As Chu Donglin stepped out of the supermarket, he did not encounter any Mutated Zombies. However, he spotted a group of human Survivors sneaking around the corner.
Observing the trio, each carrying a large bundle, Chu Donglin realized their destination was the supermarket behind him.
What terrified him was that the moment he saw these humans, his body, which had just been sated from a meal, suddenly sent out a strong signal of aggression.
A feeling of heat and Fury spread through his limbs, and he nearly charged at the group with his Machete in hand.
Despite having just eaten, why was he still craving the blood and flesh of those humans? Did Zombies really have to eat people?
This realization filled Chu Donglin with dread.
Having fled in this chaotic apocalypse for over a week, he had witnessed several tragedies. Coupled with seeing the ugly faces of humanity in the face of disaster, his heart had long hardened.
If it were merely a desire to eat people, he would find it somewhat repulsive but not overly frightening.
But then he thought of his parents—his motivation for becoming stronger was to return to Wangcheng and live with them.
Yet now, just from seeing a few living humans from afar, his Zombie instincts began to Madness within him, almost pushing him over the edge.
Once he returned to Wangcheng and lived alongside his parents among thousands of Survivors, constantly smelling the enticing aroma of human blood and flesh, could he still maintain his sanity?
This hypothetical scenario filled him with fear. He abruptly turned and ran, not daring to look back at the Survivors. He was terrified that if he let his guard down for even a moment, he might truly lose control and become a mindless cannibal.
He ran wildly, even knocking over several staggering Zombies along the way. It wasn't until he reached several streets away that Chu Donglin collapsed onto the ground, gasping for breath.
His body wasn't tired, but performing actions similar to those of humans gave him a sense of familiarity, creating an illusion that he was still human.
However, just as Chu Donglin sat down, a shadow swept across the street above him, lunging towards him.
It was a mutated Zombie Dog, its body riddled with rotten wounds, a testament to the battles it had endured.
At that moment, the mutated Zombie Dog let out a low growl and transformed into a streak of black lightning, pouncing from behind Chu Donglin.
Clearly, Chu Donglin's reckless sprinting through the city had attracted a terrifying foe.
As the Zombie Dog closed in, Chu Donglin sensed its presence and the alluring signal emitted by the crystal in the creature's brain.
With a cold snort, Chu Donglin chose not to flee. Instead, he brandished his Machete and charged forward.
Given the speed of the Zombie Dog, he knew he could never outrun it, nor did he intend to.
In a world where zombies kill and devour each other, only the brave would prevail when paths crossed. Running away would only lead to his demise.
After all, if he didn't evolve into something stronger, countless enemies would always covet his Virus Energy Crystal.
You might escape today but not tomorrow; only by becoming stronger than anyone else could he ensure that these zombies would no longer pose a threat. That was true safety.
The Zombie Dog was fast, almost like a bolt of black lightning.
Originally, dogs had explosive power, and after being altered by the virus, they became even more terrifying. Chu Donglin fixed his gaze on the charging Zombie Dog and managed to dodge its attack just in time as it lunged at him with a roar.
With a heavy swing, the Machete came down, aiming to injure the Zombie Dog.
However, Chu Donglin was just a moment too slow. As he and the dog crossed paths, even with all his strength behind the strike, the blade of the Machete only grazed the tail of the Zombie Dog, missing its target.
The Zombie Dog, undeterred by its failed attack, immediately pivoted upon landing and lunged at Chu Donglin once more. After exchanging a few quick blows, Chu Donglin quickly grasped the creature's weakness.
Though the Zombie Dog's speed was astonishingly fast, its methods of attack were singular and predictable.
It lacked agile limbs; aside from lunging and biting, it had no other means of attack and could not perform the complex movements that a human could.
Understanding this, Chu Donglin let out a light sigh of relief. He remained calm and focused all his energy on avoiding being struck by the Zombie Dog, engaging it in a dance of evasion.
