In winter, darkness falls quickly. A strange occurrence had taken place in this neighborhood: most homes were shrouded in darkness. Wang Chao peered through the glass, feeling a chill run down his spine. He couldn't fathom what was happening, but he knew it was not safe to linger. He thought to himself, if a zombie outbreak had indeed occurred, what should he do?
Zombies were much like cockroaches. For instance, if you find one cockroach in your home, it means there are at least a thousand more lurking around. The same logic applied to zombies; there couldn't possibly be just one Donkey Zombie here. Furthermore, cockroaches had an incredible resilience; insecticides hardly worked unless you crushed them underfoot. Zombies were no different; unless you shot them in the head or decapitated them, they wouldn't stay dead.
This meant that the area was likely overrun with zombies!
Wang Chao glanced at the severed head of Donkey on the ground, feeling an indescribable mix of emotions. A person had left this world just like that. But death was irreversible; Wang Chao had understood this truth since he was very young.
Meanwhile, on a mysterious island.
"This number 618 has great potential," an old man remarked. Beside him stood a stunningly beautiful woman who lightly parted her lips and said, "Really? Just a loser." "Loser," the old man chuckled. "Indeed a loser, hahaha."
What was Wang Chao doing now?
Wang Chao was frantically shopping in a supermarket. Of course, "shopping" wasn't quite the right word since the entire supermarket was empty—not even a cashier in sight. The zombies had come, and what was most important? Food, water, and medicine. Television shows had depicted countless times how people would fight over a piece of bread, even abandoning their families in the process—truly ruthless.
Wang Chao wasn't foolish.
However, he found it puzzling that if a zombie outbreak had occurred, there should be hordes of zombies rushing towards the living. Yet here he was, not seeing any zombies or people around—not even a single cockroach. It felt eerie, Wang Chao thought. But there was no time to dwell on it; wherever they went didn't concern him—he was just glad to have some peace.
Pushing two shopping carts filled with food and bottled water, Wang Chao rushed home like the wind. In the elevator, he finally had time to call Yang Mengying: "Yang Mengying! Open the door! Open up!" Confused, Yang Mengying opened the door only to find nothing around her. Just then, the elevator doors opened, and Wang Chao burst in with his two shopping carts as if he were mad.
Fortunately, Yang Mengying managed to dodge out of the way; otherwise, she would have been knocked over!
After closing the door behind them, Wang Chao let out a huge sigh of relief.
But now came the question: where had all those people—or those zombies—gone?
Earlier that afternoon, Aunt Zhang was supposed to compete for the title of champion in a landlord game with Uncle Li and Uncle Wang on the fifth floor but inexplicably fell into a deep sleep. Liu Shafou had planned to take his Alaskan Shepherd to the park but suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed. Meanwhile, high school student Xiao Luo was preparing for his gaming session when he grabbed his mouse and felt as if the world were spinning; he lay down immediately.
Some people wake up without knowing what has happened. Others wake up but can't figure anything out; all that fills their minds is one word: "food!"
Wang Chao, of course, was unaware of these matters.
Yang Mengying looked at Wang Chao as if he were a gorilla. She asked, "You were supposed to buy groceries, how did you bring back so much stuff? Cookies, bread, bottled water, Amoxicillin, and... what’s this elastic body wrap?" As she spoke, Yang Mengying frowned. Wang Chao understood the differences between men and women and knew that women could be quite troublesome during certain days, which was why he had brought back this item. However, he couldn't distinguish between day-use and night-use products or whether they needed wings.
All he knew was that he had seen on television that with this item, one wouldn't have to worry about activities like cycling, swimming, or climbing mountains anymore—his mother would no longer have to worry about his studies!
Wang Chao patiently explained the situation. Then, as if remembering something important, he began to call his relatives, friends, or acquaintances one by one. Some didn’t answer; others thought Wang Chao was being foolish.
He had personally killed a zombie! Damn it, how could they not believe him!
In the bustling city now brightly lit at night, Yang Mengying thought Wang Chao had lost his mind. But given the current situation, it seemed Wang Chao's words were true.
A sound echoed in the empty neighborhood.
Then came a second sound, followed by a third. It was as if spring had arrived and little animals were waking from their winter slumber. The first zombie emerged from its home, followed by a second and a third. Soon enough, the once-empty neighborhood became crowded. They wandered aimlessly in the dark night like lost souls.
At that moment, when Yang Mengying tried to make another call, she found that the line was completely dead. Wang Chao understood; people were panicking and too many were trying to call at once for any calls to go through. He felt anxious too—what had happened to his family? His friends?
The only comfort was that he was not alone.
"What should we do? What should we do?" Yang Mengying paced anxiously. "I can't get through to my parents! They won't be in any trouble, will they?"
Wang Chao knew that Yang Mengying's parents worked at a hospital and were some sort of higher-ups there. They constantly pressured her to date promising young men from the hospital, which was why she had run away to live with a loser like him. Blood is thicker than water; no matter how much Yang Mengying complained about her parents normally, at this moment, those feelings couldn't be severed. Thinking of this made Wang Chao lower his head in sadness.
"It'll be fine," he said reassuringly. "There are plenty of places in the hospital where people can take refuge. Right now, you need to think about yourself."
"Really?" Yang Mengying's voice trembled slightly.
"It'll be fine!" Wang Chao patted her shoulder.
Yet Yang Mengying leaned against Wang Chao's chest.
The zombie outbreak was no joke; one could never know when they might get bitten and become one of them. Wang Chao would rather die than become one of those mindless corpses. To be honest, it wasn’t true that he wasn’t scared; after all, he wasn’t a special forces soldier nor did he possess any special skills—he had studied economics in college. Even if he tried to learn something like electrical work, he wouldn’t manage it.
What a waste! If he had known this day would come, he would have learned how to operate an excavator! Just imagine driving an excavator—nothing could stand in his way! That would truly be impressive!
As Wang Chao was lost in thought, a knock echoed through the door.
Startled, he released Yang Mengying and peered through the peephole. To his surprise, there was no one there. Could it be a legless zombie lying on the ground? The knocking continued, louder this time, but still no one was visible. Was his earlier guess coming true?
Pressing his ear against the door, he listened intently to the sounds outside. He could hear a little girl crying, "Mommy, I want to find Mommy, wuwu~~~~" Wang Chao recognized that voice; it belonged to the little girl from next door, Yiyi. Realizing this, he quickly opened the door.
The little girl rushed into Wang Chao's arms.
He closed the door behind her and looked her over carefully, relieved to see she had no visible injuries. Wiping her tears away, he asked gently, "Yiyi, what happened? Did something scary happen? Was there a strange uncle?"
Wang Chao thought that Yiyi probably didn't understand what a zombie was yet, so he rephrased his question.
"Like Uncle Wang? I didn't see any strange uncles," Yiyi replied innocently. Wang Chao felt his face flush; how had he become the strange uncle? Had she forgotten all the delicious treats he had bought for her?
"Yiyi, you stay here with this sister for a moment. I'm going to check on your sister!" Wang Chao said.
