Liu Qingfeng fainted, and my parents looked as if they had lost their anchor, their faces pale and frozen in place.
Seeing this, I felt a strange calm wash over me. I took a deep breath and called out to my parents, "Quick, come help me untie him. I need to see what's going on."
While my father hesitated, my mother rushed over and lifted me down, loosening the ropes.
"Mom, let's first get Liu Daozhang onto the bed, then we can figure out what to do. If it gets serious, we can take him to the hospital."
It was only after my reminder that my parents reacted, and together we managed to carry Liu Daozhang back to the bed.
The reason I didn’t want to send Liu Daozhang directly to the hospital was that I sensed something was off. I had a nagging feeling that keeping him here might be better for him.
While Liu Daozhang remained unconscious, I quickly questioned my parents about why they had locked me up.
My mother started to speak, but my father interrupted her, and I noticed it.
I maintained a calm facade and casually said, "Mom, Liu Daozhang has coughed up blood. What if something happens to me too? You see, you haven't told me anything. If something goes wrong, how would I even know what happened?"
My mother was caught off guard by my words and immediately grew anxious. She rushed over and grasped my hand, saying in a worried tone, "Xi, you are my lifeline. You absolutely cannot get hurt."
Seizing the moment, I pressed on, "Mom, then please tell me what’s going on. I'm a college student; I understand more than you think. I might even be able to help."
Even in this day and age, there was still some preference for sons over daughters in the village. Very few girls managed to attend college. As their only daughter, my parents cherished me deeply; getting into university was their proudest achievement so far.
My words seemed to sway my mother. She walked over to my father and tugged at his sleeve while whispering something in his ear. The sound was too low for me to hear clearly.
After listening to her, my father hesitated for a moment before approaching me with a serious expression.
I was on the verge of losing my patience, urging, "Dad, hurry up!" I was worried that Liu Qingfeng would wake up, and that would be disastrous.
My father seemed to have made a significant decision as he said, "Liu Daozhang is saving you, using his life to save you."
Saving me? With his life? I was shocked. Why?
"Dad, please clarify," I said, feeling the seriousness etched on my face.
He fumbled in his pocket for a cigarette, and after several unsuccessful attempts with the lighter, I took it from him and lit it.
He thanked me before revealing an astonishing secret.
"Xi, Liu Daozhang is doing this to lift the Ghost Marriage on you."
I was taken aback. My Ghost Marriage?
With whom was I in a Ghost Marriage? Mu Xuanche? When did this happen? How come I had no idea?
I didn't dare interrupt; I waited for my father to continue.
It turned out that since my birth, my grandfather had arranged a deal for me, setting up a Ghost Marriage.
I asked what the terms of the deal were, but my father stammered and couldn't provide any clear details.
It was all arranged by my grandfather, and after he passed away, he entrusted it to Liu Qingfeng, who also seemed unsure about it.
My father only knew that it was related to the time of my birth, and according to my fate, I was prone to attracting ghosts that could harm my family. Therefore, my grandfather made a deal with Mu Xuanche, a powerful Male Ghost, with the purpose of having Mu Xuanche protect the Gu Family and ensure our safety.
The condition of this exchange was that when I came of age, I would marry Mu Xuanche.
Hearing this, I finally understood why Mu Xuanche called me "Wife" as soon as he saw me; there was indeed this backstory.
There was still something that had been troubling me for over a decade, so I seized the opportunity to ask.
“Dad, why was I locked up during the Ghost Festival?”
My palms began to sweat slightly as I held my breath and stared intently, my heart pounding.
“I’ll tell you,” said Liu Daozhang, who had somehow woken up behind me. His sudden appearance startled me. After a moment of recovery, I turned to look at him.
“Because you have the blood of that Evil Spirit in you. If you weren’t locked away in a Dark Room, the Evil Spirit would sense your presence. Your parents and I have worked hard for over a decade, using a fake Infant Spirit to deceive that Evil Spirit. As long as you survive past twenty, this Ghost Marriage will naturally dissolve. Who would have thought you would disrupt this Ritual and allow the Evil Spirit to find you?”
Although they did all these things for my sake, their deceitfulness made me feel a twinge of disgust. They had deceived Mu Xuanche for over ten years to keep him protecting our family; it felt unjust for Mu Xuanche.
