The mist before him swirled continuously, as if he had stepped into a fairyland.
Third halted at the edge of the swirling mist. One more step forward, and he would be engulfed by it.
The mist ahead was different from that behind him; it did not spread out everywhere but only reached up to his knees, allowing him to see further without obstruction. Yet, the scenery remained unchanged.
A layer of confusion settled in Third's eyes, much like the billowing clouds of mist that were impossible to grasp. Since someone had led him here, there must be a purpose behind it.
Third hesitated to step into the swirling mist. It brought him a sense of bewilderment, even though he could see farther now.
Lost in thought, Third was suddenly startled as a wild rabbit darted out from one patch of mist, only to leap back into another and vanish instantly.
He quickly registered that the rabbit had disappeared—could it be…? But soon enough, the rabbit reemerged.
"Are you okay?" Third muttered to himself.
Then he cautiously stepped into the mist. The swirling fog quickly enveloped his knees. He tentatively tested the ground beneath him and found solid ground.
With his other foot, he stepped in as well. A strange sense of comfort washed over him. It felt as if all his fatigue was slowly melting away, and his mood relaxed without him even realizing it.
In this swirling mist, no plants grew; it was an endless expanse.
As Third moved forward, he felt much lighter, almost as if he were walking on air. Step by step, he ventured deeper into the mist, unaware of how long he had been walking; this place seemed endless. Yet he felt no fatigue as he continued onward into the depths.
It was as if a cloud of mist had gathered in Third's eyes too.
At that moment, someone rushed toward him with swift strides. Upon seeing Third walking in the mist, she quickly caught up to him and grabbed his hand, pulling him back.
At that moment, Third felt somewhat awakened, though his eyes still held endless confusion. Through the haze, he recognized her figure and murmured, "What are you doing here?"
She completely ignored the words, knowing that if she didn't turn back soon, it would be too late.
At that moment, she felt no resistance; suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her as a hidden weapon embedded itself in her arm.
The pain almost made her release Third's hand, but gritting her teeth, she continued to pull Third along as they ran back.
Blood from her arm flowed down to her wrist and onto Third's hand.
Her blood soaked into Third's palm, and the confusion in his eyes slowly faded. Just as another hidden weapon came flying towards them, Third stepped forward to shield her.
He took the blow in his back. She was taken aback and said, "Why aren't you running?"
Third endured the pain and pulled Xin Shui Su to continue their escape. The mist gradually dissipated, as if it had never existed, blending into the surrounding environment.
After running for a while longer, blood continued to flow from her wound, and both of them began to sweat. After a moment, Xin Shui Su said, "We don't need to run anymore; it's safe here."
Third stopped but still held onto Xin Shui Su's hand. She glanced at him, and he finally realized and released her grip.
Yet his hand was still stained with her blood.
Xin Shui Su said, "Let's clean your wound first." Without waiting for Third to respond, she made him sit down and tore open his shirt. She glanced at the weapon lodged in his back and thought to herself: thankfully, it’s not poisoned. Xin Shui Su coldly instructed, "Just bear with it."
Third nodded slightly as Xin Shui Su used her strength to pull the weapon out. Sweat immediately beaded on his forehead like large droplets. He remained silent.
Wiping his sweat away, he turned to look at Xin Shui Su.
She was applying medicine to his wound. Once she finished, Third stood up to help her tend to her injury.
She directly refused and turned her back to Third.
Clenching her teeth, she pulled out the hidden weapon, beads of sweat already forming on her forehead. After applying the medicine, she quickly wrapped the bandage.
Third asked, "Are you done?"
Xin Shui Su replied weakly, "It's ready." A flush appeared on her face, but her cheeks remained pale.
Third said, "I have put you in danger."
Xin Shui Su shook her head but remained silent.
After a moment, she added, "Just now, you fell into an illusion; someone used a trick to confuse you."
Third replied, "I was careless."
Xin Shui Su said, "Your situation is very dangerous; you should leave the mountain as soon as possible."
Third asked, "Do you know something?" Xin Shui Su sighed and said, "I'm not the only one who knows."
Third also sighed deeply. After glancing at him, Xin Shui Su urged, "You need to leave the mountain now."
Third hesitated before saying, "I can't leave yet. I can't ignore their safety." Xin Shui Su certainly understood who they referred to.
In the end, it was Xin Shui Su who compromised.
Third continued, "Some things must be resolved; you can't keep avoiding them. You have to face them eventually."
"Once we find them, you can all come down the mountain together," Xin Shui Su said as if she hadn't heard the question.
"What about you?" Third asked.
Xin Shui Su looked at Third with some surprise but replied coldly, "I know what to do." Third fell silent.
"Let's rest for now," Xin Shui Su suggested.
