1. Returning from the Provincial Capital to the county, I thought I would finally end the long-distance separation and have more time to accompany my wife, Jiang Xiaoli, in watching our daughter grow up and sharing the joys of family life. Instead, I received her divorce agreement. She was transferring to a middle school in a nearby township to become the Vice Principal, and the Deputy Township Head, Jia Huairen, was her high school classmate and her first love.
When we went to the civil affairs bureau to handle the paperwork, our daughter Tiantian insisted on coming along. While Jiang Xiaoli went to the restroom, she leaned close to my ear and whispered, "Dad, they've been together for a long time!"
Hearing it from my daughter was a different experience than what I had anticipated! Along with the humiliation came anger! I felt an impulse to deal with that couple myself. But then Tiantian's next words broke through my defenses: "Dad, you need to be okay. I believe you can wait for better days! If you keep being like this, it will be hard for you to find someone else... Once you're better, I'll come back to you!"
I parted ways with Jiang Xiaoli on a note of mutual freedom. After that, whenever I visited my daughter in the countryside, it was always hurried: she was busy with classes, homework, and tutoring... so much so that I didn't even notice the helplessness and sadness in her eyes.
2. The head teacher of my daughter's class called me: "Mr. Hu, Tiantian is having some issues; please come to the county hospital as soon as possible!" Each time I saw Tiantian was brief; I could only ask her teacher, Teacher Jiang, about her academic situation.
"Tiantian is very hardworking, but her current family situation... doesn't seem conducive to her learning and growth..."
Indeed, no matter the reason for the divorce, children are always hurt by it. Family restructuring brings about more complex situations. Yet I could never have imagined what circumstances led my Tiantian to be sent to the hospital.
"What are you doing here?" Jiang Xiaoli blocked my way, looking flustered.
"Get out of my way! I want my daughter to tell me what happened! If anything happens to her, I'll make sure those who hurt her pay dearly!"
I must have looked terrifying; under my pressure, Jiang Xiaoli stepped aside.
"Old Hu, don't be too agitated. She's part of our family now; you should have some sense of boundaries," Jia Huairen said sarcastically as he stood in front of me.
Boundaries? Nonsense!
"I'm her biological father; I have the right to know!"
"Her guardian now is her mother!"
"Even if her mother married Stray Cats and Dogs, it won't change the fact that I'm her real father!"
"I'm sorry, but the situation is still under investigation. You cannot see the child for now. We will keep you updated on any developments!" Two individuals, dressed in plain clothes but clearly authoritative, approached me.
"I've already told you who I am, and I know who you are. What do you want? Is there a problem with me wanting to see my own child? If you won't let me, is there something you're trying to hide?"
I admit, I lost my composure.
But I believe no father can remain calm and collected upon hearing that their child is in trouble.
The older plainclothes officer pulled me aside. "Brother, we are also... not in control of the situation. If you force your way in, it won't achieve anything. Why bother?" He lowered his voice. "The child is in critical condition. Even if we let you through, you wouldn't be able to see her..."
My daughter is in critical condition!
What on earth happened?
Clearly, someone didn't want me to know the truth.
I thought of Teacher Jiang.
I called, but the call was immediately dropped.
After a long wait, a cryptic message came through: "There's a small restaurant across from the school. Go eat there and tell the owner your name..."
I chose to trust it.
The kindly old lady confirmed my identity and handed me a paper bag.
Inside was my daughter's diary.
