In the northwest of October, the heat was intense.
Xiao Yang was busy with his exploration research.
"Senior Brother, have some water first," his junior sister, Wang Peiqi, said as she handed him a bottle of water. She took his archaeological tools and squatted down to continue her research.
Xiao Yang took a sip of water, glanced at his watch, and hurried off to find his mentor to discuss the latest developments in their archaeological work.
His mentor looked at him with satisfaction and encouraged, "Xiao, you've finally come out of your shell."
Xiao Yang smiled but said nothing.
The mentor patted him on the shoulder and asked, "So, what do you think of our junior sister?"
Xiao Yang paused for a moment and replied, "Mentor, please don't joke around."
"I'm not joking; I'm trying to set you up. Our junior sister is a good girl. If you two can get together, I would be happy."
"Thank you for your kind words, but right now I'm solely focused on archaeological research and have no thoughts of dating," Xiao Yang politely declined his mentor's good intentions.
The mentor sighed and said, "Alright then, you young people can decide for yourselves."
A month later, the Archaeological Project concluded successfully. The Research Team made significant gains. After giving interviews, everyone set off on their way home.
Due to the remote location of the archaeological site, Xiao Yang's phone had been without signal for a long time. When he turned it on, he found numerous missed calls and messages, all from Fang Hui.
Fang Hui had sent him many messages:
"Xiao Yang, I'm not breaking up."
"Don't scare me; where are you?"
"Xiao Yang, I don't agree to break up."
“Xiao Yang, I’m really worried about you.”
Xiao Yang looked at the lines of text on his phone screen, somewhat surprised. During the days when he and Wei Zheng were vying for Fang Hui's attention, Fang Hui had never treated him this well. It seemed that only when one loses something do they realize its value. Unfortunately, he no longer cared.
He wheeled his suitcase out of the airport and was about to call a cab when a car pulled up in front of him. The window rolled down, revealing the face of his junior sister, Wang Peiqi.
“Senior Brother, I’ll give you a ride.”
Xiao Yang hesitated for a few seconds before getting into the passenger seat. Wang Peiqi didn’t ask him why he had taken so long to return or where he had been; instead, she chatted with him as usual.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Xiao Yang gazed out at the scenery, feeling calm. Perhaps this was what love was supposed to be like. He turned his head to look at Wang Peiqi’s profile and asked, “Junior Sister, would you like to hear my story?”
“If you want to tell it,” Wang Peiqi smiled at him.
Xiao Yang shared the events between him and Fang Hui with her, speaking in a calm tone as if recounting someone else’s story. After listening, Wang Peiqi fell silent for a long time before asking, “Has she contacted you since then?”
“Yeah,” Xiao Yang nodded.
“What are you planning to do?” Wang Peiqi glanced at him.
“We’ve moved on,” Xiao Yang replied with a smile.
Looking at the smile on his face, Wang Peiqi said, “That’s good.”
After returning to his dormitory, Fang Hui called again. Her voice was choked with emotion. “Xiao Yang, you finally answered the phone.”
Xiao Yang remained silent.
Fang Hui continued, "I've been worried about you, you know?"
"Is there still a chance for us?" Fang Hui asked cautiously.
"It's impossible now," Xiao Yang replied bluntly.
Before Fang Hui could respond, he hung up the phone and blocked and deleted Fang Hui's number.
