Lin Yue stood in front of the Lu Family Mansion, her hand lightly touching the heavy oak door. The door slowly creaked open, revealing a spacious foyer where the marble floor reflected the dazzling light of the chandelier.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nervous heart. Today, she was not just Lu Tingxiao's assistant; she was also a stand-in for her sister, Lin Wan. This role filled each of her steps with uncertainty and danger.
Lu Tingxiao appeared at the top of the staircase, dressed in a dark suit that accentuated his handsome and imposing demeanor. "Assistant Lin, you’re here," he said, his voice calm and devoid of any emotion.
Lin Yue nodded, her voice trembling slightly. "Mr. Lu, I’m ready."
Lu Tingxiao led her through the foyer toward the study. The door to the study opened slowly, revealing an elegantly decorated room filled with bookshelves and a massive solid wood desk dominating the center.
"This is the material for tonight's meeting. I need you to familiarize yourself with it and prepare the meeting notes," Lu Tingxiao commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Lin Yue nodded and sat down at the desk, beginning to sift through the thick documents. Her eyes moved quickly over the text, but half of her mind was focused on searching for possible clues. She knew that her sister Lin Wan had been Mr. Lu's personal secretary and had once worked here; there must be something that could lead her to her sister's whereabouts.
Just then, light footsteps echoed from outside the door. Lin Yue looked up to see a young woman standing in the doorway, curiosity and wariness evident in her eyes. "Who are you?" The woman's voice was crisp, tinged with an air of unapproachable pride.
Lin Yue stood up, recognizing this as Lu Tingting, Lu Tingxiao's sister. "Hello, I’m Lin Yue, Mr. Lu’s assistant," she replied, striving to keep her tone even.
Lu Tingting scrutinized Lin Yue with a gaze that revealed a hint of distrust. "My brother’s assistant? I’ve never seen you before," she questioned skeptically.
Lin Yue’s heart tightened; they looked exactly alike—would she be discovered?
She knew this was a test. "I just arrived recently; Mr. Lu asked me to assist with some urgent business matters," she said, doing her best to maintain her composure.
"When she came, you were abroad. How could you have seen him?" The man's voice carried a hint of indulgence.
Lu Tingting's gaze lingered on Lin Yue for a moment before she slowly walked into the study and sat down on a sofa. "My brother is very busy with work, and I hope his assistant can truly help him," she said, her tone carrying a note of warning.
Lin Yue nodded, recognizing this as an opportunity. "I understand, and I will do my best," she replied, her voice firm.
Lu Tingting's gaze rested on Lin Yue for another moment before she stood up and walked toward the bookshelf. "There are many precious books on my brother's shelf; feel free to take a look if you're interested," she invited lightly.
Lin Yue nodded and approached the bookshelf, beginning to browse through the books. Her eyes fell upon an ancient diary adorned with intricate patterns on its cover. She gently opened it and discovered it contained records of some past events of the Lu Family.
Lu Tingting's gaze shifted to the diary in Lin Yue's hands, revealing a hint of surprise in her expression. "That diary belonged to my great-grandfather; it documents some of his experiences," she said, her voice tinged with nostalgia.
Lin Yue nodded, her gaze lingering on the diary for a moment before she closed it and placed it back on the shelf. "Thank you for sharing; I will cherish this opportunity," she expressed gratefully.
Lu Tingting's eyes remained on Lin Yue for a moment longer before she slowly exited the study. "I hope you can truly help my brother," she said, her voice filled with expectation.
Lin Yue nodded, aware that this was just the beginning. She returned to her desk and continued sifting through the documents. Her eyes moved quickly across the text, but her mind was occupied with thoughts of their earlier conversation.
Just then, Lu Tingxiao returned to the study, holding a document in his hand. "Assistant Lin, here are the supplementary materials for tonight's meeting; please take a look," he said, his tone serious.
Lin Yue nodded as she accepted the document and began reading. Her eyes scanned the text rapidly while her mind continued to reflect on her recent discoveries.
Lu Tingxiao's gaze lingered on Lin Yue for a moment before he slowly walked to the window, looking out at the night scene. "Assistant Lin, do you have any thoughts?" he asked, his voice carrying an air of inquiry.
Lin Yue lifted her head, knowing this was an opportunity. "Mr. Lu, I believe we can arrange the meeting from this perspective," she suggested, her voice carrying a hint of advice.
Lu Tingxiao's gaze lingered on Lin Yue for a moment before he slowly walked to the desk and began discussing matters with her.
Lu Tingxiao seemed to enjoy talking to her, speaking continuously without pause.
Only Lin Yue knew that she needed to find clues about her sister's disappearance as soon as possible.
