"Alright, they're coming. We can go now. Follow me and don't get lost." The two of them had already run to the end of the alley. Ahead was a wall about three meters high. As Li Qiweng approached the wall, he took a few steps back for a running start, then leaped gracefully, grabbing the edge of the wall with both hands and pulling himself up. 0

Lin Yi couldn't help but admire his agility. He took a few steps back as well and jumped. Everything felt like it was happening in slow motion as he got closer to the wall, and a sense of pride swelled within him. Just as he was supposed to reach for the edge, he momentarily lost focus. When he realized he was falling, it was too late. In an instant of panic, however, Lin Yi's reflexes kicked in; as he fell, he kicked off the side of the wall and managed to grab the edge with both hands. 0

At that moment, a loud screeching sound came from behind him. Lin Yi turned just in time to feel a tight grip on his wrist before being flung outwards. In that split second, something struck his head, and everything went dark. 0

"Damn it! So close to catching him!" The young Major clenched his fists in frustration, but his determined expression conveyed his resolve to everyone around him—a soldier's commitment to completing the mission. 0

When Lin Yi woke up, he didn't find himself questioning where he was; this was his home, after all, and he was very familiar with it. 0

Li Qiweng stood beside him. Upon seeing him awake, a hint of relief crossed her weary face. However, before Lin Yi could ask anything, he noticed Li Qiweng seemed to collapse weakly beside the bed. 0

"Wen!" Lin Yi's heart raced at the sight, fearing something serious had happened to her. Ignoring his own fatigue from just waking up, he hurriedly lifted the covers and helped her onto the bed. 0

In his panic, Lin Yi failed to realize that Li Qiweng's condition was due to the Potential Gene Drug she had taken. Once he calmed down and pieced together what had happened, memories of the beach incident flooded back—images that left him feeling anxious and unsettled. The Gene Drug that consumed human corpses and the military's ruthless slaughter were too much for him to process at once. But most haunting was what transpired on Sunshine Beach; it might become a nightmare that would haunt him for life. 0

While Li Qiweng rested, Lin Yi opened his computer to search for useful information. As soon as he logged into his email, he received a message from the board of directors of the research institute. Although Lin Yi wasn't entirely clear on how the institute was structured, he knew that the board held control over it. 0

Lin Yi felt a chill run down his spine as he opened the email: Due to Mr. Lin Yi's health issues, the board has decided to grant him special permission to recuperate at home. Future work arrangements for Mr. Lin Yi will be made at the board's discretion. 0

Though puzzled by why the board was so formal about allowing him to rest at home when he didn't feel ill at all—especially considering it had only been a little over an hour since the beach incident—Lin Yi understood that this "illness" was somehow connected to narrowly escaping death. The military's swift response and merciless collective slaughter would surely cause an uproar in this so-called Civilized World. Yet surprisingly, there was no mention online about what had happened on the beach; it was as if it had never occurred. 0

Feeling increasingly suffocated by anxiety, Lin Yi decided to step outside for some fresh air. However, as soon as he opened the door, two shadowy figures blocked his path. Squinting in annoyance at their expressionless faces—two men in suits resembling statues—he felt frustrated. 0

The three remained silent for several moments until one of them—a dark-skinned man—finally spoke: "We are from the National Security Bureau and have been ordered to protect you." After delivering this message, he fell silent again. 0

No matter how powerful an individual might be, opposing a nation meant certain death. Lin Yi understood this all too well; despite feeling disgruntled, he remained rational and asked after a brief pause: "Why?" 0

"No comment," replied the dark-skinned man firmly. Lin Yi realized there would be no further answers forthcoming but still pressed on: "When can I go outside?" This time there was no response at all; perhaps no one knew when they would be free again. 0

Lin Yi sighed with a bitter smile; fortunately, he remained optimistic. Even though circumstances seemed dire for him now, as long as he was alive, there was still hope for change. Boredom led him to browse news online only to discover that Lion City had been placed under martial law due to suspected terrorists planning suicide attacks against civilians. Shaking his head in disbelief at how even news outlets were unwilling to report the truth made it clear that things were far more serious than anyone could imagine. But why would an inconspicuous citizen like him receive such treatment? Little did Lin Yi know that aside from himself, all those ordinary citizens who had witnessed those Zombies on the beach had already become vengeful spirits. 0

