In this art-filled restaurant, I was enjoying a solitary dinner, the neon lights outside having no bearing on me. However, a sharp gaze pierced through my tranquility.
I looked up and locked eyes with Su Liyan, her eyes ablaze with anger. Huang Lu stood beside her, a smug smile plastered on her face.
“Liyan, it seems our guess was correct,” Huang Lu said, a hint of cunning in her voice.
“Hmph, I want to see what tricks she has up her sleeve,” Su Liyan replied coldly.
Though they hadn’t made a reservation, they found seats with the manager’s guidance. Su Liyan scanned the restaurant and inadvertently fixed her gaze on me.
“Su Xiaoxiao!” Su Liyan's voice dripped with venom.
“Liyan, isn’t that Su Xiaoxiao?” Huang Lu exclaimed in surprise.
“How does she have the right to be here?” Su Liyan’s tone was filled with disdain.
“Who knows? Maybe she found a new patron,” Huang Lu said dismissively.
“Let’s go see,” Su Liyan decided.
The two approached me, while I remained blissfully unaware of the storm about to unfold.
“Su Xiaoxiao!” Su Liyan's voice interrupted my thoughts.
I looked up to see the two of them and felt a flicker of annoyance rise within me.
“Su Liyan? Huang Lu?” I asked, confusion lacing my voice.
“It’s an honor that you remember us,” Su Liyan said sarcastically.
“Are you looking for something?” I tried to maintain my composure.
“Can’t we look for you if there’s nothing else?” Su Liyan’s aggressive tone irked me further.
“We’re not familiar,” I replied coldly.
“You…” Su Liyan was incensed by my attitude.
“Su Xiaoxiao, how did you become so bold?” Huang Lu seemed surprised by my change.
“People change,” I frowned, unwilling to elaborate further.
“Have you been taken care of by someone?” Huang Lu's bluntness felt like an insult.
“That’s my personal matter and none of your business,” I said firmly.
"Private matters?" Huang Lu scoffed.
"Of course," I replied confidently.
"Su Xiaoxiao, have you really been kept?" Su Liyan's voice was laced with gloom.
"I have no obligation to explain myself to you," I answered indifferently.
"Hmph, do you think I wouldn't know just because you won't say it?" Su Liyan huffed coldly.
"Don't make accusations without evidence," I warned.
"Su Xiaoxiao, don't be so arrogant," Su Liyan shouted angrily.
"I'm not the one being arrogant here," I retorted sarcastically.
"You..." Su Liyan was at a loss for words.
"Liyan, stop wasting your breath on her," Huang Lu said impatiently.
"Su Xiaoxiao, let me tell you, I won't let this go," Su Liyan said fiercely.
"Do as you please," I replied nonchalantly.
"You..." Su Liyan was exasperated.
I continued eating, but Su Liyan and Huang Lu were far from finished.
"Su Xiaoxiao, you have some nerve!" Su Liyan scolded.
"What’s wrong with me?" I responded calmly.
"You actually dared not to come to work!" Su Liyan accused.
"I took a leave of absence," I said dismissively.
"You still have the face to take a leave?" Su Liyan fumed.
"Why shouldn't I have the face to take a leave?" I countered.
"You..." Su Liyan was speechless.
"Su Xiaoxiao, why haven't you been answering your phone?" Huang Lu questioned.
"Why should I answer the phone?" I shot back.
"You..." Huang Lu was also at a loss for words.
"Su Xiaoxiao, are you looking for trouble?" Su Liyan threatened.
"Go ahead and try," I replied coldly.
"Do you think I wouldn't dare?" Su Liyan provoked.
"Then go ahead and try," I said lightly.
"Do you really think I wouldn't dare?" Su Liyan shouted in anger.
"Then give it a shot," I said indifferently.
"You..." Su Liyan was so furious that she couldn't speak.
"Sister Liyan, don't get angry," Huang Lu comforted her.
"Su Xiaoxiao, let me ask you, did you steal the Heart of the Ocean sapphire at the auction?" Su Liyan questioned.
"What do you mean by 'steal'? The items at an auction go to the highest bidder," I replied calmly.
"You..." Su Liyan's face turned ashen with rage.
"What about me? Next time, remember to find a wealthy partner," I mocked.
"You..." Su Liyan trembled with anger.
