The day my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, the entire family fell silent. Ding Jian's eyes were red and swollen. My sister-in-law cried incessantly, repeatedly saying she didn't want to be an orphan. I held back my own sorrow and tried to comfort her, saying, "Mom, please don't worry. Medical technology is so advanced now; they will definitely be able to cure your illness."
To my surprise, my mother-in-law shook her head and refused treatment. She said she didn't want to burden us. From that moment on, our family seemed to wind up like a clock, revolving around her. Ding Jian took leave from work, my sister-in-law quit her job, and even I turned down a promotion opportunity.
We took my mother-in-law on ten trips. My sister-in-law moved back home to stay with her every day. My mother-in-law said she wanted to eat the meals I cooked, so I took over all the household chores. She said she wanted to see me smile, so I made sure to wear a smile on my face every day.
Our family had only one wish—to ensure that my mother-in-law could live out her remaining days happily. She would occasionally call on me for help, claiming she felt unwell and even asking me to wash her clothes. I never complained; I just quietly took care of everything. After all, she was a cancer patient.
I didn't want her to leave this world filled with regrets, nor did I want her to think of me as a wicked daughter-in-law. But my mother-in-law began to take advantage of my kindness. One time, she even asked me to wash her underwear.
"He Xing," she said, "I'm not feeling well down there; could you help me wash my underwear?"
I had just finished my shower and stepped out of the bathroom when my mother-in-law sat on the sofa, holding up a pair of underwear, her expression calm as she ordered me around. I froze in place.
In all my life, I had only washed my husband's underwear and had never washed anyone else's. My mother-in-law seemed to sense my reluctance and immediately frowned. "He Xing, are you disgusted by me?"
"No, Mom, I'll wash it right away," I replied, taking the underwear from her and turning toward the bathroom.
"Wait a minute," she suddenly called out to me.
I turned back to see her looking at me seriously. "He Xing, my health isn't good; I can't catch a chill. You need to wash the underwear by hand."
"Okay," I answered softly.
At that moment, I felt very wronged. I had never washed anyone's underwear before, let alone by hand. But when I thought about how my mother-in-law was a cancer patient, I held back my feelings. I didn't want her to leave this world filled with regrets.
But later, I found out that my mother-in-law didn't actually have cancer. She was pretending. Her goal was to enter my life and completely destroy me.
I had been married to Ding Jian for five years, always seeing him as my benefactor. I met Ding Jian during college. At that time, I was known throughout the school as a poor student, while Ding Jian was recognized as a devoted son.
After learning about my difficult circumstances, Ding Jian took the initiative to reach out to me and offered me a lot of help. He would introduce me to part-time jobs, give me some clothes, and even load money onto my meal card. At first, I rejected his assistance.
"Ding Jian" smiled at me and said, "I just want to help you, nothing more. You don't need to feel any pressure."
His smile was warm, like the sunlight on a spring day. I grew up in a family that favored boys over girls and had never experienced warmth before.
"Ding Jian's" presence made me feel the deepest warmth in the world. I was touched by his kindness, and eventually, we naturally came together.
Before our wedding, "Ding Jian" said to me, "He Xing, my mom raised me all by herself; it hasn't been easy for her. Let's have her move in with us."
Thinking of how he had helped me and recalling the maternal love I had missed out on since childhood, I agreed without hesitation.
But I never expected that this decision would mark the beginning of my nightmare.
