Four Years Ago……
At that time, Jono was still Jin Chengyan's wife, and everything was under Jin Chengyan's control. The two of them were happily living in Jin Mansion.
One day, when Jin Chengyan returned to Jin Mansion, he did not find Jono in the living room. Thinking she had not yet come home, he went upstairs to his study to handle some business. By the time he looked up again, it was already late at night.
After taking a shower and changing his clothes, he prepared to go downstairs to cook something to eat. It was then that he realized he hadn’t heard any noise from downstairs. Was Jono still not back?
The clock had already struck eleven.
He opened Jono's bedroom door and turned on the light, discovering that she was lying on the bed. So she had returned after all.
However, the person on the bed was curled up into a small ball, her long hair covering her face, and it seemed to be damp with sweat.
“Jono?” Jin Chengyan walked over and brushed aside Jono's hair, only to find her expression unusually pained. She was clutching her lower abdomen. “What’s wrong? Why does it hurt so much? I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Could it be that Jono had been home for a while when he returned? How could she endure such pain for so long without saying anything? At this rate, wouldn’t she be in danger of severe pain?
“No… it’s fine.” Jono shook her head. The pain came in waves, and it was the kind of pain that women experience. Even if she went to the hospital, the doctor would just prescribe some painkillers. They might relieve it this time, but it would still hurt next time.
Unless she took care of her body from the very beginning.
“What do you mean you’re not going to the hospital? You could seriously hurt yourself!” As he spoke, Jin Chengyan moved to pick Jono up, not understanding why this woman was being so stubborn.
“Really, it’s fine! I just got my period!” Jono blurted out in a moment of panic when she saw that Jin Chengyan really intended to take her to the hospital. It felt so embarrassing.
Jin Chengyan’s hands froze for a moment; he felt somewhat… awkward.
The ever-smart Jin Chengyan never expected that Jono was in such pain because of her period.
"Oh..." He withdrew his hand, pretending to be calm. "But isn't this a bit... serious?"
"Maybe... I didn't rest well the past few days and ate something cold..." Jono thought, feeling unwell but not expecting the pain to be this severe this time.
"Oh... should I get you some painkillers?" It seemed like there were some in the house.
"No, just bring me some hot water, please."
"Oh..." Jin Chengyan could only respond with an "oh" to this request, as it was too awkward.
He stood up and walked outside, taking out his phone as he went. He opened a webpage and typed: What should men do when their girlfriend has menstrual cramps?
A search yielded a plethora of information, but the first thing that caught his eye was a warning: never tell your girlfriend that a cup of hot water will solve everything if you don't want to see her tear you apart!
Jin Chengyan paused for a moment, but just now, Jono had asked him for a cup of hot water...
And besides, he wasn't Jono's boyfriend; he was her husband.
He browsed carefully through the suggestions from various netizens—things like warming patches, heat packs, ginger tea... and it was advised not to take painkillers due to their significant side effects.
Originally planning to get Jono some painkillers, he put the ones he had already picked up back down.
However, they really didn't have a hot water bottle in Jin Mansion!
Jin Chengyan brought Jono a cup of warm water with honey added. He watched her lean against the bed's edge, lifting the cup but not drinking. She simply rested it against the warmth of the cup to soothe herself.
Once the temperature was suitable, Jono took a small sip and suddenly looked up. "You added honey; it's good."
Seeing Jono satisfied, Jin Chengyan nodded, feeling a sense of pride akin to being praised by his grandfather for coming first in class back in elementary school.
"But how did you know I wanted something sweet? It seems you know quite a bit!" Jono said, slightly coming back to her senses, teasing Jin Chengyan a little.
He glanced at her. "Does it still hurt?"
At Jin Chengyan's words, Jono realized that her lower abdomen was indeed in pain.
She nodded; menstrual cramps were worse than childbirth, something men could never understand.
"Lie down." He sat on the edge of the bed, took the cup from Jono's hands, and urged her to lie down.
Before Jono could fully comprehend what was happening, Jin Chengyan had already pressed her down onto the bed, forcing her to lie back, but she wanted to sit up for a moment.
Little did she know, Jin Chengyan had also reached into the cup! He lifted her T-shirt and slipped his hand underneath!
"Jin Chengyan!" Jono exclaimed. What was he doing? He wouldn't take advantage of her when she was weak, would he?
Could he have a little decency?
However, Jin Chengyan merely placed his hand on her lower abdomen. His palm was warm, and as it rested there, it miraculously eased her pain. Just as she thought about pushing him away, she found herself yielding to such tenderness.
