I held my breath, waiting for them to finish speaking. After about two minutes, the stranger left the office.
Now was the moment. Based on their conversation, we had to obtain the evidence tonight; otherwise, tomorrow there would be nothing left.
Once the footsteps completely faded away, I quietly approached the office. The door was slightly ajar, and through the gap, I could see Wang Zhiyuan staring blankly at his computer.
At that moment, my earpiece crackled to life with Li Jun's urgent voice: "Not good! A team just came in through the front door, fully armed. They don't look like security!"
A jolt of panic shot through me, but there was no time to retreat now. I had to stick to the plan.
Gently pushing the door open, I used the stun gun I had prepared earlier to take down Wang Zhiyuan. There was no time to waste; I needed to get the data before that team arrived.
Wang Zhiyuan's pupils were still functional, so I used his retinal recognition to access his security permissions. The computer screen displayed several ongoing file deletion processes.
"I'm copying the data," I messaged Zhang Lei while keeping an ear out for any sounds from outside.
"Hurry up! That team is already upstairs!" Li Jun's voice was laced with urgency.
Just then, I noticed a strange detail: a ventilator sitting on Wang Zhiyuan's desk.
This discovery instantly reminded me of the "Cleaner." Could it be...
"Bang!" The office door was kicked open, and five fully armed men stormed in. The leader removed his mask, revealing an unexpected face:
"Long time no see, Engineer Gao," he said.
It was Li Wei. A mocking smile spread across his face. "Looks like you're still too naive."
"Don't make any rash moves." Li Wei raised his gun and slowly approached. "Hand over the USB Drive, and I might consider letting you go."
I locked eyes with him. "So from the very beginning, you were the mole?"
"Not just a mole," Li Wei chuckled. "Who do you think is the real mastermind behind this plan? Wang Zhiyuan? He's just a fool willing to do anything for money."
The office fell into a heavy silence. My mind raced as I tried to untangle this web within a web: Li Wei had initially sought my help to lead me into investigating this matter. He wanted to ensure our focus remained on Wang Zhiyuan.
"That press conference was also your doing, wasn't it?" I continued to buy time. The data transfer still needed thirty seconds.
"That's right." Li Wei looked quite pleased with himself. "To create a big splash in the Origin Awakening World, we needed the right stage. Wang Zhiyuan organized the press conference, implanted the Backdoor Program, while I handled things from the shadows."
"The mysterious Cleaner was arranged by you too?"
Li Wei paused for a moment. "What Cleaner?"
It seemed there was a third party involved that neither of us knew about.
"Time's up." Li Wei waved his gun impatiently. "Give me the USB Drive. After all these years of cooperation, I don't want to resort to violence."
"Cooperation?" I scoffed. "You used my trust to set this trap for me. Is this what you call cooperation?"
"You can't blame me," Li Wei's gaze turned sharp. "Who told you to be so righteous? We in IT have all done some shady business at one point or another. But you, you go around preaching about professional ethics all day long. Do you know what I hate most about you? It's that condescending moral attitude!"
Suddenly, it dawned on me. He had always seen me as a thorn in his side. To him, my existence was a denial of his values.
"The things you said to Wang Zhiyuan were just an act, weren't they?" I asked. "About cleaning the servers tomorrow..."
"Of course it's true," Li Wei sneered. "But not tomorrow—right now. This building is already under my control, and in ten minutes, all the servers will be completely wiped. By then, even if the police come, they won't find any evidence."
