"Take this fifty and be careful with it. Don't buy too much; four meat dishes, four vegetable dishes, and a soup will be enough. Oh, and I love seafood, so don't forget that."
This was my first visit to Shen Chengzhou's home after agreeing to his marriage proposal, and it just so happened to be his mother's birthday.
Auntie, who always prided herself on being frugal, refused to accept my gift no matter what. She even insisted that I cancel the reservation I had made at a restaurant.
I understood that cooking could be tedious and exhausting, and I didn't want Auntie to have to work so hard on her birthday. Just as I was about to persuade her again, Li Xiaomei smiled at me and said, " Anan, Auntie wants to try your cooking today."
Before I could respond, Shen Chengzhou chimed in, "Don't worry, Mom. Anan is a great cook. You can relax today and let her handle it."
Caught in their back-and-forth, I was reluctantly assigned this daunting task.
With the rising prices of ingredients, fifty yuan would barely buy some vegetables and chicken; getting seafood along with eight dishes and a soup seemed nearly impossible.
To save money, I went from stall to stall comparing prices. Within an hour, I had asked every vendor in the market.
A few grumpy shopkeepers grew irritated with my inquiries, thinking I was a competitor trying to undercut them, and hurled insults my way.
Several times I considered giving up, but wanting to leave a good impression on Li Xiaomei pushed me to finish my shopping.
In order to buy seafood, I didn't even save money for transportation and ended up carrying heavy bags all the way back from the market.
As soon as Li Xiaomei walked in, she started flipping through the dishes in my hands, praising me while tying an apron around my waist.
Without a moment's pause, I immediately began washing, preparing, and chopping vegetables. After a flurry of activity, eight dishes and a soup were finally served on the table.
But just when I was pouring drinks, Li Xiaomei unexpectedly replaced my bowls and chopsticks with disposable utensils.
The thought of all my hard work being treated this way sent a chill down my spine.
Noticing my expression change, Li Xiaomei quickly explained, "Don't take it the wrong way. My aunt has a serious obsession with cleanliness. Normally, our family uses separate utensils when we eat. Please don’t think too much about it."
Looking around at the messy and chaotic environment of the house, I found it hard to believe this was the home of someone with such a phobia.
Before I could respond, a loud banging on the door interrupted us: "Open up! Damn it, hurry up and open the door!"
Shen Chengzhou jumped up in fright and rushed to open the door, revealing a drunken man stumbling inside.
Li Xiaomei hurriedly helped the man to the main seat at the dining table and quickly set out the utensils she had just put away.
"I thought you said you’d be back later. Why are you already drinking in the middle of the day?"
"I can drink whenever I want! It's my money, and I can lose it however I please! You have no right to interfere!"
The man had a mouthful of yellow teeth, and the smell of alcohol emanating from him was utterly nauseating.
I instinctively covered my nose, and he noticed my gesture. Only then did he realize there was someone else at the table.
"I heard you're running a beauty salon. No wonder you're so pretty. You must be making quite a bit in your line of work," he said, his eyes roving over me, making me feel uncomfortable, his tone dripping with lewdness.
"It's not a beauty salon; it's just a Nail Salon, a legitimate small business that barely makes ends meet. I don't earn much," I replied.
"Look at you, so fair and beautiful. How could an uncle like me dislike you?" he chuckled lewdly.
Suddenly, Li Xiaomei slapped him across the face. "Shen Dagen! This is your son's girlfriend; stop making a fool of yourself!"
The slap instantly silenced Shen Dagen, his gaze immediately shifting to something more subdued.
Seeing the atmosphere turn tense, Shen Chengzhou quickly urged everyone to start eating.
But just as I reached for my chopsticks, Li Xiaomei shot me a vicious glare.
