The two embraced gently, and Sofia's body trembled slightly. Becky felt the deep-seated pain within her, so she softly patted Sofia's back, as if conveying some form of comfort and support. In that moment, silence spoke louder than words.
When she released her hold and looked at Sofia's weary face, a wave of compassion surged within Becky. Sofia had once been so strong and gentle, but now her face was etched with exhaustion and anxiety, her eyes filled with unease and helplessness. Becky sighed softly, unable to keep her gaze on Sofia any longer, as if she did not want to witness this version of her friend.
"Sofia..." Becky began, her voice low and heavy with suppressed emotion. "Regarding Christopher, you can rest assured that the investigation unit has looked into it thoroughly. According to their findings, there are no further issues concerning Ethan's case."
Sofia furrowed her brow slightly, listening quietly.
Becky continued to explain, "The prosecution has also reviewed the prescriptions Ethan provided for Christopher and contacted his family and friends. Their testimonies confirm that there was no medical negligence on Ethan's part during the treatment process. Christopher's death is unrelated to Ethan." Her tone carried a hint of helplessness and forced reassurance, as if trying to let Sofia know that this matter would no longer pose a legal threat to Ethan.
Sofia nodded silently. Although a weight had been lifted from her heart, the pressure still lingered because Ethan's situation was far more complex than she could comprehend.
After a moment, Sofia raised her head and asked softly, "And... what about you, Becky? After all, you attacked Christopher." Her voice held a note of concern, worried that Becky might bear unnecessary responsibility because of it.
Upon hearing the question, Becky smiled faintly, though that smile was tinged with subtle fatigue and resignation. "They’ve looked into my situation as well..." She sighed lightly, recalling the fear and chaos of that moment. "I was just acting in self-defense; I did hit him with a chair, but according to the investigation results, Christopher's injuries were already beyond saving before I acted." She paused for a moment before gently shaking her head. "The investigation unit believes I merely overreacted in defense and won’t be pressing any charges against me."
Sofia’s brow relaxed slightly as she nodded in response, feeling a bit of relief knowing that at least Becky wouldn’t be dragged into deeper trouble because of this incident.
Becky looked at Sofia, sadness flickering in her eyes. "Sofia... I'm truly sorry about Ethan. I know how much you're hurting right now, but... all we can do is be there for him and support him." Her voice was heavy with weight and helplessness because she understood that facing Ethan's current situation left everyone feeling powerless.
After a brief silence between them, Sofia quietly replied, "I will..." Her voice was faint, as if responding to an unavoidable fate.
Sofia then softly asked Becky, "Is Ethan okay?" Her tone was cautious and trembled slightly, as if afraid to hear an unbearable answer.
Becky’s expression darkened slightly, her brows furrowing unconsciously as she pondered how to respond. Her lips pressed together lightly, caught in hesitation. She knew all too well that this was not an easy question to answer, especially in front of Sofia.
Seeing this, Sofia gently reached out and patted Becky’s shoulder, her tone soft yet firm. “Just tell me the truth, Becky. I’m not unaware of the situation.”
At these words, a fleeting smile of pain crossed Becky’s face, her lips curving into a helpless arc. “Ethan… he’s still the same,” she said softly, her voice heavy with sorrow and resignation.
She looked at Sofia with eyes full of sadness and continued, “He’s terrified of anyone’s presence, almost wrapping his face tightly all day as if he’s trying to escape something. He doesn’t trust anyone, whether it’s medical staff or familiar faces. And… he often gets angry at those unknown hallucinations around him, as if he’s arguing with something invisible.” Becky’s tone conveyed a sense of powerlessness, as if she couldn’t comprehend the extent of the damage these hallucinations were inflicting on Ethan.
Listening to this, Sofia felt as though her heart had been pierced. She bit her lip but remained silent, struggling to contain her emotions.
Becky sighed and added, “The nurses mentioned that sometimes… when Ethan is asleep, he calls out your name.” At this point, her voice became even softer, as if she were carefully choosing each word to spare Sofia from further pain.
Upon hearing this, Sofia's body trembled suddenly, a sharp pain piercing her chest as if something had collapsed within her. Her eyes reddened slightly, tears threatening to spill over, but she took a deep breath and fought to calm herself.
After a brief silence, Sofia finally managed to suppress her emotions and lifted her head, her expression still strong. Despite the turmoil within her heart, she refused to break down at that moment. She knew this was not the time for weakness; Ethan needed her—though she didn’t know how to help him, she had to remain steadfast.
“I understand… thank you, Becky,” Sofia said softly. Her voice was light yet filled with unspoken determination.
Becky reached out again and gently embraced Sofia. Her body trembled slightly as she suppressed her own feelings; her voice began to choke with emotion. “Oh my God… why is this happening? I really… feel so sorry for you both…” Her words came out in fragments as she struggled to find comforting language but ultimately could not hide her helplessness. “I don’t know what to say…”
Listening to Becky’s words made Sofia's heart ache. She looked at this once-vibrant friend who had now been pulled into the deep shadows cast by Ethan’s plight. Becky’s pain and guilt were laid bare at that moment, leaving Sofia momentarily stunned—this burden was not one they should have to bear.
After a brief silence, Sofia gently returned the embrace, softly patting Becky’s back as if offering some form of comfort. Yet deep down inside, Sofia could not quell her own unease. Her gaze grew increasingly hollow as confusion and despair filled her heart—questions swirled in her mind: What was happening? What had happened to Ethan? How did it all begin?
Sofia took a deep breath, striving to remain calm, but she knew that this question had entangled her for far too long. No matter how hard she tried to find answers, the path ahead seemed only to grow more obscure, as if drawn into an endless abyss by some invisible force.
Deep within her heart, Sofia had long understood—the source of it all was a darkness. That unreachable darkness was consuming everything she loved, dragging Ethan into a world she could not comprehend. All she could do was wait endlessly, piecing together the vague clues, hoping that one day she would see the end of this nightmare.
She silently held Becky close, her lips curling slightly into a faint smile, even though that smile was filled with helplessness.
