"Zhou Yun, are you angry?"
Xiao An hugged me from behind.
I shook my head. "No."
"I know you're upset. I shouldn't have video-called Liu Lan today, but you know I just wanted to see Huanhuan. It wasn't anything else. Besides, Huanhuan is the cat you like, right? You spent so much money on its toys before..."
He finally remembered that detail.
I paused for a moment. "Xiao An, Huanhuan is your and Liu Lan's cat."
"I've told you, Liu Lan and I are over. You're my girlfriend now."
He hesitated, his tone becoming slightly impatient. "Zhou Yun, can you stop dwelling on the past?"
I stared at him. "I'm not dwelling on the past?"
"Then who is dwelling on my present?"
Xiao An opened his mouth but was left speechless.
"Forget it, I'm tired."
I closed my eyes.
Xiao An rested his chin on my shoulder, nuzzling my face lightly as he whispered, "Zhou Yun, I really only see you as my girlfriend."
"I only see you as my boyfriend too."
I meant it.
In the middle of the night, I had a dream. In the dream, Xiao An's ex-girlfriend came back, entangling with him in various ways until they happily got back together and then left me behind.
I woke up with a start from a flash of lightning.
Xiao An asked me drowsily, "What's wrong?"
I stared at him blankly.
"Xiao An, if... I mean if your ex-girlfriend came back to reconcile with you, would you get back together with her?"
Xiao An became alert.
He looked into my eyes and said clearly, "Zhou Yun, Liu Lan and I have incompatible values; our aspirations and career plans are different. Besides, she broke my heart. I wouldn't get back together with her."
I felt a tightness in my chest. "Is that so?"
Xiao An asked, "You don't believe me?"
I shook my head.
But why did hearing that answer make me feel so uneasy?
Xiao An seemed to think of something, and his gaze softened a bit. "Zhou Yun, are you feeling jealous?"
Yes.
I was feeling jealous.
I wanted to shout at him that I didn't like any connection he had with his ex-girlfriend.
But I couldn't bring myself to say it.
I was afraid that if I voiced it, he would think I was petty and calculating.
After all, he had repeatedly emphasized that he no longer loved Liu Lan.
I was just his girlfriend, and Liu Lan was merely his ex-girlfriend.
Xiao An's phone vibrated in the middle of the night.
Drowsily, I glanced at it; it was a call from Liu Lan.
Xiao An stared at the string of numbers, hesitating for a long time before finally dialing the phone.
Liu Lan's voice came through, trembling with tears. "A-An, I'm scared..."
Xiao An lowered his voice. "Scared of what?"
"There's thunder. I'm really worried about Huanhuan. It's so timid; what if it gets sick…"
Xiao An sat up. "What do you want me to do?"
Liu Lan sniffled. "Could you go check on Huanhuan, please?"
Xiao An replied, "It's the middle of the night. Why can't you find a better excuse than this to make me go see Huanhuan?"
"A-An, I'm just really worried about Huanhuan …"
"From now on, unless it's about Huanhuan, don't contact me."
With that, he hung up the phone.
Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair and quietly got out of bed to check on Huanhuan.
After a while, he sent me a photo. "Zhou Yun, Huanhuan is fine."
Outside, lightning flashed and thunder roared.
I tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. My mind was a jumble of thoughts.
I remembered the first time I met Xiao An; it was at the pet store. I had just started working not long ago and saved up for a few months to buy a British Shorthair— Huanhuan. That day it rained heavily, and I got soaked bringing Huanhuan home.
