"If the thing on your left is your tool to fend off Zombies, then? Can you survive?"
What the hell is this? Wang Chao cursed as he stared at the message flashing on his computer screen. He was just trying to watch a movie online, and now Zombies were popping up. Still, he glanced to his left at what was there—tissue paper.
Tissue paper against Zombies? Seriously? Was he supposed to wipe a Zombie's butt with it? Or wrap it up like a mummy? Nonsense! Wang Chao closed the pop-up and returned to his movie.
Wang Chao, an ordinary recent college graduate and a loser, had been struggling to find a job. After finally getting introduced to someone, she rejected him for not having a house or a car. So here he was on a weekend, stuck at home watching movies. What kind of world was this? He lamented that not having a house was one thing, but renting meant sharing with others.
The worst part was that his roommate was a beautiful girl. Just thinking about her made him feel even worse when he remembered his girlfriend who looked like "a disaster." He wouldn't have felt so down if he had someone like her. The most frustrating part was that she didn't have a boyfriend either. Wang Chao had asked her more than once why she didn't date anyone, but she just smiled at him, showing her dimples, making him feel like this was some kind of test from heaven.
Before long, the door to his room swung open. A blurry figure of a girl who had just woken up appeared before him. Her hair was messy, looking like a bundle of straw, and she wore only a T-shirt that somehow made her look incredibly cute. Wang Chao thought to himself how could someone look so good even when disheveled? This was his roommate, Yang Mengying. She casually sat on Wang Chao's bed and said, "I'm so hungry; let's make something to eat."
Wang Chao nodded helplessly. Having lived together for almost half a year now, he had practically become her personal chef. Stepping out of his room and opening the fridge revealed it was nearly empty. Yang Mengying seemed to remember something as she watched the movie and said, "Wang Chao, we don't have much food left; can you go buy some? Today, let's have hot pot! How does that sound?" Hot pot sounded great; what could be better than enjoying a steaming hot pot in winter?
Humming a tune, Wang Chao headed downstairs to the nearby market. This market had long operating hours and usually closed around eleven or midnight. After walking for a bit, he sensed something was off. What the hell? It didn’t feel right. He checked his watch; it was only around two in the afternoon—why was there no one around in the neighborhood?
Had everyone responded to some national call for exercise? What kind of joke was that? Were they all taking afternoon naps? Seriously? When did people in this neighborhood become so health-conscious? As he reached Building Five, even the elderly folks who usually played cards were nowhere to be seen. What happened? Did they stop playing cards and start dancing instead?
The more Wang Chao thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. Suddenly, he recalled the message that popped up on his computer earlier—could it be that there really was a Zombie outbreak? This felt too surreal! Confused but determined, Wang Chao decided to buy groceries first; even if Zombies were coming, he still needed to eat.
Arriving at the market sent chills down his spine—what the hell? In such a bustling place like this market, there wasn’t a soul in sight. Wang Chao concluded that something must have happened; maybe there was a fire in one of the buildings and everyone went to see what was happening? Nonsense! Historically speaking, markets were always the liveliest places; this eerie silence made him feel uneasy.
"Hey, old man, old lady, Dog Egg, Donkey? I'm here to buy some vegetables!" Wang Chao had been living here for a while and had gotten to know quite a few people.
No one answered.
"Damn it," Wang Chao continued deeper into the market. "Donkey? Donkey?" As he walked, he called out. Donkey was someone Wang Chao had met at the market; they were about the same age. After graduating from high school, Donkey started selling meat at his own stall. Since they were of similar age and Wang Chao often took Donkey out to have fun, they had developed a good friendship.
As Wang Chao shouted, he arrived at Donkey's meat shop. From the outside, it seemed empty. Wang Chao felt a sense of despair. Was he dreaming? He pinched his own face—ouch! Where is everyone? He stepped into the shop and finally saw someone squatting on the ground.
The person was squatting with their back to him, but Wang Chao recognized him immediately—it was Donkey. His messy hairstyle shone like fireflies in the night, making it hard not to recognize him. Seeing Donkey calmed Wang Chao's heart a little.
You brat, I called you so many times and you didn’t hear me because you were hiding here. Wang Chao tiptoed up behind Donkey and shouted, "Donkey, your grandpa is here!" He then kicked Donkey hard on his backside. Donkey stumbled forward from the unexpected kick.
Wang Chao burst into laughter.
But just then, Donkey slowly turned his head. Wang Chao's smile froze on his face at the sight. Donkey was covered in blood; even his mouth was smeared with it. In front of him lay what looked like some animal's organs. So that’s what he was doing while squatting on the ground—he was gnawing on that mess!
What the hell!
What the hell, hell, hell!
"Donkey? Don't scare me like that! Is today April Fool's Day? Haha, you're really good at this, especially that thing—it looks just like dog poop! Hahaha!" Wang Chao didn't even know what he was saying; given the current situation, this definitely didn’t seem fake.
Sure enough, Donkey opened his mouth wide and lunged at Wang Chao. He had no idea Donkey could be so strong; no wonder he was known for slaughtering pigs. Was he really going to die here? Damn it, I haven't even gotten married yet! I don't even have kids!
I can't die here!
Wang Chao shouted in his heart. But Donkey was at least as strong as a butcher, and his strength was on a completely different level from Wang Chao's. Just as Donkey's jaws were about to clamp down on Wang Chao's neck, he caught a glimpse of a Butcher's Knife not far from him. Damn it, I’ll fight back!
Wang Chao released his right hand, grabbed the Butcher's Knife, and swung it toward Donkey's neck. The desire to survive propelled Wang Chao's movements to be instantaneous and fluid, as if it were as simple as eating. At the same time, Donkey's teeth had already grazed Wang Chao's neck, meaning that if Wang Chao had been even a fraction of a second slower, he might have turned into a Zombie!
I’m alive...
Wang Chao sighed.
