Third quickly reacted and called out to Seven, who hurried over. The two of them lifted Li Shengma together and began to retreat.
"This won't do, we're too slow," Third said as he hoisted Li Shengma onto his back and started running.
Seven hurriedly followed. "Third, hurry up!"
At that moment, Wang Er Gou and Second finally realized what was happening and quickly turned to flee.
The centipede must have confirmed that the "thing" was safe, as it soon began to pursue them, its movements making a loud noise in the darkness, accompanied by its distinctive sound that sent chills down their spines.
Seeing the centipede closing in, Second shouted, "You guys go ahead! I'll hold it off!"
"Second, let's stick together!" Seven urged.
"If I say go, then you go! Otherwise, none of us will make it out alive."
"No way," Seven firmly rejected. "This centipede's skin is too tough; bullets won't penetrate! You can't handle it alone."
At that moment, Third interjected, "Stop arguing and just run!"
Sighing, Second cursed under his breath, "Damn it, I really can't deal with this thing!" He turned and shouted, "Seven, what are you waiting for? Run!"
As the saying goes: a two-legged creature can't outrun a four-legged one. And now they were up against a monster with a thousand legs! Fortunately, they hadn't traveled far yet.
The centipede continued to chase them relentlessly. Second and Seven kept firing behind them to slow its advance.
"Damn it, this is exhausting!" Seven complained.
"Just hold on a little longer; we're almost there," Wang Er Gou said at that moment.
"Damn it, I'd rather be blown to bits than be eaten by this monster," he muttered, preparing to pull the pin on the grenade.
At that moment, several people ahead had already pushed into the underground passage of the stone sarcophagus. Second shouted, "Get back inside!"
Seven, no longer hesitating, went straight in.
Second was still outside when he saw the centipede lunging toward him. Without thinking, Seven fired several shots! Second quickly dropped back, tumbling into the passage. As he landed, he cursed, "That really hurt!"
The centipede's legs were just reaching the entrance of the passage. Second glanced at it and quickly backed away a bit more, exclaiming, "That was close! I almost lost my life here."
Seven helped Second up and urged, "Run!"
The centipede, furious at having lost its prey, began slamming against the walls, causing the passage to shake violently.
"Damn! It's so powerful! We need to hurry!" Second said.
Due to its massive size, the centipede couldn't fit into the passage but continued to crash against it with brute force, making it hard for them to stand steady.
"Damn it, if we keep getting knocked around like this, we won't escape at all." Seven decided without hesitation and pulled the pin from the grenade. He threw it behind him.
Then he immediately urged everyone to climb up quickly. With a loud explosion, Second was propelled forward by the shockwave of the grenade blast and landed on the ground, rolling a few times. He was covered in smoke!
The stone sarcophagus passage began to collapse! The entire cave started shaking violently as cracks appeared on the walls.
Third shouted, "We need to get out of here!"
Just then, the centipede's head squeezed through the passage of the stone sarcophagus, startling everyone! However, its head was already mangled from the explosion.
"Second" shouted, "You scared the hell out of me! Even in death, you still want to eat us!"
"Wang Er Gou" first crawled through the one-meter-long "Burrow" to assist the injured "Li Shengma." The other three followed suit, crawling over one after another.
Fortunately, this "Tomb Pit" remained unaffected!
"It seems safe now! Let's rest here," "Second" suggested.
"Seven" suddenly interjected, "No, we can't rest here. The structure is compromised; if the rest is damaged, this place isn't safe either."
"Second" replied, "Don't worry so much." "Wang Er Gou" remained silent. After a moment of thought, "Third" said, "Second, let's rest outside instead!"
With no other choice, "Second" reluctantly agreed, and the group crawled out of the "Tomb Pit."
"Seven" was right; shortly after they left, cracks began to appear in the walls of the "Tomb Pit," which then collapsed.
The group hurriedly escaped to the edge of the "Underground River." "Second" took "Li Shengma" from his back and carried him.
To their surprise, they encountered a woman by the river! The girl stood there, drenched, with a corpse lying beside her.
The woman showed little reaction to their arrival. Out of concern, "Seven" urged her to run quickly as the place might collapse.
Still unresponsive, the woman seemed stunned by the death. "Seven," thinking she was in shock, reached out to pull her away. She shrugged off his hand and said, "This place won't collapse!" Then she fell silent.
"Second" added, "It should be safe here." "Third" also believed there was no problem, so they began to rest. A faint beam of light filtered down from the "Skylight," illuminating their surroundings as they settled down.
"Second" carefully laid down "Li Shengma." "Third" examined his wounds; there were numerous scratches on his body, likely inflicted by that centipede! Some were deep enough to expose bone.
Wang Er Gou went to the riverbank to fetch some water. Third dipped his finger into the water, tasted it, and said, "This water can't be used! We need drinking water!"
Second handed over a flask from his bag. He first cleaned Li Shengma's wound. Li Shengma had long since fainted from the pain, his face pale, though it was unclear whether it was from fear or excessive blood loss.
