Sitting in the center of the living room on the sofa, Zheng Yifan relaxed his eyes, feeling exhausted. His nerves were too taut, fearing he might be dragged into an alley and turned into minced meat.
In this world where the law had collapsed, nothing was impossible. At the very least, the mother and daughter before him must have endured a miserable life to end up disfigured.
"Um... what was your name again?" Zheng Yifan pondered for a moment. "Oh! Right, your name is Han Rui."
Across from him, Han Rui held onto her box, vigorously sucking on the chocolate in her mouth.
Beside her, the girl, Su Qin, cherished her yogurt, while two bars of Hershey's chocolate were stuffed in her pocket. Her big, sparkling eyes were fixed intently on Zheng Yifan's backpack casually tossed on the sofa.
"Han Rui, I believe you understand that I didn't buy you and your daughter for your looks. So here, you can rest assured; I won't do anything excessive. From now on, I'll take care of your food. As you can see, this entire house costs one hundred Zombie Crystal s per month, which has already been paid. I'll leave you with two hundred forty Zombie Crystal s for your daily needs," Zheng Yifan said slowly, narrowing his eyes. "From now on, you will both be free individuals—people who can control their own destinies."
However, no matter what Zheng Yifan said, the mother and daughter huddled together like frightened birds on the sofa, trembling incessantly. They knew their lives were now in this man's hands. Who knew what perverse things he might enjoy? If something happened to her, that would be one thing; but what about her daughter?
"I command you both to act as if this were before the apocalypse—no self-doubt, hesitation, or fear allowed," Zheng Yifan said sternly.
After a lengthy explanation filled with earnestness, they gradually relaxed their guard and lessened their fear of Zheng Yifan. The post-apocalyptic woman seemed to be slowly awakening.
"Thank you for your kindness, but what I truly want to know is why you want us when we have no value," Han Rui asked tremulously as she looked at Zheng Yifan. Years of subjugation had left her wavering between belief and disbelief, her heart tangled with countless thoughts.
She wanted to feel valuable; only then could she be worthy of this master—or rather, benefactor—before her.
"I need your computer skills. I need you to create software for me and provide technical support when necessary—and keep your mouth shut," Zheng Yifan replied with an open hand. "That's all."
"That's it? Nothing else?" Han Rui still found it hard to believe.
"Really! That's all I need. I require your pre-apocalypse expertise to help restore order. Of course, starting now, you'll need to begin coding for me. Sometimes I'll assign you fixed tasks," Zheng Yifan said as he adjusted his clothes slightly.
Han Rui fell silent in thought; meanwhile, Su Qin's stomach betrayed them with a loud growl. The little money they had earned from selling themselves had long been spent on food and drink—after all, human traffickers weren't charitable organizations; they had to fend for themselves.
"You can think it over! I happen to have a fish here; you can consider while cooking it. When renting this place, they provided a gas canister along with basic pots and pans."
These items were not lacking in the Gathering Place; only gas was relatively expensive. However, the amount provided was minimal—enough for three to five uses at most. Want more? Then they would need to purchase it with Zombie Crystal s.
The price was indeed not cheap, a full fifty Zombie Crystal s for a single can. How could an ordinary person deal with a Zombie? Let alone fifty Zombies?
This had led many people to start cooking with firewood.
Of course, the vast majority of people were living on Relief Food; they couldn't even afford that little bit of firewood. They could only go outside the Gathering Place to chop wood themselves.
The atmosphere in the room seemed a bit cold, with no one speaking, only Su Qin looking pitifully at Zheng Yifan.
“Let me see what else I have in my bag.” Zheng Yifan opened his backpack and first counted out some Zombie Crystal s, placing them on the coffee table, then continued rummaging through his bag.
Neatly arranged on the table were a bag of chips, a bag of salt, and the last two bars of chocolate.
There really wasn't much left; there was too little to leave for the mother and daughter. He could only hope that two hundred forty Zombie Crystal s would be enough for them to get by for a while.
“Sir, are you sure you want technical support or methods to make money using a Computer?” Han Rui came out from the kitchen after finishing cooking the fish, still somewhat incredulous.
A fragrant aroma filled the entire room; it was truly impressive that Han Rui managed to create such a dish without any oil or seasoning.
“Yes! I need software that can earn money in peaceful times. Your job is to write the software and, if possible, organize a team. I believe with your capabilities as a group president, this task won't be difficult for you,” Zheng Yifan said casually, still yawning. The long hours of work made him eager to return to modern times for a good sleep.
“If you want it, I believe I can meet your requirements. I just hope my daughter won’t have to live in hunger anymore,” Han Rui said as she placed the cooked fish on the table.
The fish on the plate was simply roasted without oil, relying solely on its own fat.
Seeing the salt on the table, Han Rui asked, “Can we use this?”
When Zheng Yifan nodded, she pinched a little salt and slowly sprinkled it over the fish.
“It’s still quite fragrant,” Zheng Yifan praised before continuing, “I agree to all the conditions you proposed. I also think that ancient emperors didn’t starve their soldiers. Not only your daughter but even your future life doesn’t need to be worried about. As long as you can meet my requirements, I will definitely be a very reasonable Boss.”
With Zheng Yifan's approval, Han Rui's mood visibly improved.
“However! What I need is something that can quickly show results and effectiveness to prove your capabilities. After all, I don’t know whether you have practical skills or not, so you will need to present a piece of software or product to demonstrate your value.”
"This request isn't unreasonable, is it?" Zheng Yifan shrugged.
"You're right, I completely agree. I happen to have a software that I designed previously, and I believe its value can fully reflect my capabilities or those of my former team." Han Rui pulled out a laptop from the bottom of her pile of belongings.
Then she found a wooden box in the corner of the suitcase and opened it to reveal a laptop battery.
Seeing this, Zheng Yifan felt relieved. The laptop he saw was just like those in the real world; at least he found an Ethernet port and USB ports on it.
"I just happen to have a software in my computer that is the core of our company's five-year plan—an auxiliary software for stock trading," Han Rui continued explaining to Zheng Yifan.
Noticing that Han Rui had entered work mode and seemed to have forgotten about the fish she was preparing, she glanced at Su Qin, who was drooling beside her. "Su Qin, you can eat the fish first. I'm going to discuss something with your mom, and we'll eat later."
"Qin Qin, you eat first. Mom isn't hungry." Despite her growling stomach, Han Rui still forced herself to introduce her product to Zheng Yifan.
She knew this was her chance to prove her worth; as long as she gained recognition, there was a good chance that her future living situation would be resolved by the man in front of her.
After all, she had seen the bulging bag containing Zombie Crystal s in Zheng Yifan's backpack and his generous demeanor.
In her eyes, Zheng Yifan must be wealthy and influential in the outer city district; at the very least, he shouldn't be facing hunger.