The two sat facing each other, but neither spoke. Xin Shui Su remained awake, her gaze fixed on Third, a teasing smile playing on her lips.
Third closed his eyes to rest as the night slowly enveloped them. However, it passed quickly, and they managed to get through the night without incident.
Third had a dream last night, where a group of people surrounded him, pushing him toward a circular platform. Just when he felt trapped, it was Xin Shui Su who saved him once again.
He woke up startled by the dream. Birds had already perched on the branches, chirping cheerfully.
Xin Shui Su had gathered some wild fruits and handed them to Third when he woke up to satisfy his hunger.
"Eat up, then we’ll set off," Xin Shui Su said. Third nodded. After tidying up a bit, they began their journey.
Xin Shui Su led the way, and Third followed without questioning her. After walking for a while, he sensed something was off and asked, "Where are you taking me?"
"Just follow me," she replied. Her voice suddenly changed, sending a chill down Third's spine.
A bad feeling crept into Third's heart as the forest ahead grew denser. He took a couple of steps but then stopped in his tracks.
Xin Shui Su turned back and said, "Why have you stopped? Hurry up and catch up."
"Still not moving," Xin Shui Su said, "Do you want to die?"
Third remained silent, his instincts telling him that something was off.
"Don't go forward," Third said.
"Don't you trust me?" Xin Shui Su replied. Third shook his head and insisted, "We can't go forward! You can't go either." As he spoke, he reached for her hand to pull her back.
But to Third's surprise, he couldn't pull her at all; instead, she was dragging him forward. It felt as if he had lost control of his body and was being pulled along against his will.
"You are not her!" Third exclaimed in a panic.
At that moment, Xin Shui Su stopped, turned her head with a sinister smile, and her body began to slowly fade away. "It's too late for you to realize now," she said, her voice cold and eerie.
Third tried to shake off her grip, but it was impossible. She continued to drag him forward, no matter how much he struggled.
"This is bad," Third thought as sweat began to bead on his forehead. Was this how it would end? All because he had been careless.
Just then, a thick wooden stick suddenly fell from the sky and struck Third directly, causing him to lose consciousness.
When he woke up, he touched the back of his head and found six curious eyes staring at him.
Nearby, another wooden stick lay on the ground. A few people were saying, "Second, did you hit him too hard just now?"
Second could only smile awkwardly in response.
At that moment, Wang Er Gou exclaimed, "He's awake! Brother Yu is awake!"
The three of them immediately gathered around to stare at Third. Second quickly helped Third up, and Third said, "What just happened to me?"
Seven replied, "Third, you were possessed just now. You were running around like a madman, and in the end, you even tried to hurt yourself with a dagger. So, Second had no choice but to knock you out."
Second awkwardly smiled and said, "Sorry about that, Third."
"It's fine," Third replied. You mean I was possessed? Third tried to recall what had happened earlier, but the moment he did, his head began to ache.
"I remember..." Third started to say but then couldn't recall anything further.
Second said, "If you can't remember, then don't think about it. It's all in the past now."
Seven added, "This place is too eerie. First it was Second who had an incident, then it was Third. Next, it might be me and Ergou Master. We should leave here first and discuss things later."
Everyone agreed, and the four of them quickly retreated from the area. They made their way back to the clearing where they had first arrived on the mountain.
However, what startled them was that the campfire had reignited.
The four stared at the fire, frozen in place as night began to fall.
"Could this be the legendary will-o'-the-wisp?" Second exclaimed. As soon as he said this, they all felt a chill in their hearts.
"We should avoid provoking it," Seven suggested, and everyone unanimously agreed.
Wang Er Gou remarked, "This doesn't look like a will-o'-the-wisp; those float in the air. This fire is still built from dry wood."
Only then did they realize what was happening. Second said, "Could it be that we are just being overly suspicious and scaring ourselves?"
At that moment, the voices from earlier returned.
This time, it was unmistakably real—two men were talking, and their voices grew louder as they approached.
"Let's get out of here!" Seven said. The others instinctively nodded, but none of them moved, wanting to see the situation for themselves.
As the voices drew nearer, Second suddenly exclaimed, "Wait a minute! This voice sounds familiar!"
Second seemed to have an epiphany and blurted out three times, "Oh, oh, oh! I know who it is!"
"Is it those two Tomb Raiders?" Seven asked.
Sure enough, two large men came into view.
A voice boomed, "Who’s up ahead?"
Second shouted back, "It's me!" Upon hearing that voice, the other man immediately retorted, "So it's you, you little rascal!"
Second stepped forward, followed by the other three. The two men exchanged a few sharp words before settling down. The six of them gathered around the campfire.
Second asked, "Did you guys start this fire?"
The other man replied, "Not us. Are you suggesting there are ghosts?"
