Fang Yan woke up in a state of chaos, her head pounding. She looked around; every detail of the room felt so familiar yet so strange. There were photos of her on the desk, her name written on the cover page of a notebook, and detailed personal information stored on the computer. Everything seemed to indicate that this was indeed her room.
"This can't be happening," she muttered to herself, a wave of inexplicable panic rising within her.
She remembered working late at the research institute last night, pushing herself to finish a research report. She had almost pulled an all-nighter. After completing a chapter, she planned to take a short break before diving back into work. But when she woke up again, she found herself inexplicably here.
Fang Yan walked over to the mirror and looked at her reflection. It was indeed her, but something felt off. Her clothing, hairstyle, and even her gaze exuded an unfamiliar aura.
"Could it be... I've crossed over?" Her voice trembled, barely able to believe it.
She had considered the possibility of memory confusion or even a split personality. Yet, as a researcher filled with theories and physical models, she knew this version of herself was a web novelist, with countless documents of stories on the computer—both realities couldn't be false.
Fang Yan sat back down at the computer, trying to find clues in chat logs and documents. She discovered that she hadn’t completely taken over this body in the parallel world; instead, she alternated control with another version of herself at seven in the morning and seven in the evening. She worked the night shift while the other her took care of things during the day.
"This is insane," she murmured, feeling dizzy.
She attempted to leave a message for her other "self," hoping to gain more information but found herself completely at a loss. After countless failed attempts, Fang Yan lay back on the bed, carefully recalling what had happened before her crossing over in search of a way back to her original world.
As far as she remembered, she had stayed late at work to finish a research report. Writing it had been mentally exhausting, and after completing a chapter, she intended to rest briefly before continuing. But then she woke up here without any explanation.
"It must be the Particle Accelerator," she suddenly sat up straight, a glimmer of realization flashing in her eyes.
That afternoon, Xiao Yu from the neighboring lab had come to complain about how there were still inspectors visiting just before closing time and how their director had sent him out to buy fruit. What else did he say? Oh right, it seemed that the neighboring lab had completed debugging their new Particle Accelerator and was preparing for its first test that very night.
"Could it be that the Particle accelerated to near Light Speed and caused an unprecedented change, leading to my crossing over?" she murmured to herself, a wave of inexplicable excitement surging within her.
She took out her phone, intending to call Xiao Yu. But in this parallel universe, did she and Xiao Yu still know each other?
As she hesitated, she noticed two unread Text Messages on her screen, both sent before seven o'clock.
One was from Xiao Yu: "Wait for me at home at seven-thirty."
The other was from an Unknown Number: "Don't trust Yu Xia! Absolutely don't!"
Fang Yan's heart raced as a sense of dread washed over her. What did this have to do with Yu Xia?
It was already seven-twenty; should she believe the stranger?
Moreover, why had they only messaged her on the third day after her crossing over?
At that moment, there was a sudden knock on her door.
"Is it Xiao Yu arriving early?" Her heart tightened as she got up to open the door.
Standing at the entrance was a tall man in casual formal attire, with a rugged face and a Mechanical Watch, exuding the aura of a successful individual.
"Who are you?" Fang Yan asked warily.
"Fang Yan, we don't have time!" the man said urgently, grabbing her arm. "Come with me quickly!"
"What are you doing?" Fang Yan instinctively resisted, trying to pull her arm away from his grip.
At that moment, a neighbor heard the commotion and peeked out to see what was happening.
"Have you forgotten?" the man said loudly on purpose, dragging her down the stairs. "We agreed to meet the client tonight, and I haven't seen you at all!"
The neighbor quickly withdrew their head, and Fang Yan felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.
"I... I don't need to meet the client," she struggled to say, a sense of foreboding rising within her.
"Stop acting," the man sneered, shoving her into the back seat of a black sedan before stepping on the gas and speeding away from the neighborhood.
Fang Yan was jostled around, her vision blurring. One thought consumed her mind: how did all of this happen? And would she be able to find her way home?