In less than three minutes, the two zombies had exchanged hundreds of blows without either landing a hit on the other. Finally, at a critical moment, Chu Donglin spotted an opening.
He brought down the Machete with force, striking precisely against the body of the Zombie Dog with a dull thud.
“Awwooo…”
The Zombie Dog howled in pain as it was sent flying over ten meters by the sheer force. Its battered body rolled several times on the street before struggling briefly and then falling still.
This was what a virus-enhanced Zombie Dog could withstand; if an ordinary person had taken that blow from Chu Donglin, it would have been far worse than just shattered bones.
After securing his victory, Chu Donglin charged forward without hesitation. Without pausing for breath, he delivered several more strikes to the paralyzed Zombie Dog.
Only when its sturdy skull had been reduced to fragments did Chu Donglin finally relax.
Searching through the pool of red and white brain matter with the blade, Chu Donglin unearthed a red Energy Crystal. Instantly, a scent wafted through the air, one that was irresistibly enticing to the Zombies.
Nearby, the Zombies that had been driven away by the battle between two Mutated Zombies caught a whiff of this alluring aroma and began to surge forward.
As those hollow-eyed Silence gazes fell upon the Energy Crystal in Chu Donglin's hand, a longing emotion broke through their vacant expressions.
Chu Donglin looked at the mindless Ordinary Zombies rushing toward him and snorted coldly. Wiping the blood off the Energy Crystal, he tilted his head back and swallowed it whole.
Once the fragrant scent dissipated from the air, the Zombies that had been drawn in paused momentarily. After standing still for two seconds, they lost their target and returned to their aimless wandering, scattering in all directions.
At the moment he swallowed the Energy Crystal, Chu Donglin's body trembled as a familiar wave of heat surged throughout him once more.
In that frenzied warmth, he felt as if he had been ignited, instinctively letting out a low growl of pleasure.
This process lasted about ten seconds, after which the heat flowed toward Chu Donglin's brain before vanishing somewhere within his mind.
He flexed his right hand and realized that his strength seemed to have increased slightly.
Unlike last time, this time Chu Donglin was more acutely aware of the energy absorption. He finally sensed the location of the Energy Crystal within his mind.
Though it was still hazy, he felt an odd sensation as if his consciousness could reach out and touch that crystal.
Instinctively using his Mental Power to probe at the crystal, Chu Donglin's body jolted as he realized that at that moment, his awareness seemed to drift outside of his body.
This revelation startled Chu Donglin. After more than half an hour of mental verification, he discovered that his Mental Power could indeed radiate from that crystal into the surroundings, allowing him to manipulate the nearby Zombies.
The sudden discovery filled Chu Donglin with overwhelming joy.
Although the control was vague, and it could only be that the High-Level Zombie was forcibly enslaving the Ordinary Zombies with its powerful Mental Power, Chu Donglin could only issue simple commands. He could not control these Zombies with the precision he desired.
However, this ability was enough to make Chu Donglin ecstatic. Even though he understood that all Mutated Zombies likely possessed similar capabilities, it did nothing to diminish his delight.
Chu Donglin believed that with his Normal Human intelligence, he could command this group of Zombies to execute some basic tactical maneuvers in coordination with him.
For instance, encirclement, ambushes, and surprise attacks—these were tactics not typically employed by ordinary Mutated Zombies. With the assistance of this group of Zombies, combined with intelligence far superior to that of Ordinary Zombies, Chu Donglin finally felt confident enough to face any Mutated Zombie.
He was even certain that if the Zombie Dog that had previously thrown him into chaos attacked him again, he could easily rely on the cooperation of these Low-Level Zombies to deal with that creature, which acted solely on instinct.
For the first time, standing in this city full of Zombies, Chu Donglin felt a newfound strength in his posture.
Hmph... whoever dares to come out and cause trouble for him would better prepare to be eliminated.
