Liu Lan smiled and picked up Huanhuan. " Huanhuan, it's been a long time. Did you miss me?"
Just as I reached the entrance of the community, I saw Xiao An coming out with an umbrella.
When he noticed the dirty Huanhuan in my arms, his brows furrowed slightly. "Why did you get such an ugly cat?"
Later, I learned that he was my neighbor. After graduating, he started a software company that had gained some recognition. Meanwhile, I was just a nine-to-five worker, having graduated not long ago and still burdened with mortgage and car loans.
After that night, we occasionally ran into each other in the community, but we hardly spoke. Until one day, we met again at the entrance of the community.
He was holding a black umbrella and walked towards me, his smile clean and gentle.
"Hello, Zhou Yun. My name is Xiao An," he said. "From now on, we are neighbors."
He added, "It's nice to meet you."
In that moment, I felt as if I had encountered someone destined for me.
I picked up Xiao An's phone. His chat history with Liu Lan was quite simple; aside from messages about Huanhuan, there was hardly any other communication.
I opened the call log and saw that the most recent call was from last night—Liu Lan had called him then.
I checked the call details and found that the duration was only one hour. Exiting the call log, I looked at the caller's number and realized Liu Lan's phone number seemed familiar.
It felt like… I had seen it somewhere before?
Then it hit me; that day when Xiao An's friend sent me a message from Liu Lan, this was the same phone number.
I also checked Xiao An's music listening history and found that he had been looping a single song repeatedly.
I clicked on that song. It was sung by Liu Lan. I randomly selected a track and realized it was one I had listened to before, but it was just on shuffle. In that moment, it felt like my heart had died once. I understood then that in his heart, I was different from Liu Lan.
That morning, as I stepped out to walk the dog in the neighborhood, I received a call from Xiao An. His tone was somewhat impatient. "Liu Lan said she wants to take Huanhuan for a few days. If you agree, then agree; if not, just say so. There's no need to consult me about it. Anyway, I'm no longer involved with her."
I paused for a moment before asking, "Are you coming back together?"
"I'm still in a meeting, no time to go back," he replied, his tone faltering slightly. "Besides, we've already broken up; what’s the point of meeting?"
Not long after I returned home, the doorbell rang. It was Liu Lan.
This was the first time I saw her. She wore a thin trench coat, her skin somewhat pale and looking a bit haggard. She glanced around our home, taking in the surroundings with envy in her eyes.
She smiled lightly and said, "You two seem to be doing quite well now."
I nodded, "It's okay."
She walked into the living room, touched the genuine leather sofa, and then looked at the watch on my wrist. "The the Zhou has been developing well lately. The clothes you're wearing and those shoes are all from this season's collection—at least seven figures, right?"
The clothes and shoes I wore were all bought by me.
It had nothing to do with Xiao An.
Just as I was about to speak, footsteps echoed from outside the door.
Xiao An had returned.
A few days ago, he mentioned that he had left some documents at home and asked me to bring them to him. Since I happened to have some free time today, I planned to deliver them and was on my way back home when unexpectedly, just as I stepped inside, he walked in.
Liu Lan's face turned slightly pale upon seeing him. "Why are you back?" she asked.
Xiao An replied coldly, "I'm here to get my documents."
He glanced at me and quickly approached, anxiously wrapping his arms around me. "Zhou Yun, don't misunderstand! I'm really just here for the documents!"
I looked at Liu Lan and noticed her complexion had grown even paler.
Huanhuan came running down from upstairs. Spotting Liu Lan, she meowed softly and then dashed over to nuzzle against her calf.
Huanhuan continued to meow, seemingly in response.
I felt a bit awkward.
