"Wang Er Gou" said aggrievedly, "This can't be blamed on me!"
The lightning unleashed by "Red Clouds" grew thicker and thicker, causing stone pillars to collapse in its wake, chaos spreading everywhere, with flying sand and stones creating a scene of pale devastation.
The situation was becoming increasingly tense; being struck by such lightning would surely mean certain death.
The dark red light intensified, and the two boxes that "Third" held became increasingly unstable.
At this moment, there was no way to escape.
"Li Shengma" looked at "Third" and noticed that his current condition was not good. He said, "Why don't I handle it myself?" After hearing this, "Third" glanced at him and replied, "You can't control it."
With that, he focused on the two boxes. "Li Shengma" stopped speaking and kept his eyes on the situation, ready to implement the second method at the first sign of trouble.
Leading the group was "Seven," whose gaze wandered everywhere. He kept muttering to himself, "Earth Cave, Skylight. If you don't show up soon, we're done for."
Running like this was truly exhausting. "Wang Er Gou" had already begun to gasp for breath, feeling pain in his lower abdomen.
"I can't run anymore," "Wang Er Gou" shouted.
" Second " turned back to look and saw that "Wang Er Gou's" steps were becoming unsteady. He quickly supported "Wang Er Gou's" shoulder and said, "Hang in there." With that, he helped "Wang Er Gou" continue running.
If "Wang Er Gou" had any lingering grudges against the others before, they should have melted away in this moment.
As the saying goes: "Adversity reveals true feelings; those who can only share wealth but not hardship are everywhere."
"Wang Er Gou," filled with emotion, said, "Thank you, Brother Cao!"
But " Second " had no time to listen to such sentiments. He focused solely on fleeing. Surviving was the most important thing; once dead, nothing else mattered.
Walking at the front, Seven finally spoke up, shouting, "Everyone, get the ropes ready. There's an Earth Cave ahead." The other four, upon hearing this, prepared their ropes.
Seven was the first to toss the rope down, securing one end to a stone pillar before jumping in after it.
Next was Second, who also tied a good rope. Second called out, "No need for more ropes; two will be enough."
One by one, the five descended. The dark Red Clouds soon caught up with them. As if sensing their presence, it retracted its lightning and thunder, probing the area before striking down with bolts of electricity.
The Earth Cave began to collapse, quickly burying the entrance. The group might have already met their fate if this truly was an Earth Cave.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Below the Earth Cave was complete darkness; fallen stones and dirt had completely sealed off the entrance.
Although they were not buried under the debris, the situation was far from optimistic. They had landed in a hidden crevice. While they had escaped the immediate threat of collapse, the cramped space made it difficult for them to breathe.
Now that they had fallen below, Third could clearly feel that whatever was in the box had settled down.
Second shouted, "What do we do now?"
They barely had any room to move. Still, being alive was a small consolation.
Seven replied, "There's no need to rush to escape; that thing might still be waiting for us outside."
"We can wait until morning to go out; it won't be too late."
The crevice stretched on but remained narrow. Among the five of them, only Wang Er Gou could move slightly; the others felt trapped inside, unable to budge. Second was in the worst position, appearing somewhat overweight.
"Damn it, we have to get out of here. Being stuck like this is worse than dying. It's unbearable," said Second.
Li Shengma, closest to the dirt pile, felt even worse, his face nearly pressed against it. Yet he didn't complain a single word.
At that moment, thunder rumbled above them again, though it felt less intense than before.
"Damn it. It's still not letting up." After several hours of intermittent sounds, finally, they no longer heard that noise.
"Li Shengma, try to push the dirt away over there; there should be a crack or some space," Third said calmly. Li Shengma could hardly take it anymore.
He started to work, pushing against the dirt pile, which turned out to be less compact than he had imagined, easily giving way in large amounts.
After a while, Li Shengma said, "I need tools."
Wang Er Gou pulled a shovel from his backpack and struggled to pass it forward.
Li Shengma began to dig with the shovel. The crack over there was larger than expected; it seemed like quite a bit of dirt could be "swallowed" by it.
After about an hour of clearing, Li Shengma was able to stand on top of the dirt pile. The entrance of this Earth Cave was originally quite large, with a diameter of about one meter.
Third handed a rope to Li Shengma; one end had a claw attached. He swung it up and secured it tightly. "I'll go up first."
Third nodded.
Behind them, Second urged, "Hurry up, will you?"
Li Shengma didn't waste any more time and quickly climbed up. Next was Third, followed by Wang Er Gou, Second, and finally Seven.
Several people bore scars from the cracks that had pressed against them.
Once they ascended, the first sensation was one of relief. They brushed off the dirt from their bodies before feeling a twinge of pain. Second said, "It's much better outside. Damn it, we should go into caves less often."
Seven exhaled a cloud of stale air, having nearly suffered internal injuries from the pressure in his mouth just moments ago.
Li Shengma glanced at Third and said, "Give me the item!" Without hesitation, Third handed over the black box to Li Shengma.
Li Shengma opened a small gap to take a look inside, feeling a sense of relief wash over him as he muttered, "Thanks."
Third replied, "This kind of thing is not for you to handle."
