Chengyan, standing two meters away, heard Qiao Chen accusing him.
"Qiao Chen..." Jono thought for a moment. "He said you're a jerk for not telling him where I am."
Jin Chengyan: "..." Qiao Chen, you really dare to say that. Do you think I have no way to deal with you just because you're Qiao Chen's brother?
But the truth was that Jin Chengyan really couldn't do anything about Qiao Chen!
The identity of being Jono's brother made him avoid confrontation.
The power of a brother-in-law was formidable!
...
"Um, Jin Chengyan, you really don't have to stay with me in C City. I have my own work to do here," Jono said. She was discharged from the hospital the next day without any significant findings. It seemed she had just fainted from stress, but the blood clot in her head was showing signs of shrinking.
For the past two days, busy man Jin Chengyan stayed in C City with her. If Jono didn't go out, he wouldn't either; he worked on his laptop in the hotel and chatted with Jono whenever he had time.
At this point, it felt more like Jono was accompanying Jin Chengyan on a business trip!
In fact, it seemed that Jin Chengyan had even struck a deal with Nan Chen from C City and would be signing a contract after the New Year.
Jono's collaboration with Jasper had only just begun, and Jin Chengyan's speed was rather astonishing.
"When do you plan to go back? We've barely been married and already living apart; it's not good for our relationship," Jin Chengyan said seriously, now embodying the role of a devoted husband.
Jono couldn't help but smile self-deprecatingly inside; he didn't let that expression show.
The main issue was that with Jin Chengyan around, Jono really couldn't focus on his own matters!
"I'll go back before the New Year..." He had promised to spend the New Year with Qiao Chen.
"There's still over a month until the New Year. If you're only going back then, that means I won't see you for seven hundred twenty hours, forty-three thousand two hundred minutes, and two hundred fifty-nine million two thousand seconds. In every moment I can't see you, I'll be thinking of you. Just thinking about it now makes me feel unbearable."
Jono was speechless. His romantic skills were truly at MAX level. Was this how he always treated someone he liked, or had he learned it recently?
His heart skipped a beat.
Did even she feel that Jin Chengyan liked her now? Was it simply because he was always by her side?
Wasn't this... guilt?
"Are you thinking about being with me, or do you really miss me?" Jono asked directly, blinking her eyes.
Jin Chengyan raised an eyebrow; Jono's question was too blunt.
"Is there really a fundamental difference between wanting to be with you and missing you?"
"Isn't a man's love separated between spirit and flesh? When we are together, do you really think of me? When you love someone, perhaps you're thinking about being with me..."
Before Jono could finish, Jin Chengyan set down what he was holding and walked over to Jono. Her words had been too sharp today, as if she were deliberately trying to drive him away.
"My soul and flesh are right here; how do you want to feel them?" He placed Jono's hand on his left chest, where the strong beat of his heart resonated beneath her palm. In front of him was Jin Chengyan's sincere face, and the deep affection in his eyes did not escape Jono's notice.
"Then why not just do everything we need to for the next month ahead of time? With you here, I can't focus on work."
Jono leaned in closer, their noses almost touching, both of their breaths becoming slightly erratic at that moment.
Jin Chengyan wrapped his arms around Jono's waist, pulling her closer. His lips brushed against her earlobe.
"Is that enough? We do this every night."
Without waiting for Jin Chengyan's response, Jono took action to show him just what she meant!
She pushed him onto the sofa and sat on his lap, her long hair swept to one side, her natural blush evident on her unmade-up face.
Since they hadn't gone out, she wore Jin Chengyan's white shirt, the top three buttons undone. As she leaned forward, the black bra underneath was faintly visible, and with Jono's excellent figure, the hidden curves added an air of mystery.
Her long, fair legs wrapped around Jin Chengyan's waist!
This scene was practically a living invitation to sin!
Jin Chengyan felt a dryness in his throat; he wanted a drink but knew that only Jono could quench his thirst.
For two whole days, Jono and Jin Chengyan had not left the hotel. In the presidential suite, every conceivable spot bore their traces, as if the world was on the brink of destruction after these two days, leaving them no chance to return to normalcy.
The bed in the bedroom was just the beginning; the sofa in the living room, the dining table in the restaurant, the countertop by the refrigerator, and even the bathtub in the bathroom—all reminded Jono of how she and Jin Chengyan had shared intimate moments in each of those places.
But finally, Jono had seen Jin Chengyan off.
When he left that morning, Jono was still sore and nestled under the covers, her back fully exposed. Jin Chengyan had pressed down on her once more before departing, truly unable to get enough.
After a series of soft murmurs, it ended. Before leaving, Jin Chengyan gave her a kiss filled with deep emotion but devoid of any desire.
Jono mechanically responded.
Once Jin Chengyan was gone, Jono went back to sleep, not waking until three in the afternoon.
After soaking in a hot bath to ease her fatigue from two days without rest, she packed her clothes into her suitcase. Dragging it along, she made her way to the front desk and requested to change her accommodation from the presidential suite to a standard room.
"Mrs. Jin, Mr. Jin has already paid for a month in the suite," the receptionist said with a smile.
"Please switch me to a standard room and refund me the excess amount. Thank you," Jono replied firmly, leaving no room for negotiation.
The receptionist seemed taken aback; it was likely their first encounter with someone who would choose not to stay in a fully paid presidential suite in favor of a standard room.
However, the hotel’s standard rooms were well-equipped as expected of a five-star establishment.
Soon, Jono returned to the newly opened Standard Room with the difference in refund.
The Standard Room was indeed much less luxurious than the presidential suite; it lacked spaciousness, a sweeping city view, a kitchen, a gym, and more.
However, stepping out of that room meant Jono no longer had to think about the positions she had shared with Jin Chengyan every time she walked past.
She nestled into the single sofa and gazed out the window. Although there was no expansive cityscape, it still offered a moment of peace.
Half an hour later, Jono called Xining.
Twenty minutes later, Xining hurried over.
"Jono sis, are you really going to investigate that kidnapping case?" Xining asked excitedly. With nothing to do, she always loved to join in on the excitement.
Jono forced a bitter smile.
Jin Chengyan, oh Jin Chengyan, even if you want to lie, you should at least have someone cooperate with you. Look at this: you told me I lost my memory due to a car accident, and I believed you.
Even when I heard you say with your own mouth that I lost my memory because of injuries from a kidnapping, I had my doubts.
But now that Qiao Chen says it, and Xining says it, and you say it too—I can no longer trust you!
"This is what I found on Jin Chengyan's computer," Jono said as she turned her laptop toward Xining.
It was during Jin Chengyan's shower that she had secretly opened his computer and discovered something in a hidden encrypted file.
She tried the birthday of Ruan Shengyu, those six digits lingering in Jono's mind, but this time, it did not unlock!
Next, she used Jin Chengyan's own birthday, but it didn't work. Just as she was about to give up, she entered her own birthday, and to her surprise, it opened.
The encrypted file contained an identification report.
"Fingerprint report? What is this?" Xining could understand the English on the document was a fingerprint report, but she didn't grasp the significance of Jono showing her this report.
"The fingerprints belong to Ruan Shengyu, and they match the ones found on the brick that hit me in the factory."
Xining paused for a moment before realizing, "The person who attacked you was Ruan Shengyu!"
Jono nodded.
"But Jin Chengyan hid this report," Xining said in shock.
This was what made Jono feel a chill in his heart.
