"Dad, I'm back!" I carried Qu Liang into the pharmacy at home and placed him on the bed next to Hu Yalong.
My dad, Jiang Dongming, is a well-known doctor in the area. Despite the small size of our pharmacy, many people come here for treatment.
As soon as I set Qu Liang down, Hu Yalong was startled awake.
Seeing Qu Liang on the bed, pale with a trace of blood at the corner of his mouth, Hu Yalong rushed over and grabbed my arm, his voice trembling with emotion. " Brother Jiang Ling, you really are my real brother! I didn't expect you to take revenge for me so quickly!"
I glanced at Hu Yalong and realized he had misunderstood. I rubbed my nose, deciding not to tell him the truth. Instead, I patted his shoulder and smiled. "Fatty, who is your Brother Jiang Ling? When have I ever let you down?"
"You troublemaker, did you get into trouble again?" My dad heard our conversation and rushed out from the back room with a wooden stick in hand.
He is always polite to others but treats me differently. The moment I cause trouble, he immediately comes after me with that stick.
"Dad, there's still stuff going on at school! Fatty and I are heading back now! The person lying on the bed is my classmate; can you take a look at him?" After years of dodging that stick, I sensed danger and quickly pulled Hu Yalong toward the door. By the time we come back next time, Dad's anger should have cooled down.
My dad chased us for a bit before returning to the pharmacy. When he saw a beautiful girl lying on the bed, he stroked his chin thoughtfully. "This is my son's first time bringing a girl home; could she be his girlfriend?"
"Well, let's treat this girl first and then ask her properly later!" My dad took out his medical kit and began treating Qu Liang.
By the time Hu Yalong and I returned to our dormitory, it was already eight in the evening, but we didn’t see Li Hongze or Lan Yue around.
Hu Yalong lay on his bed and looked at me. " Brother Jiang Ling, I've been meaning to ask about last night. Now that it's just us two here, tell me honestly—did I really encounter a ghost? Did you save me?"
I shook my head. "Fatty, did Qu Liang give you a concussion? There are no ghosts in this world!"
Hu Yalong sighed and slapped his forehead. "Looks like I really was hallucinating last night!"
I had been busy all day and was drenched in sweat; there was a strong odor coming from me. Unable to stand it any longer, I took out my toiletries, stripped down to just my underwear, and headed into the bathroom. I called out to Fatty on the bed, "I'm going to take a shower! Keep an eye out for me; don’t let the homeroom teacher walk in!"
"Got it, Brother Jiang Ling!"
Our homeroom teacher is a woman in her forties. Whenever we showered, we would leave someone on lookout to prevent her from unexpectedly checking the dormitory.
Not long after I entered the bathroom, my phone rang. However, since I was inside, I didn’t hear it.
Hu Yalong knew I was in the shower and couldn't answer the phone. He got out of bed, picked up my phone, and saw that it was Li Hongze calling.
Hu Yalong answered the call, "Hello, Hongze, what's going on? Why aren't you back yet?"
The signal on the other end seemed poor, with a lot of noise coming through. He could only faintly hear Li Hongze's voice.
Li Hongze's voice came through in a stutter, "Fatty, Lan Yue and I are at the main gate outside the school. We seem to be lost! Can you come out and get us?"
Then, suddenly, the call dropped.
Hu Yalong was a bit confused; logically, how could they get lost right at the school gate?
He dialed Li Hongze's number three times in a row but couldn't get through. The recorded message said that Li Hongze's phone was out of service.
Furrowing his brow, Hu Yalong said, "I should go check at the school gate!"
" Brother Jiang Ling, I'm going to the school gate to pick up Li Hongze and the others. You should come out once you're done showering!" Hu Yalong knocked on the bathroom door and called out loudly.
"Okay, I got it! I'll find you guys soon!"
" Brother Jiang Ling, I took your jade pendant!" Hu Yalong noticed my jade pendant on the bed. For some reason, he put it around his neck and then grabbed a flashlight before heading out.
Meanwhile, Li Hongze and Lan Yue stood at the school's main gate, surrounded by a dozen other students from their school.
Li Hongze checked his phone again and found there was still no signal. He sighed and said to Lan Yue beside him, "Lan Yue, Fatty just answered the call. He should be coming to get us."
Lan Yue nodded but didn't say anything; his face was tense with anxiety.
Earlier, Li Hongze and Lan Yue had already reached the front of the school gate. However, no matter how they tried to move forward, they couldn't step inside the school grounds.
Slowly, more people became trapped there, and the atmosphere grew increasingly oppressive. Some timid girls were even scared to tears.
Lan Yue glanced at the dark campus ahead. It should have been dark for a while now; the streetlights inside the school should have been on. Yet there wasn't a single light visible in front of them—not even in the security booth at the gate.
Everything felt too strange, but no one dared to speak up about it.
Lan Yue tugged at Li Hongze's hand and said, "Hongze, do you think we've run into a ghost?"
Li Hongze felt just as terrified inside, but he forced himself to remain calm and replied, "Lan Yue, don't scare yourself! There are no ghosts in this world!"
Just as he finished speaking, a chilling wind swept past them, carrying with it a spine-chilling laughter. Then they heard a sinister voice say, "Hehe, are you sure there are really no ghosts?"
The sudden voice sent shivers down their spines, and they looked around frantically, trying to locate where the sound was coming from.
"Ah! Help! I don't want to die yet! Boohoo~~" At that moment, a girl began to cry out in fear, her mental state clearly breaking down. She ran towards the school gate while sobbing.
The girl had only taken a few steps when she seemed to collide with something. Her body swayed, and she fell directly to the ground.
"Hehe! You can't escape! I will eat you all!" The eerie voice reappeared, this time coming from the very spot where the girl had fallen.
However, when Li Hongze and the others looked over, there was no one there.
"Ghost!" The other girls screamed in panic at the sight before them. Although Li Hongze and his friends were somewhat braver, their faces turned pale with fear. They huddled together, too scared to run off in different directions.
"Hehe! I will kill you all!" The sinister voice echoed again, now coming from directly above Li Hongze and his friends.
