A complex string of code and data popped up on the computer screen. Although I couldn't understand it all, one thing was clear: a remote control program had been implanted in the device's monitoring system, capable of adjusting emission data at any time.
"So, Li Wanqing was telling the truth..." I murmured to myself.
"Li Wanqing? That researcher?" Manager Xu suddenly tensed up. "He visited our factory two days ago for an inspection and said he wanted to collect some data. But..."
"But what?"
"The next day, someone came to warn me." Manager Xu's voice trembled slightly. "They said if I dared to give the data to Professor Li, the factory could expect bankruptcy."
My heart sank. Li Wanqing's disappearance was likely related to this. Just as I was about to ask for more details, Manager Xu's phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the number and his face changed dramatically.
"Oh no, the Environmental Protection Agency is doing a surprise inspection at the factory!" He hurriedly stood up. "I'm sorry, I have to go back immediately..."
"Wait!" I grabbed his wrist. "Don't you think this timing is too coincidental?"
Manager Xu froze. Indeed, who conducts surprise inspections at eleven o'clock at night? Unless... someone is watching us!
"Let's go!" I pulled Manager Xu out of the teahouse. Across the street, two shadowy figures slipped into a black sedan.
"They're following us!" Manager Xu exclaimed in panic.
"Stay calm and follow me." I led him into an alley. In this old district, I knew every little path too well. After several twists and turns, we finally shook off the car behind us.
"Don't go back to the office tonight." I settled Xu, the General Manager, in a small hotel. "I'll take the USB drive with me; someone will contact you tomorrow."
By the time I returned home, it was already past midnight. Just as I was about to check the contents of the USB drive, my phone rang. It was an encrypted number.
"Reporter Yang, I advise you to stop your investigation immediately." The voice on the other end was processed, sounding mechanical and cold. "This is not something you can handle."
"What have you done to Li Wanqing?"
There was a silence for a few seconds. "This is your final warning. Otherwise, you'll face the consequences."
After hanging up, I immediately backed up the data from the USB drive and sent copies to Old Ma and a few trusted colleagues. In times like this, having more people aware of the truth would only increase safety.
Just as I was preparing to analyze the data further, the doorbell rang unexpectedly. Who could it be at this hour? Peering through the peephole, I saw an unexpected visitor—my Editor-in-Chief, drenched in sweat, standing outside.
"Pack your things quickly!" he said as soon as he entered. "I just received news that someone is going to shut down our newspaper on charges of illegal operations. This is aimed at your report!"
"That escalated quickly..." I chuckled bitterly. "It seems I've really stirred up a hornet's nest."
The Editor-in-Chief was pacing anxiously. "Stop wasting time; we need to leave! I've arranged for you to hide out at the Southern Branch."
"I can't do that." I shook my head and opened my computer. "You need to see this."
The Editor-in-Chief leaned closer, and as lines of code and data unfolded on the screen, his expression shifted from confusion to shock, ultimately transforming into deep anger.
"These bastards..." he gritted his teeth, "are simply lawless!"
"So I can't back down," I said firmly. "This is not just an environmental fraud; there are greater secrets behind it. If we retreat now, we will never uncover this layer of fog."
The Editor-in-Chief was silent for a long time, and finally, he gave my shoulder a heavy pat. "Alright! I'll put my reputation on the line and stick with you to the end!"