Li Shengma remained silent, simply putting the item away again.
After all the commotion, Wang Er Gou felt a bit overwhelmed and suggested, "How about we rest here for a bit?"
Seven responded, "This place isn't safe."
Third also disagreed, and Second added, "If that ghostly thing comes back, we might not be so lucky next time."
In the end, they only rested for five minutes. Each person replenished their water and food before continuing on their way.
The sky had yet to brighten fully, but there was a faint misty light that allowed them to see the path beneath their feet. They had completely lost track of where they were.
Seven asked, "Er Gou, there shouldn't be any traps laid out here, right?"
Wang Er Gou observed carefully and finally shook his head. "No, everything seems normal in this area."
They continued to walk south, confident that heading in that direction was the right choice.
The others had no objections. Once Seven confirmed the direction, they began their journey, walking until dawn when the sun had already risen.
"Damn it!" Seven couldn't help but curse. They were heading directly towards where the sun was rising, and they had been walking for several hours.
The sun rose in the east.
"Don't panic," Third said. Then he added, "We haven't made a mistake."
Once Seven calmed down, he also noticed something strange. The stone pillars to the south were neatly arranged; indeed, they were in the south, standing like soldiers on guard. The boundary between the Chu River and the Han Border was clearly defined, while the Stone Forest to the east was in disarray.
"Could it be that the sun rises in the south?" Second asked.
"No, it's an optical illusion; according to one theory, there might be an error with the reference object," Seven explained.
Wang Er Gou also realized this and interpreted it using Feng Shui: "It's a form of misdirection."
The group continued on their way, and after about an hour of walking, the sun was now high in the sky.
Indeed, the sun had returned to its correct position, confirming that their directional judgment was accurate.
After walking for another day, night fell again. The surroundings had become familiar, and everyone felt more at ease.
Seven said, "We should be able to get out tomorrow."
Tonight, everyone should rest well! As usual, they didn't light a fire. The moon was full and hung high in the sky, casting beautiful white light down upon them.
The ancients always gazed at the moon, longing for home, and the present generation is no exception. Second sat in silence, lost in memories. Wang Er Gou leaned closer and said, "Brother Cao, you should rest. I'll take over the watch."
Startled from his thoughts, Second replied calmly, "No need." The others were still awake, staring blankly at the moon, each lost in their own past.
Suddenly, a wolf's howl shattered the silence.
On this moonlit night, the howl of wolves echoed through the air! This was precisely the time for wolf packs to roam. Could it be? Not again!
"It's a wolf pack!" Third warned.
The group drew their guns in preparation. Thankfully, Second spoke up, "But we don't have much ammunition. We can't hold out for long."
"I think we should retreat!" Third suggested.
Using the moonlight as their guide, they began to back away, but the wolf pack soon appeared.
The speed of their running made the wind whip through their fur, standing on end as white wolf eyes crowded together. The sounds of their howls rose and fell in a chilling chorus.
Wolf packs typically have an Alpha Wolf that leads organized attacks.
The five of them clearly couldn't outrun the wolves and were quickly surrounded. The Alpha Wolf stood majestically atop a rise, looking down at them with an imposing presence.
"How could there be a wolf pack in a place like this? Don't they usually live on the plains?" Seven remarked.
This place defied logic.
"This pack has about fifty members," Third noted. "The one standing at the highest point is the Alpha Wolf. If we want to escape, we must kill that Alpha Wolf."
Second pulled back the bolt and aimed at the Alpha Wolf, ready to fire, when Third pressed a hand against the muzzle and said, "Don't shoot unless you're absolutely sure."
The wolf pack slowly tightened their Surrounding Circle. Their eyes glowed pale in the moonlight, and the loud howls had ceased, replaced by an occasional low growl.
Wolves were known for their resilience; they would not give up until they achieved their goal, and they were incredibly ferocious. Thus, the spirit of the wolf was often praised.
As the Surrounding Circle continued to shrink, the pressure on the hearts of the few grew heavier. Second could no longer hold back and fired a shot at the Alpha Wolf. However, to his surprise, the Alpha seemed to sense it and dodged with remarkable agility.
Second was stunned. But the Alpha Wolf roared in anger, and at its command, the pack charged forward recklessly.
The others fired continuously, quickly killing a few wolves, but the pack remained unfazed, displaying a complete disregard for life.
The Alpha Wolf howled several more times, and even more wolves joined the fray.
Seeing this, Second shouted, "There are ambushers! Damn it." The wolves behind quickly joined the battle, while Third was now fighting with a dagger.
Looking at the seemingly endless stream of wolves, Third found himself at a loss. The Alpha Wolf was too cunning; it had not joined the fight itself. There was no way to break through.
But what surprised them all was that Li Shengma had managed to escape! He started running away.
Upon seeing someone fleeing, the Alpha became agitated and began to howl incessantly. This time, no reinforcements arrived; instead, more than half of its pack split off to chase after Li Shengma.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Third also broke away from the battle to find a better position for attack. However, as he did so, the remaining wolves locked onto him fiercely.
Meanwhile, the other three found themselves "innocently" left out of the fray.
