On January 16, 8 AD, in a Southeast Asian country.
The shrill sound of the alarm echoed throughout the basement, piercing like glass scraping against your ears, driving one to the brink of madness. Yet the alarm continued its relentless wail, as if it wanted everyone to know of its existence. Of course, everyone was aware of it, but they all wished to forget it, for its ringing signaled that trouble was near.
“Oh, damn it! What’s going on?” Lin Yi pounded on the tempered glass beside him, his face filled with frustration.
“They're probably causing trouble again,” a blonde beauty winked at Lin Yi before burying her head back into her work.
“Everyone, please remain calm. There’s been a minor issue over at Laboratory One, but the safety personnel will handle it,” the rotund Section Chief Nock entered with a broad smile, explaining to the crowd.
“Section Chief, what exactly is happening?” Ika asked, swiveling in her chair with an eager expression directed at Nock.
Nock leaned back slightly, preparing to speak when suddenly his expression changed. He turned and walked away without a word.
“What’s wrong with our dear Chief? Ika, did you scare him?” Marin said with a peculiar smile as he set down his work.
Lin Yi sighed softly, crossing his hands behind his head and leaning back against the leather chair.
“It seems our Lin Team Leader is also deep in thought,” Marin remarked when Ika didn’t respond to his question, turning his attention to Lin Yi instead.
“No, I’m just trying to figure out what to have for lunch. But after thinking for a while, I still can’t decide, so naturally my mood is a bit heavy,” Lin Yi chuckled lightly before shifting his gaze back to the computer in front of him.
With elevated access privileges, several blood-red words flashed on Lin Yi's screen against a black background, creating a suffocating sense of bloodthirstiness. After hesitating for a moment, he clicked on the words with his mouse, prompting a dialogue box: Please enter the first-level authorization password. Lin Yi thought briefly and quickly typed in a long string of numbers, letters, and symbols.
“Password entered successfully. Please proceed with fingerprint verification.” Lin Yi glanced at the connected scanner beside the computer and quietly pressed his index finger onto it.
“Fingerprint verification successful. Please select the content you wish to view.” Lin Yi then clicked on the video surveillance option, continuing the repetitive actions of entering passwords and verifying fingerprints.
"Please select the area you wish to view." The computer screen then displayed a line of text. Lin Yi slightly closed his eyes and clicked on Laboratory.
"I'm sorry, you do not have permission to view this area." A line of blood-red text suddenly appeared on the computer, and then the webpage automatically closed, returning to the desktop. Lin Yi's heart sank; something felt off. How could he, as the project leader, be unable to access even a video? Who was changing his permissions? Was something unspeakable happening in the Laboratory at that moment?
Lin Yi suddenly stood up, startling the two colleagues sitting across from him, who both turned to look at him in surprise.
"Boss, what are you doing?" Marin asked, confusion evident in his eyes.
"I'm going out to take a look; you all keep working," Lin Yi said, trying hard to calm his emotions and putting on what he believed was a charming smile.
Suppressing his feelings, Lin Yi recalled that the alarm had come from Laboratory One. Now that he suddenly found himself without access to this Laboratory, it must mean there was an issue that couldn't be resolved and that he wasn't meant to know about. Curiosity is a natural human trait; the more one is forbidden from knowing something, the more one tries to understand it. Sometimes curiosity can lead to trouble; indeed, we can be too curious at times. However, from another perspective, Lin Yi felt it was his responsibility as a leader to address any anomalies rather than remain silent.
"I'm sorry, permissions have been changed; you do not have access to this area." After undergoing pupil and fingerprint scans, Lin Yi thought he could check the situation on-site but received this cold response from the electronic Intelligent System.
"Damn!" Lin Yi slammed his fist against the pale metal wall beside him. His previously good mood was shattered by this unexpected incident, leading him to reevaluate his own importance. He thought back to how he had graduated from Lion City Institute of Advanced Biology and immediately joined this seemingly unremarkable yet highly regarded Biological Research Institute among those in the know. In less than two years, he had become a project leader—an impressive achievement for someone so young. Yet now, due to a sudden incident, Lin Yi felt as if he were not as significant as he had believed.
As humanity continues to evolve and technology advances rapidly, various strange new problems also emerge. Among them, new types of viruses pose a greater concern than nuclear deterrence. The Laboratory One at Lin Yi's institute specializes in researching biological antiviral properties and developing corresponding countermeasures. Of course, whether such a large research institute also investigates other matters remains unknown to him. Lin Yi simply couldn't fathom why he was suddenly barred from entering the Laboratory after it had just encountered an issue. However, rules are rules; since he couldn't enter, he had no choice but to leave for now. He would ask Section Chief about it later; surely that kind-hearted Section Chief would reveal the truth.