Seeing that Jono had stopped squirming, Jin Chengyan finally released his grip on her shoulder.
"How do you know so much? You know I have menstrual cramps and made me honey water, and you also know to put something warm on my lower abdomen. Is it that... you do this for others too?"
"If you keep talking," Jin Chengyan threatened as he pretended to pull his hand away. Jono immediately grabbed his hand and placed it back on her abdomen.
"I was just saying it casually; don’t be angry. I’ll keep quiet, okay?" Jono obediently closed her mouth and, under Jin Chengyan's gentle caress, closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Jono held the cup containing a dark red, mysterious liquid, her thoughts gradually returning. It felt like a distant memory, but just a small spark could trigger the switch for a flood of memories to rush into her mind.
"I don't have menstrual pain." How could she possibly have menstrual pain while pregnant?
Jin Chengyan furrowed his brow slightly. What had she been doing just now, clutching her abdomen?
"Your complexion is terrible. Do you even take care of yourself? Stop making people worry, okay? Even though we're divorced, please take care of yourself!" He couldn't quite articulate the anger that surged within him, yet it felt entirely out of place.
After saying that, he found himself bewildered.
He immediately opened the car door and stood outside, leaning against the door.
He loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt. Taking a deep breath was the only way to calm his misplaced concern.
Inside the car, Jono was stunned. Jin Chengyan's words echoed in her mind, each word clear in meaning, yet together they left her somewhat at a loss.
He was still… concerned about her.
Her eyes suddenly welled up with tears as she watched his silhouette outside the car. She didn't understand why they had ended up like this.
So much helplessness and so many reasons had driven them further apart.
From then on, they would be worlds apart, yet always thinking of each other.
Setting down the cup filled with the dark red liquid, Jono unbuckled her seatbelt.
She understood now that Jin Chengyan's inexplicable actions today were simply to see her one last time. Since they had met, then… it was time to say goodbye.
However, as Jin Chengyan composed himself and returned to the car, he saw Jono had already unbuckled her seatbelt and thought she was about to leave. With a click, he locked the car doors.
"Tell me, Jono, that day with Xi Yisheng was just a lie to deceive me." He wanted to believe that Jono had a reason to trick him, that the performance with Xi Yisheng was necessary to create a rift between them.
But as long as Jono explained, Jin Chengyan would believe him.
What he feared most was that Jono would not explain and would only add fuel to the fire.
"I didn't deceive you. Jin Chengyan, I'm not a good woman. What else do you need for me to prove that?" He hadn't expected her to ask such a question.
"Then why didn't you sign the property transfer agreement?" If she had signed it, Jono and Jin Chengyan would have settled their affairs, yet Jono hadn't signed.
Did this mean there was still a possibility for them?
Jono recalled the documents she had seen while packing her things.
She sighed lightly; if it were like this, she should have signed it long ago.
"I'll sign it when I get back. Since you want to give me everything you have, what reason do I have to refuse?" Jono said calmly, devoid of any emotion.
Her unperturbed gaze left Jin Chengyan feeling hopeless.
He had done and said everything he should and shouldn't have, yet nothing could be salvaged.
"Jono, do you really want to leave me so badly? Do you wish for me to disappear from your sight? Do you wish we had never met, that everything could go back to the day we encountered each other at the hotel?" If he could erase everything, Jin Chengyan felt that Jono would want to erase all traces of their relationship.
"Yes." Jono nodded, her answer hesitant.
If Jono had answered without hesitation and decisively, Jin Chengyan might have doubted whether she was lying to him.
But her hesitation indicated that this was the conclusion she had come to after careful thought.
The answer was—yes.
She wished she had never met Jin Chengyan.
"Alright, I'll let you go." With a click, the car door unlocked, and Jono could now exit without any hindrance.
Jono's heart seemed to skip a beat along with that click. She smiled lightly, "Thank you for the Ginger Tea. I hope this method of yours can be used on other girls as well."
She got out of the car, waved for a taxi, and walked away.
Jin Chengyan looked at the cup of Ginger Tea that had already gone cold inside the car, his gaze dimming.
No more would he search online for how to care for a girl suffering from menstrual pain. He would no longer prepare honey-infused water for other girls, nor would he place his hand on another woman's lower abdomen to ease her discomfort.
There would never again be a girl whom Jin Chengyan loved so deeply it pierced his heart.
He knew that.
