The Hawaiian Islands, the most important stronghold of the United States in the Pacific, are also one of the world's top tourist destinations. Although the capital of Hawaii is located in Honolulu, Kapa City has captured more attention since its rise to prominence.
Funded by several large conglomerates, this water city on Hello Island took decades to expand and showcases the miracle of human effort.
The ultra-modern city contrasts beautifully with the natural pastoral scenery of Beside Island, creating a striking juxtaposition. When the Kapa project was first proposed, many opposed it, believing that such a modern city would ruin the natural beauty that belonged here.
However, once this magnificent water city was successfully established, the vast majority of dissenting voices fell silent.
On a seemingly endless super bridge spanning the sea, the salty sea breeze and warm sunlight accompanied the structure. Inside a speeding Luxury Bus, a rather attractive Black Female Tour Guide introduced the passengers in English tinged with a slight local accent.
"Crossing Century Bridge will bring us to our next destination, known as the Pearl of the Sea, Kapa City, also referred to as the Hawaiian Miracle."
Listening to the guide's introduction from her corner of the bus, Yang Xiaoyou absentmindedly played with her second-hand PSP and let out a sigh of frustration.
Finally, she had arrived; her life's greatest turning point was about to unfold here. This time, she was determined to change the trajectory of her future.
Casually tossing aside her second-hand PSP, Yang Xiaoyou rested her chin on one hand against the bus window, gazing at the dark outline that was gradually becoming visible ahead. Listening to the guide's explanations and the conversations among those Elites around her only added to her sense of oppression.
Yuying Middle School and Royal Academy of Basic Studies had a significant competitive relationship due to their founders. However, it was mostly healthy competition; after all, because of Royal Academy of Basic Studies' admission criteria, there wasn't much friction between their student bodies. Typically organized School Trips often saw both schools participating together.
This trip was no different. Due to their unique status, this School Trip represented something entirely different from those of ordinary schools. The students selected were not only academically outstanding but also came from notable backgrounds.
In essence, this trip was designed for these future students—destined for greater heights than their peers—to start expanding their networks and fully utilize the true value brought by both schools.
In terms of pure teaching quality, there were certainly other institutions that could match these two schools. However, their unique environment was something that others could not compare with.
Liang Wuxuan's opportunity for Yang Xiaoyou referred precisely to this; for someone like Yang Xiaoyou, who came from an average middle-class background, being able to connect with influential figures during this time would undoubtedly be beneficial for her future.
Yet at this moment, Yang Xiaoyou had no desire to seek out any potential benefactors.
While those true Elites were happily networking and expanding their connections since high school, they had little idea of what terrifying experiences awaited them in due time.
However, compared to others, it seemed that this batch of Elite students from both academies had survived—twenty-six of them—almost a third. This fact highlighted their exceptional qualities far beyond those of their peers.
Reflecting on this made Yang Xiaoyou feel somewhat self-deprecating. Although she had inexplicably gained these vast Memory Fragments, she realized that her character and temperament were still nowhere near comparable to that moment captured in her memories.
After gaining these slide-like memories, Yang Xiaoyou found himself passively maturing a bit. There were some things that he could never truly understand without experiencing them firsthand.
"However, I don't intend to go through those things," he thought. Having tasted the heart-wrenching pain that came with those memories, he couldn't imagine how the 'self' who had lived through them had managed to endure. The 'future' had to be changed!
Yet, Yang Xiaoyou understood that regardless of the circumstances, he had to get through this ordeal. If he wanted to live freely and not worry about offending someone powerful enough to make him disappear, he needed to hold onto his own strength.
Moreover, although he had not yet been targeted by those 'hostile' forces in this life, he was not willing to let it go unchallenged. Yang Xiaoyou did not think of himself as particularly magnanimous; since these fellows had brought him such painful memories, he would make them suffer even more.
Of course, due to his somewhat introverted nature, he would not take risks without absolute certainty. His greatest advantage—and his biggest trump card—was that he was currently in the shadows.
As long as he handled this situation well and followed the plan he had devised over the past month and a half, the road ahead would be much easier. Perhaps it would even give him the capital to fight against fate. This trip to Kapa City had to succeed.
