When Sofia returned home, she immediately sensed something was off in the air. Her usually light footsteps came to an abrupt halt as her gaze was drawn to a familiar yet strange figure on the sofa. Ethan sat there, expressionless, his face pale as if all vitality had been drained from him. Sofia's heart tightened suddenly, overwhelmed by a wave of intense unease and fear.
"Ethan?" Sofia called his name softly, but Ethan showed no reaction. His eyes were vacant, staring blankly ahead, his entire body stiff like a shell devoid of soul, completely unaware of Sofia's presence.
Sofia's breathing quickened, anxiety flooding her mind. She hurriedly set down her bag and coat, tiptoeing over to his side, afraid to disturb him. Her footsteps were gentle, yet each step was filled with tension and worry.
"Ethan, are you okay?" she gently sat beside him, her voice tender yet trembling, as if testing his response. She reached out to touch his shoulder lightly, trying to make him aware of her presence. However, Ethan remained rigid, trapped in some unescapable hell, showing no sign of awareness.
Sofia's heartbeat raced faster; the scene before her filled her with dread. Ethan's complexion was ashen, his eyes lifeless, as if he had fallen into an unfathomable darkness from which he could not escape. His lips quivered slightly but emitted no sound; even his breathing had become faint and erratic.
"Ethan?" Sofia called again softly, her tone laced with concern and love. She tried to awaken him from this bizarre state, but Ethan seemed to have lost all senses, oblivious to everything around him. His gaze remained vacant, as if he were staring at a terrifying world visible only to him.
Sofia's fingers gently caressed his face, feeling his cold skin. Her heart sank deeper as her fear intensified. She knew that Ethan must have gone through something unimaginable that had pulled him into an abyss from which he could not escape.
"Can you hear me?" Sofia's voice grew more urgent, tears shimmering in her eyes. She attempted to pull Ethan back to reality with warmth and love, but his silence and rigidity left her feeling powerless.
Just as Sofia leaned gently against Ethan's shoulder in an attempt to comfort him, Ethan's body suddenly trembled violently. As if awakened by some invisible terror, he shot up, his eyes filled with extreme fear and confusion. His pupils dilated instantly; his face turned ghostly pale as he let out a piercing scream from his throat: "Stay away from me! No!"
Sofia stepped back in shock, staring at Ethan with disbelief. Her eyes were filled with concern while an indescribable fear surged within her. She couldn't understand why Ethan had suddenly lost control like this, as if he had seen something unbearable. His gaze was wild and desperate; he seemed trapped in some unfathomable darkness.
"Ethan... what happened?" Sofia's voice trembled as she struggled to remain calm, but the fear in her heart was impossible to conceal.
Yet Ethan did not hear her voice. His eyes were fixed on Sofia's face with terror and despair sweeping over him like a storm. The Sofia before him was no longer the familiar gentle and lovely wife he knew; instead, she appeared as a horrific figure with a bloodied face. Her skin looked as if it had been peeled away; flesh rolled back with bright red blood seeping out. The stench of decay emanated from her face, causing Ethan's stomach to churn violently.
The face was marred with cracks and scratches, the skin hanging in decay, revealing the blood vessels and muscles beneath, with clots of dark red blood congealed into spots. Her eyes were sunken deep into their bony sockets, emanating a sinister glow. The corners of her mouth still curled slightly upward, but it was no longer a smile of affection; instead, it twisted into a grotesque, putrid expression, like a monster crawling out of hell.
"Don't come near me! You're not her!" Ethan's voice was filled with terror and despair, his throat producing a hoarse scream as he recoiled violently, trembling hands covering his face in an attempt to shield himself from the horrifying visage before him.
Sofia stared at Ethan in shock, unable to comprehend why he had suddenly lost control as if she were a stranger, a monstrous being. She couldn't grasp what he saw in her; the worry on her face gradually gave way to fear. Her heart began to race, her eyes filled with shock and pain. "Ethan, it's me! I'm Sofia!"
But Ethan could not hear her words; his world was completely consumed by that bloodied face, all reason shattered by this overwhelming fear. His body trembled more violently, his heartbeat quickening as he fell into a terrifying abyss from which there seemed to be no escape. The image of that decayed face loomed closer, as if it intended to swallow him whole.
"Get away from me! Please, just leave me alone!" Ethan screamed hysterically, his voice laced with helplessness and fear, the madness in his eyes becoming increasingly evident like a soul trapped in hell.
Sofia stood frozen in place, her face a mask of confusion and anguish as tears began to well up in her eyes. She didn't know how to comfort her husband who had descended into madness nor could she understand what had transpired in his world.
Suddenly, Ethan leaped up from the sofa as if propelled by an invisible force. His gaze remained fixed on Sofia; that once familiar face now morphed into an unbearable horror in his eyes. His complexion turned pale as paper as he retreated in terror, muttering repeatedly, "No... don't come near me... please..."
Sofia's eyes widened in fear and disbelief. Her hands trembled slightly, filled with confusion and unease. She couldn't comprehend what was happening; it felt as if everything had collapsed in an instant. The man she loved, who had spoken softly with her just that morning and shared tender moments, now recoiled from her in terror as if she were some incomprehensible monster.
Ethan stumbled toward the bathroom, his steps unsteady and filled with extreme dread and despair. He couldn't bear to look at Sofia again; that bloodied face lingered in his mind like a haunting specter. Each time he tried to focus on her, her visage became more horrific and distorted, seemingly reeking of decay and bloodiness that suffocated him.
"Don't come near me! No!" Ethan screamed almost desperately, his voice brimming with terror and madness as if fleeing from some unseen predator. His footsteps quickened as he grasped the bathroom doorknob with trembling hands and nearly hurled himself inside before locking the door behind him, believing this was the only way to escape this unbearable nightmare.
Sofia stood in the living room, stunned by the unfolding events, her heart heavy with confusion and pain. She couldn't believe that the man who once shared every night and day with her now feared her so deeply that he recoiled as if confronted by something unspeakably terrifying. She stood there rigidly, her mind swirling in chaos.
"Ethan..." Her voice trembled, barely audible. She tried to reach out to him rationally, hoping he would recognize her as his familiar wife again, but deep down she knew he had lost control. Tears began to flow unbidden down her cheeks as the pain within her deepened.
Sofia could not understand how the gentle and normal Ethan from that morning had suddenly transformed into this. They had shared breakfast together, everything seemed fine, and they even discussed their upcoming plans. But now, his eyes were filled with madness, as if he had fallen into a dark world that she could not reach, pushing her out.
"Ethan... what is happening?" Sofia's heart was filled with questions and fear, but she received no answer. She stood there, staring at the closed bathroom door, feeling a deep sense of helplessness and pain.