As he quickly walked down the corridor, a sudden piercing scream reached his ears. Lin Yi's heart raced with alarm as he turned back for a glance. In that brief moment, he saw Section Chief Nock's plump figure hurriedly exiting Laboratory One. Before Lin Yi could take in anything else, the doors of the Laboratory swiftly closed behind Nock.
"Section Chief! What happened?" Lin Yi called out as he rushed over.
"Lin! You're here?" Nock said while wiping sweat from his forehead, looking as if he had just gone through a strenuous ordeal.
"What happened? Why am I..." Seeing Nock's somewhat flustered appearance only heightened Lin Yi's urgency to understand what had transpired.
"Nothing major, just a test subject that might have had an overdose of the serum. It suddenly became agitated, broke a steel restraint, and even injured one of the lab technicians," Nock said, lowering his head and breathing heavily.
"What happened next? Was the injury serious?" Nock had a good relationship with his colleagues, and hearing that someone was hurt made him genuinely concerned.
By this time, Nock had wiped away the sweat and raised his chubby arm to pat Lin Yi on the shoulder with a smile. "Don't worry, our automated defense system isn't just for show. It immediately identified the attacking test subject and neutralized it."
"I didn't know the laboratory had an automated defense system," Lin Yi said, slightly taken aback. It was clear he was unaware of this detail, but he understood it was reasonable enough not to be too surprised.
"Oh, you didn't know? That makes sense; you've only been here for two years. I've been here for over a decade and have only seen this happen three times."
"What were those three times?" Lin Yi's curiosity got the better of him, and he blurted out the question.
"We can talk about that later. Look, it's almost time; let's grab something to eat! I heard today's menu is pretty good!" Nock smacked his lips as if he had just enjoyed some delicious food.
"Come on, tell me! We still have several minutes before we clock out!" Lin Yi knew that this Section Chief was friendly, so he wasn't worried about pushing for more information.
"Let's go!" Nock's expression suddenly changed, and he grabbed Lin Yi and headed toward the end of the hallway.
Lin Yi was caught off guard by Nock's abrupt shift in demeanor and didn’t react quickly enough to resist being pulled along for several steps.
"Section Chief, isn't it bad for us to be seen like this? I can walk on my own," Lin Yi chuckled as he wriggled free from Nock's grip.
"Some things you'll understand later," Nock said, quickly regaining his composure.
"No need to wait until later. Tonight, I'll treat you to dinner at Eastern Dream. We can chat while we eat."
"Hmm? Don't try to bribe the boss," Nock said, pointing at Lin Yi with a sly grin.
"Where would I get the idea? This is just a way to strengthen camaraderie among colleagues."
"Well, that's good then."
As the two chatted, they had already walked out to the corridor outside. However, Lin Yi was somewhat surprised by the three individuals in black suits approaching them. Among them were two men and one woman. The man in his thirties at the front was clearly the leader, sporting a bald head and sunglasses, with a muscular physique that exuded strength. The slightly shorter man on the left appeared to be around twenty-five or twenty-six, resembling a younger version of the sunglasses-wearing man, though he wasn't wearing any shades. The woman on the right had long hair tied up like black satin, fair skin, and large eyes that sparkled like black jewels. Her long legs complemented her tight-fitting outfit, showcasing an impressive figure.
"Wen? What are you doing here?" Lin Yi clearly recognized the black-haired woman.
The woman named Wen glanced at Lin Yi and smiled lightly, her cherry lips parting as if she was about to say something. Suddenly, the bald man spoke in a low voice, "Li Qiweng, work comes first!"
Li Qiweng winked at Lin Yi before returning to her icy demeanor. "Yes, boss!"
The group quickly brushed past them, and Lin Yi noticed they were heading into Laboratory One, raising more questions in his mind. Just then, Nock burst out laughing. "Haha, time to clock out! Let's go eat." Lin Yi felt a twinge of annoyance at Nock's laughter. He knew Li Qiweng's profession all too well; now she was at his workplace—this was no trivial matter. In this era where crisis consciousness was fading, he suddenly felt a sense of unease creeping in. No matter what, he needed to get to the bottom of this.
"Section Chief, I think you..."
"Young man, some things are better left unknown," Nock's expression shifted as he abruptly interrupted Lin Yi before he could continue.
Lin Yi was self-aware enough to recognize that since the Section Chief didn't want to discuss it further, he should refrain from pressing on. However, being persistent by nature, he resolved that he would uncover the truth behind this situation eventually.