My father helped Liu Qingfeng up and treated him with utmost respect. All of this was for me—who would willingly let their child enter a Ghost Marriage? My heart felt a bit sour at the thought.
Liu Qingfeng approached and stared at me, questioning, “Where did that strand of hair come from?”
Now that things had come to this point, I could only confess honestly.
After hearing my explanation, Liu Qingfeng tilted his head back and closed his eyes. In an instant, he seemed to age several years, murmuring, “Forget it, forget it; it’s all fate.”
"What do you mean, Daozhang?"
Liu Qingfeng said self-deprecatingly, "I can only blame my shallow understanding of the Dao. I didn't realize that hair wasn't from an Evil Spirit; it was just a tuft of Yellow Weasel fur used to create an Illusion Technique."
Yellow Weasel fur creating an Illusion Technique—did Mu Xuanche deceive me?
I wanted to speak, but after several attempts, the words just wouldn't come out.
"Old Gu, prepare yourself. Tonight will be the Ghost Marriage," Liu Daozhang said with a hint of resignation to my father.
Upon hearing this, my father's face immediately fell, and he asked in despair, "Is there really no other way?"
Liu Daozhang's expression turned grim, and his voice became particularly stern. "Look at your daughter's hand; it has already been poisoned by that Evil Spirit. If we don't proceed with the Ghost Marriage, she will die within seven days."
Liu Qingfeng's words hit us like a bombshell, leaving our family stunned. So that was the reason for the bloodstains on my hand.
Between death and Ghost Marriage, my parents chose Ghost Marriage without hesitation; nothing was more important than staying alive.
Once we returned home, my father went out to buy supplies while my mother helped me with my makeup.
The whole family waited for Liu Qingfeng to arrive and preside over the Ghost Marriage.
Just before the ceremony began, Liu Qingfeng arrived at our house, bringing two items with him.
One was an exquisite male Paper Man, unlike the usual Paper Men found in incense shops; this one was lifelike. The clothing was intricately detailed, and it seemed to have something written on it resembling birth dates and zodiac signs.
The other item was a pitch-black Big Rooster. He introduced it as a spirit medium to be used during the ceremony.
Black Rooster can summon the soul of Mu Xuanche only through the use of a black rooster, and the Ghost Marriage will take effect.
The night had fallen completely dark. I stood awkwardly in the hall, wearing the wedding dress my mother had hastily bought for me. My Heart raced, and my breathing became a bit hurried.
During Liu Qingfeng's ritual, no living person could speak; otherwise, the soul would be drawn away.
He held a syringe in his hand, and as the clock struck midnight, he plunged the needle sharply into the black rooster.
“Caw! Caw…” The black rooster cried out loudly.
I felt a Cold hand grasping mine.
Turning to look, I met Mu Xuanche's exquisitely beautiful face, his obsidian-like eyes gazing directly at me. A smile played at the corners of his mouth as he softly uttered two words.
“Wife.”
I felt my head start to spin, and I lost awareness of everything happening around me. After bowing twice more, I was swept into the room by Mu Xuanche. The once cramped Chamber now felt spacious.
“Wife, a moment of spring night is worth a thousand gold.”
His Deep, Magnetic voice echoed in my ears as I looked hazily at Mu Xuanche.
His lips delicately kissed every inch of skin on my neck, tender yet possessive. Waves of sensation coursed through me, causing my thoughts to spiral out of control.
“What… what are you doing?”
I could feel my voice trembling as I spoke.
"Let me make up for our wedding night."
Mu Xuanche's obsidian-like eyes were fixed on me with a burning intensity, his voice low and charming, carrying an air of dominance.
Before I could react, a massive shadow lunged at me once more, engulfing all light.
A wave of excruciating pain surged through my body.
I felt myself growing hotter and hotter, while his body was particularly cold. I kept moving closer to him, hoping to alleviate my warmth. My head was spinning, and I couldn't even comprehend what I was doing; all I wanted was to seek some relief.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against my earlobe as he whispered, "Here for you."
The ensuing storm was almost unbearable; I fainted several times only to regain consciousness again. It felt like a ship caught in turbulent waves, constantly rolling and swaying.
