The night was deep.
Zhang Xiaoxiao stood outside the courtyard, wrapping her coat tighter around herself before sneezing.
"Zhang Xiaoxiao, you should go back. Don't wait any longer," the system advised.
"I can't. I have to wait for Guangcai to come back," Zhang Xiaoxiao shook her head firmly.
"It's so late, and he still hasn't returned. He probably won't come back tonight," the system said helplessly.
"He will. He promised he would come back," Zhang Xiaoxiao insisted, shaking her head again.
"How do you know he will return? What if he's lying to you?" the system replied, exasperated.
"He wouldn't lie to me," Zhang Xiaoxiao stated confidently.
"Hmph, all men are liars!" the system scoffed.
"Guangcai isn't," Zhang Xiaoxiao said lightly.
"Do you really know him?" the system asked.
"I..." Zhang Xiaoxiao hesitated for a moment before shaking her head, "I don't know him well, but I believe in him."
"You believe in him? Ha! How long have you known him that you dare to trust him?" the system laughed derisively.
"Even though I haven't known him for long, I know he is someone worth trusting," Zhang Xiaoxiao said resolutely.
"You are truly hopeless," the system shook its head.
"You just don't understand," Zhang Xiaoxiao sighed.
"Yes, yes, I don't understand; I don't understand human emotions," the system pouted.
"It's better that way," Zhang Xiaoxiao smiled.
"What do you mean by that?" the system asked in confusion.
"Nothing much," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied with a smile in her eyes.
"Fine, if you won't say anything, then forget it," the system huffed.
"Mm." Zhang Xiaoxiao acknowledged softly.
Seeing that she had fallen silent, the system also stopped talking and left.
Zhang Xiaoxiao stood alone outside the courtyard, gazing at the pitch-black night sky, lost in thought.
"Xiaoxiao, what are you doing standing out here?" Suddenly, a voice came from the neighboring yard.
At the sound, Zhang Xiaoxiao turned her head to look towards the next yard.
There stood a middle-aged woman wearing a blue coat with short hair, slightly plump and with a kind expression on her face.
This middle-aged woman was Li's Mother.
"Auntie, hello," Zhang Xiaoxiao quickly greeted her politely.
"Xiaoxiao, you're still up?" Li's Mother asked with a warm smile as she looked at her.
"I'm not ready for bed yet," Zhang Xiaoxiao shook her head and replied.
"Oh, are you waiting for Guangcai?" Li's Mother asked with a smile.
"Yes," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded in response.
"Guangcai is really good to you," Li's Mother said with a grin.
"Uh..." Zhang Xiaoxiao was momentarily at a loss for words.
"That boy really likes you," Li's Mother continued cheerfully.
"Hehe," Zhang Xiaoxiao chuckled awkwardly, unsure of how to reply.
Seeing her embarrassment, Li's Mother laughed and said, "Alright, I won't tease you anymore. Guangcai will be back soon; you should go inside."
"Okay, goodbye, Auntie," Zhang Xiaoxiao quickly bid farewell.
"Goodbye," Li's Mother waved her hand as she spoke.
Zhang Xiaoxiao turned and walked into the yard, then entered the house.
"Sigh, where is Xiu Mei? Why hasn't she come back yet?" Li's Mother frowned as she looked at the empty yard.
"This child, where on earth has she run off to?" Li's Mother murmured to herself.
"I can't just sit here; I need to go look for her," Li's Mother said, turning to leave the yard.
Zhang Xiaoxiao sat on a stone bench, bored as she rested her chin on her hand, gazing toward the yard's entrance and waiting quietly.
Time passed slowly.
Suddenly, Zhang Xiaoxiao stood up from the stone bench and quickly walked to the yard's entrance, opening the door and stepping outside.
She followed the path out of the yard, waiting for Zhao Guangcai.
The night breeze gently blew, causing her clothes to flutter softly.
She rubbed her nose with her hand and continued to wait.
Finally, she heard the sound of a car engine and then saw headlights approaching in the distance.
It was Zhao Guangcai's car.
Zhang Xiaoxiao felt a surge of joy and waved her hand, shouting, "Guangcai! Guangcai!"
The car slowly came to a stop in front of her.
The door opened, and Zhao Guangcai stepped out of the vehicle.
"Guangcai!" Zhang Xiaoxiao rushed over and hugged him tightly.
"Xiaoxiao, I'm back," Zhao Guangcai gently patted her back and said softly.
"Guangcai, why did you come back so late?" Zhang Xiaoxiao released him, pouting in complaint.
"I'm sorry; I got back late," Zhao Guangcai replied apologetically.
"What happened to your face?" Suddenly, Zhang Xiaoxiao noticed the wound on Zhao Guangcai's face and anxiously grabbed his arm, asking.
"It's nothing; I got scratched by a fox," Zhao Guangcai said casually.
"What? A fox scratched you?" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed in surprise.
"Mm." Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"How did you get scratched by a fox?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked with concern.
"I encountered two little foxes on the mountain. I wanted to catch them, but instead, they scratched me," Zhao Guangcai said nonchalantly.
"Did they bite you?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked anxiously.
"No," Zhao Guangcai shook his head.
"Really? Don't lie to me," Zhang Xiaoxiao said, still worried.
"I'm really fine," Zhao Guangcai said, gently patting her head in a comforting manner.
"Alright then," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"Okay, let's go home," Zhao Guangcai said with a smile.
"Mm." Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
The two of them held hands and walked back to the yard together.
"Guangcai, do you want to go see the village doctor to check your wound?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"Is it really necessary?" Zhao Guangcai hesitated.
"It’s better to get it checked. What if you catch rabies?" Zhang Xiaoxiao said worriedly.
"Rabies?" Zhao Guangcai was taken aback.
"Yes, foxes can carry the virus too," Zhang Xiaoxiao said seriously.
"I see." Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"So, you should go get checked," Zhang Xiaoxiao urged.
"Alright," Zhao Guangcai agreed with a nod.
"I'll go with you tomorrow morning," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"No need, I can go by myself," Zhao Guangcai quickly waved his hand.
"Okay then," Zhang Xiaoxiao reluctantly conceded.
Seeing her worried expression warmed Zhao Guangcai's heart.
