If there were still large numbers of Ironclad Pillbugs ahead, death might be the best option.

The warm environment allowed us to catch our breath after experiencing both extreme heat and cold, but we did not have much time to relax before a grating "crunching" sound echoed ahead. We had no light source and did not need one; this sound had been following us all along, and without needing to see, I knew that Ironclad Pillbugs were waiting for us up ahead.
These creatures clearly did not hunt by sight, nor were they purposefully preparing an ambush; it seemed more like they had retreated but received news of our re-entry into the passage and were now counterattacking.
My previously relaxed heart tightened again as I carried Cao Mingzhe on my back and shouted, "Run back!"
That shout was unnecessary; Liu Squad Leader and Hu Aiguo had already turned around and started running back.