A week passed quickly; Lin Yi hadn't been to work in seven days. Supplies were delivered regularly without fail. Meanwhile, Li Qiweng seemed free to come and go as she pleased; whenever Lin Yi asked her about events outside, she always evaded his questions as if hiding something significant. Aware of her special status made it difficult for him to press further; nonetheless, his unease continued to grow stronger each day. 0

The entire city had entered a state of heightened alert, and no one was allowed to go out freely. Lin Yi looked through the window and saw soldiers in armored vehicles everywhere on the street, an unbelievable sight during peacetime. All he could do now was sleep, eat, and stare blankly at home. 0

Li Qiweng had gone to work, leaving Lin Yi bored and browsing the internet for movies, but there was nothing interesting to watch. Although he tried to contact his colleagues to inquire about the situation, he soon discovered that his communications were also being monitored; many of his messages were cut off before he could finish. Frustrated, Lin Yi could only pass the time aimlessly online. 0

"Doo doo~" A cute anime avatar flashed in the corner of his computer screen. 0

"Is there a message?" Lin Yi murmured to himself. He clicked on the flashing avatar. During this time, aside from Wen keeping him company, he had been completely cut off from the outside world. It was indeed exciting to see someone reaching out to him. 0

"Hello, Uncle!" 0

Lin Yi felt a bit annoyed; the first thing that popped up was "Hello, Uncle." He couldn't recall having any nephews or nieces. 0

"Who are you?" Lin Yi typed back, genuinely puzzled about when he might have had a nephew. 0

"Please call me Winnie Flower, hehe~" The online friend introduced herself cheerfully. 0

"How old are you, friend?" Lin Yi felt a sudden spark of joy and teased back lightly. 0

"I'm fourteen years old, ten years younger than you, hehe~" 0

"Cough cough cough, is that so?" Although Lin Yi usually considered himself approachable to people of all ages, he wasn't quite sure how to chat with a friend like this. 0

"You’re just jealous that I'm younger than you! Right, Uncle!" The typing speed from the other side was quick. 0

"Don't call me Uncle; I'm still very young!" Following the principle of having nothing better to do, Lin Yi continued chatting with Winnie Flower to pass the time. 0

"Okay then, what’s your name, Uncle?" 0

Lin Yi was about to type his real name but thought that since she wasn't using her real name either, he should come up with a nickname for himself. Reflecting on his current activities—eating, sleeping, and staring blankly—Lin Yi proudly typed out a name he thought was quite fitting: "Koala." 0

"Oh, so it's Koala Uncle! I wonder what kind of relationship you have with the Koala next door?" 0

Lin Yi was momentarily speechless, likely caught off guard by an Australian girl. However, given his current situation, he wasn't too concerned about being mocked. 0

"Flower, you know!" Even though he was teased by a girl, his personality didn't allow him to feel embarrassed; instead, he continued to chat casually with Winnie Flower. 0

After a period of silence on the other end, just as Lin Yi was about to lose his patience waiting, Winnie Flower finally sent a message: "I have things to do now. And don’t call me Flower; it sounds so cheesy!" 0

"Flower!" Without thinking twice, Lin Yi sent the message, but there was no further reply from her. 0

Just when Lin Yi was feeling bored, the long-absent Nock sent him an email: The research institute has decided to send you to Africa for an important experiment. I hope you won’t decline. 0

Lin Yi realized he was finally going to be free and didn’t care where he was going. He replied directly: No problem, this is my career! 0

"We're throwing a farewell banquet for you tonight at Eastern Dream. The head of the research institute and some big shots from the board will come personally to see you off," Nock quickly replied. 0

For Lin Yi, being able to go out and move freely was fantastic. However, he couldn't help but wonder why such high-profile figures would come to see him off. 0

"This is quite extravagant!" Lin Yi muttered, but there was no response from Nock. 0

A sense of unease crept into Lin Yi's mind; he felt that he needed to see things for himself to understand what was going on. So even though he hesitated a bit, he decided it was necessary to go. Of course, before leaving, he made sure to leave a note for Wen, considering she was at work and it wouldn’t be appropriate to disturb her. He placed the note prominently on his computer screen. 0
