Ye Xiu stood before the grand and solemn gates of a traditional campus, precisely, it was the entrance to a university.
The front bore the name of the university, while the back was inscribed with a short phrase in English that resembled a motto.
This was Ming Zhong University, the only prestigious university in Starlit City, aside from a few vocational schools.
However, Ye Xiu was not here to attend classes. He had come for a job interview.
After explaining his situation to the security guard, Ye Xiu stepped inside.
The classical and magnificent gates effectively shut out the noise of the outside world. The moment he crossed the threshold, the bustling chaos of life was replaced by an invigorating scholarly atmosphere.
This was the university he had once envied. Indeed, seeing it in person was far more impactful than hearing about it; now, as a prospective employee, Ye Xiu felt a different kind of sentiment stirring within him.
As he wandered through the campus, he decided to take a look around before addressing the interview; he would postpone that for a moment.
The campus was lush with trees, red bricks and green tiles harmoniously complemented each other, creating a beautiful and refreshing environment filled with dappled sunlight.
Everything seemed to transport him back to ancient times, though there were also some modern buildings scattered about.
Time had passed quickly; if he didn't head to the interview soon, he would miss his chance, which would not be good.
Thus, Ye Xiu hurriedly made his way toward the staff office building.
He weaved through groups of students, feeling as if he were one of them since everyone wore similar attire.
Upon reaching the staff office, he successfully secured the position. The monthly salary was two thousand.
"Not bad, let's get started."
The procedures weren't too complicated and were completed quickly.
Next, Ye Xiu arrived at the Security Room. He saw various riot control equipment hanging on the walls, and a Bearded Man was busy cleaning.
"You... need something?" The Bearded Man, appearing to be in his thirties, turned to Ye Xiu and asked.
"I'm here for work. Look..." Ye Xiu took out his identification and pointed to the words on it.
"Just you?" The Bearded Man paused for a moment before continuing, "You can't be a new student here, right? Coming in for a part-time job?"
"What new student has time for a part-time job? I'm nineteen. After graduating high school, I chose to keep my student status and experience life before going to college," Ye Xiu had anticipated all possible questions before applying, and now he simply recited the lines that had already formed in his mind.
"..." The Bearded Man was clearly taken aback. Not going to college after high school? Experiencing life? This guy must be crazy!
Then Ye Xiu took out a pack of premium Chinese cigarettes, pulled one out, and handed it over, casually slipping another pack into the Bearded Man's pocket.
The Bearded Man accepted it with a smile: "Not bad, you have potential. Although I'm not the captain of this security team yet, I'm close to becoming one. If anything comes up in the future, I've got your back."
"Hehe. Thanks, big brother..." Ye Xiu scratched his head and chuckled softly.
After that, the Bearded Man began to familiarize Ye Xiu with the security duties.
This job involved not only taking turns guarding the entrance but also patrolling the campus in shifts to prevent any unexpected incidents.
Since Ye Xiu had just arrived at his post, he didn't need to guard the entrance today; he would just join the team for a patrol around the campus in the evening. His accommodation was in the staff area of the campus, so to make things easier, he decided to stay there and enjoy himself at a hotel on weekends.
Time passed quickly, and before long, it was night.
Ye Xiu held a flashlight and followed the group as they patrolled the campus.
It was April, and the weather was cool and comfortable, neither too hot nor too cold.
However, the campus at night was sparsely populated, with only couples occasionally appearing.
At this moment, the Bearded Man stayed close to Ye Xiu to look after the newcomer.
"Do you know why there are so few people around at this time?" the Bearded Man leaned in closer to Ye Xiu, one hand cupped over his mouth.
"Why..." Ye Xiu paused, clearly taken aback.
"Because—this—school—is haunted!" The Bearded Man spoke in a dramatic manner, pausing for effect. He eagerly awaited the newcomer’s reaction.
Sure enough, Ye Xiu stood there like a statue, stunned.
The Bearded Man burst into laughter; it seemed he had successfully frightened the newcomer.
Clearly, the Bearded Man did not believe in ghosts. He had heard rumors about hauntings at this school and merely wanted to share them with Ye Xiu for a bit of fun.
Puffing out his chest, the Bearded Man patted himself on the back. "Don't worry, I've got your back. If any ghosts show up, just stay calm!"
Ye Xiu nodded thoughtfully.
His momentary shock at hearing about ghosts wasn't due to fear; rather, it stemmed from the numerous supernatural occurrences he had experienced recently. He felt that these events were far from coincidental. Could they be related to his missing brother?
After the night patrol ended, as a newcomer, Ye Xiu did not need to be on duty, so he bid farewell to Bearded Man and returned to the dormitory.
The dormitory environment was not very good; it was just like an ordinary student room, with bunk beds and four staff members in one room.
However, due to the shift change, whenever it was not his turn to be on duty, he would have the dormitory all to himself, as his schedule was staggered with the other three.
But tonight, all four of them were present in the dormitory.
Ye Xiu briefly introduced himself and learned the names of the other three.
He lived on the upper bunk, while the lower bunk was occupied by a relatively thin young man around twenty-five years old named Hu Mao. He came from a rural area and had started working after graduating from middle school.
Hu Mao was a nice person and treated Ye Xiu, who was younger than him, particularly well.
Hu Mao took out a cherished cigarette and offered it to Ye Xiu, who accepted it but did not light it.
"Brothers, enjoy our good cigarettes," Ye Xiu said as he took out half a box of exquisite Zhonghua cigarettes to share with everyone.
"Good cigarettes!"
"I have another box here; I'll leave it out. Whoever wants to smoke can take it."
"You're a true brother."
On the opposite upper bunk was a man in his thirties named Zhang Bao, who had a scruffy beard.
The lower bunk next to Zhang Bao was occupied by a young man named Haoyun Song, who looked about the same age as Hu Mao.
Ye Xiu surveyed his new surroundings when suddenly, Hu Mao approached him and started talking.
"You made the right choice joining our security team. In school, teachers aren't really the ones in charge; they just handle the classes. We, the security team, manage the safety of the school. Here, students have to do what we say, except for those privileged rich kids. In this school, we can pretty much rule our own territory," Hu Mao said cheerfully.
Ye Xiu couldn't help but twitch his face at the thought of ruling a territory.
Hu Mao continued to chat with Ye Xiu for a long time, discussing everything from the school beauty to buying vegetables at the market, rambling on and on.
Ye Xiu couldn't help but admire Hu Mao's enthusiasm.
But all he wanted was to take a nap; he was tired.
Seeing that Hu Mao showed no signs of stopping, Ye Xiu simply pulled out a cigarette and handed it to Hu Mao. While Hu Mao lit it, Ye Xiu covered himself with the blanket and fell asleep.
During the night, Ye Xiu felt someone caressing him; it was very cold, yet he couldn't wake up.