After cleaning the wound, they applied some medicinal powder and wrapped it with a bandage. Finally, Seven took out a pill from his pocket and gave it to Li Shengma. His body temperature noticeably dropped!
Wang Er Gou asked, "Is he alive?" Third nodded in affirmation.
The woman stood there, staring at the surface of the river.
Third walked straight up to the woman and stopped beside her, crouching down to examine the person lying on the ground. He placed his hand on the person's nose; there was no breath. Dead.
The corpse was quite young, appearing to be only in their thirties. As Third examined some features of the body, his expression began to change slowly.
He lifted his head and gave the woman a questioning look. She nodded, confirming what he suspected.
Second asked the woman, "Where is Old Liu?" The woman did not respond, remaining silent like a mute.
"I’m going up!" This statement seemed directed at herself as much as at everyone else. Without waiting for a reply, she grabbed the rope and swiftly climbed up.
Third remained crouched beside the corpse for a moment longer before finally lifting it and tossing it into the Underground River.
Second looked on and said, "Having a resting place is not bad! Although I don’t know who that person is!" Seven also took a glance.
Second remarked, "It's a pity we didn't catch that impostor!" Seven replied with a smile, "Who knows? They might have already been blown up by us." With that, both of them laughed!
After staying there for a while longer, they all began to climb up one by one.
At this moment, the sky was just beginning to lighten, and the woman had not yet left. After seeing a few people approach, she walked over to Third and said, "This is what you wanted." With that, she handed a delicate box to Third and added, "Tell that old man that the consequences of using it will be the same as that corpse from earlier."
Third remained silent as he accepted the box. The woman did not linger and left immediately.
Wang Er Gou stared at the woman's retreating figure, feeling a bit strange. Soon, the others gathered around, and Second said, "Hurry up and open it; let's see what that old man wanted us to find."
Seven and Wang Er Gou also widened their eyes in anticipation. Without hesitation, Third opened the box. Inside was a wriggling worm.
Second reached out to touch it, but Third warned, "That worm is poisonous!" Second was startled and said, "Fortunately, my hand didn't touch it."
The worm was entirely black, covered in countless patterns. It resembled an ordinary silkworm but had distinct differences upon closer inspection.
Third said, "Let's not look at it anymore. We've completed our task; from now on, we have nothing to do with that old man."
Seven and Second nodded in agreement. Everything seemed settled now.
A wave of disappointment washed over them as they looked at the unconscious Li Shengma lying on the ground, reminding them of their true leader whose fate remained unknown. They couldn't help but feel melancholic.
Moreover, how many had died here? At least that one called Lord Cao was dead, and Wu Qingshan lost two subordinates—Old Liu and Fat Steward—whose fates were still uncertain! Then there was Li Shengma, and their own group had nearly met a similar fate.
In the end, it was all for such an ugly black worm. The group fell silent for a moment. Yet their lives were still in someone else's hands.
Second spoke up again, "What do you think that old man wants with such a worm?"
Wang Er Gou replied, "It's not just any worm; it's something much more significant." Seven nodded in agreement. "This could be an extraordinary treasure. If we weren't still half alive in his hands, I would claim it for myself," Seven said fiercely.
Third interrupted him, saying, "We can't afford to mess with something like this; don't get any foolish ideas."
" Second " scolded, "When will you change your habit of liking things that bring death?"
"Seven" chuckled, "That's really impossible!"
As he spoke, he took out a bead from his backpack and began to play with it in his hands. The moment the bead was revealed, it sparkled and shone under the sunlight, making it difficult for the others to open their eyes!
"Seven" quickly put it away; this truly was a rare treasure. "Third" observed everything and simply said, "Make sure 'Seven' keeps it safe and doesn't show it to outsiders."
"Seven" nodded in agreement, "Of course, I will take good care of such a treasure." Meanwhile, "Wang Er Gou," who was walking beside them, took on the task of carrying "Li Shengma."
As they walked and talked, they took turns carrying "Li Shengma." He woke up the next day, still a bit disoriented and mumbling nonsense. It wasn't until the third day that he was fully awake. Looking at the four people around him, he confirmed that he had escaped from that place that had nearly cost him his life.
He began to calm down. "Seven" asked, "Are you feeling better?" He replied, "Much better. I'm much calmer than when I was calling for help before. Thank you all!"
"If you're going to thank someone, thank 'Third.' He saved you," "Third" interjected. "No need to thank anyone; it's just that your life wasn't meant to end yet."
With that, "Li Shengma" fell silent. After a moment of quiet, he said, "Three went in; two died. One was eaten by termites until nothing remained of his bones, and another was swallowed by a centipede. I warned 'Lord Cao' not to take such things, but he wouldn't listen!"
It seemed like "Li Shengma" was speaking more to himself than to anyone else.
But now, none of that mattered; it was all in the past. "Third" said. " Second " then asked, "What exactly did that 'Lord Cao' take that he shouldn't have?"