"Now everyone can see the iconic building of Kapa City, the Umbrella Building. It is its presence that has allowed Kapa City to thrive in this region known for its heavy rainfall while also reducing some of the direct sunlight exposure," said the Black Female Tour Guide on the bus as they approached the twenty-kilometer-long bridge—the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world—pointing proudly at the enormous structure resembling a giant umbrella that covered half the city.
Many students inside the bus did not hold back their admiration for the magnificent yet peculiar building.
At that moment, a loud whirring sound from propellers came from behind the bus. Three beige military helicopters flew over the sea, racing toward the city ahead of them, creating waves on the water's surface with their powerful downwash.
"Hey? A few helicopters are flying toward the city. Those must be military," a male student remarked with a hint of surprise. Kapa City was an international entertainment and tourism metropolis. Although Hawaii had U.S. Military bases, theoretically, there should be few instances where military aircraft would fly directly into this water city to accommodate foreign tourists.
"The Black Hawk is a common model; many civilian organizations also possess them. However, for them to have flight rights over Kapa City means they are likely from a large company rather than military," another voice explained softly.
Yang Xiaoyou, sitting by the window, glanced at the speaker dismissively. The young man had a handsome appearance and a sunny demeanor that made him quite likable. He exuded a sense of maturity uncommon among their peers. Although his tone did not reveal much, Yang Xiaoyou noticed a slight hint of confusion on his face.
"At such a young age, having such quick reactions—no wonder he'll be able to handle big situations in the future. When I first arrived here, I didn't notice anything amiss," Yang Xiaoyou thought with a touch of self-deprecation. Due to his unique experiences in his memories, there wasn't much content regarding school aspects in those memory fragments.
The young man named Zhao Chen seemed to have some recollection and expressed his thoughts about their city's two prestigious schools.
"The convoy of Hummer business vehicles left the city in quite a hurry just now, and we haven't seen any vehicles leaving since then. Now with this situation... I wonder if something is going on," Zhao Chen hesitated for a moment before connecting what he saw on the road and finally frowned as he spoke in a consultative tone to Liang Wuxuan beside him.
During this school trip organized by two major universities, students were generally given full autonomy over their decisions without much interference from supervising teachers. As Vice President of the Student Council, Zhao Chen had every right to voice his opinions about this trip's itinerary.
Hearing this familiar conversation that matched his memories perfectly brought an odd expression to Yang Xiaoyou's face. It was too late to reconsider now; both ends of the only bridge connecting this city to the outside world were completely sealed off. He and his companions might be among the last batch of 'ordinary' tourists allowed into this city.
Yang Xiaoyou had considered giving them a heads-up, but setting aside the impact on his own plans, he figured that even if he told them, no one would pay attention to him, a passenger with no voice and no presence. He had tried that before.
"Citywide anti-terror drill?" Liang Wuxuan looked at the serious-faced soldier in front of him, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes. When they were entering the city on the bus, everyone on board had seen a long line of various vehicles at the exit, all of which were being stopped by another lane.
"Yes, we hope everyone can cooperate. It's best not to wander outside until it's over." Thanks to Liang Wuxuan's striking appearance, the serious soldier seemed slightly more accommodating.
At that moment, another bus carrying students from Royal High School slowly pulled up beside them, following the bus from Yuying Middle School.
Seeing that bus, which he had tampered with but still managed to catch this 'last ride,' Yang Xiaoyou let out a helpless sigh and tightened his grip on his travel bag.
When a beautiful girl with a playful ponytail and long legs stepped off the bus, radiating youthful energy, Yang Xiaoyou steeled himself and walked over. Ignoring the surprised expressions of others, he dragged her aside.
"What’s going on?" the beautiful girl protested as she struggled against him. Although she appeared reluctant and was putting up a fight, she ultimately followed Yang Xiaoyou to a less crowded spot.
Looking at the girl in front of him who wrinkled her nose in discontent, Yang Xiaoyou felt a mix of emotions. Aside from a few like-minded friends, he didn't have many true friends.
Chen Hao, who had been recruited as a pilot, was one; this girl before him, who could almost rival Liang Wuxuan in looks, was another. The three of them had grown up together playing in the mud as childhood friends, but since middle school began, their contact had dwindled significantly.
